Maybe have Cinematographer Panther in next year's ceremony?!

Whys that? ("Meteor man", "blade" were also black superheroes...)

Best film should not have anything to do by the margin of profits. Black panther was barely watchable, if you think black panther is one of the best 5 films of 2018, you either only have watched 5 movies or you have quostionable film taste.

Yes exactly, not sure how one can take the oscars seriously anymore after that "Black Panther" nomination..

Now, the Academy has been accused of a lot of things. Prejudices against black people. Prejudices against women.
Their latest decision shows they're also seemingly prejudiced against cinematographers, film editors, short-film directors and make-up artists - all awards they have dumped to get the live TV ceremony under 3 hours. Or rather, to shove a few extra ad-breaks into the TV coverage.

Really interesting Long video, about Fstoppers moving to an Island. I get itchy feet often, moving myself 1,000 miles away from where I live now or more. Not that drastic of a move but.. Anyone else had the desire to just sort of pick up and go somewhere Really different? Not just because of something bad happening where you are located, but just to get a new shot of energy from a new community, a lift in spirits,. A new look at even the same profession, or maybe a chance to change completely.
I really never gave Puerto Rico much of a thought. But it does sound interesting, and less of a challenge than I would have guessed. This video might help someone who thought about moving there. It answers a lot of questions about it.

My suspicion is that it *is* neat video and also that the stabilizer *is* mercalli and the deflicker *is* flickerfree. All I can say is that I was quite worried about losing my plugins when swapping to Resolve and found out that it had all the same functionality built in. Very very similar functionality

The GH5 and GH5s typically give less heat and more reliable operation than the Sonys.  There's also longer battery life, less rolling shutter, and more high speed frame rates combined with better data rates and codecs.

    Fair points.
I think that detail and sharpness are actually matters of taste and I like the image I'm getting out of my GH5 precisely because it doesn't have that digital sharpness that looks overdone to my eye. The look I'm getting looks more like film (to my un-refined eyes) and had a real timeless quality to it that I like.
Of course I'm shooting with the settings all tweaked for this result.
Perhaps the most important thing is knowing what you value and knowing what kind of image you like. All these cameras have tonnes of examples around so it's not hard to understand what they're all capable of.

Yeah easy to spend someone else's money, but the GH5 sounds like a no brainier. The same body layout alone is a huge plus, not counting the same menu layout also. The GH5 is just about impossible to beat for video, and even the photos are not bad,  and for the price used, they are a steal.

The G85 is still an excellent camera in 2018/2019. For a lot of smaller projects I'll grab it instead of the GH5.
IBIS works with vintage lenses, you just have to manually set the focal range.

Surprisingly, even two years later, I think the Panasonic G85 is still the best sub $1K camera to buy secondhand. You need to push up beyond the $1K price barrier before you find better cameras: X-T3 / GH5 / BMPCC4K (each around US$1.5K ish)
I'll likely pick up for my vlogging a G85 myself on eBay in 2019 when I find a tempting enough price.

It is preferable to use a preadjusted profile like Cine D when using 8bit. Too much post on 8bit vlog can produce colour artifacts. If using 10bit then whatever you want.

After a couple years on other software I decided to give PS and LR a go the other day and signed up for a subscription. I moved from the UK to the Netherlands and it took Adobe support about two hours to change my account. It was very much like the thread above. A trip to hell.
Made me immediately regret getting back on Adobe.

Go Resolve  And Luminar seems a good deal on the PS side. And note the Adobe playbook includes multiple levels and discounts as the customer offers resistance.

I feel your pain. Between Premiere unstability and Flash vulnerabilities, I have a strong distrust of Adobe myself. I use Resolve for editing these days. My biggest project is ~5,000 files / 500 GB and Resolve is handling it just fine. Each of the files actually is imported both in full res and a proxy, so there's closer to 10,000 imported files. Not sure how that scales against your needs...

I actually do mean a shotgun  I regularly see reporters using shotguns in a shock mount for quick interviews. Granted they're not also using the camera, so can physically stand between the lens and the subject, but still be out of frame (over the shoulder shot). They hold the mic kind of chest height and get great sound, with the mic being out of shot.
My idea was to try to replicate that with a 1 man crew. The suggestion was based on not wanting a mic on screen, not wanting a lav and being a one man crew - this really is the only other option and will be much better than a camera mounted mic.
Here's the only image I can find, and they're not using a shock mount, but to give you an idea - the camera is probably between the two mics we can see. The black one though, is more than likely in shot, so there's no need to use the shotgun, but you get the idea.

Personally, we always use a reporters mic, because there's no problem in having the mic in the shot in an noisey envornment. However I've heard many snarkey reporters complain to me and my reporter that the only reason to use one of those is to watermark the footage with your logo on the flag. I disagree.

Microphones are not like a telephoto lens such as a 200mm would be.
Thus I suspect you're looking in the wrong places here in imagining what you think you want.
Is this a seated staged interview? What kind of interviews are these? Indoors? Outdoors?

Quite possibly the best way to get acceptable audio here while a solo shooter is (however the best step is to first not be a solo shooter! & have a soundie) to have a C stand with Boom Buddy for the boom pole to position the mic just half an inch above the frame line. (an example of a very low budget recorder and mic to consider if doing these outdoors would be the Zoom F8n + Deity S-Mic 2 Shotgun with a blimp)

As the three most important rules of thumb for audio is:
    Location! Location! Location!
(the location of your mic that is)

Next most important tip to consider: your location again! (but in the sense of what is your shooting environment? As if you can improve it any form then that will lead to better audio too)
