Yes, 10 bit is VERY useful even without less noise for use in well lit environments.
(I'm using it regularly on the GH4 with external recorders and I'm not the only one. )

However PLEASE, never ever meassure dynamic range in bits.
You can use dB or EV but never bit. A bit is a unit of information. (Much like a "nat", but with a logarithm to the base of 2 and not e.)
Dynamic range is a physical range.
It has nothing to do with how many bits the ADC on the sensor provides between black and white and it has nothing to do with the bit-depth the codec or output reserves for storing that quantified reading.

How could you have possibly noticed that?
Nobody ever published the ID of the sensor model of the GH5.
Given the size of the order it's even possible to get modifications included or a different stepping for the same model.

Micro 4/3 is not a sensor size.
    It's a lens mount.
4/3" is an image circle size.
    4/3"  4:3 is a sensor size.

I'll preorder the GH5 if and only if it has been no 30min limit and V-Log is included.

Am I the only one who preferred the GH1 and GH2 to when the GH3 gave us that 'serious' body?
Slimmer, smaller, more fun, more nimble controls, no daft rear wheel that you can't do full turns off because the rubber of the rear grip doesn't drop away next to it
I also prefer the original A7S to the A7R II / A7S II. Again, slimmer, more nimble controls, less complexity, less soulless and more shiny!

Right, I didn't think about other cameras outputing 8bit.
(Only using Blackmagic Pocket and GH4R myself.)

10 bit -> 4x as many color shades to work with
no MPEG macro blocks -> fine noise to leave as film grain or to easily remove without visible artifacts
no GOP -> playing backwards and fast forwarding don't require more then a single frame to be rendered, also much faster rendering times for any kind of image modification (color correction, effects, compositing, ...)
    ->smooth highlight rolloffs/skies/fog

Atomos uses Sony NP-F batteries or D-Tap or DC-In.
My Shogun has an Aluminium Cage. They are VERY cheap to have. It also has locks for the HDMI ports and an extremely stiurdy protection for the XLR in+out and power port.
The Flame/Inferno are supposed to have a better case to not need such a thing.
The Chris: You left out LUTs for display+output (VERY Handy for a GH4 with V-Log) and that the display is and can be calibrated.
I'm planning to use mine as a mobile grading monitor when traveling with a calibratable 17" 10-bit LCD is inpractical.
If you are into cheap media for long sessions... try beating a 960GB Sandisk for about 200eur in SD-cards for 4K or gigantic mechanical HDDs for FullHD.
If you want to work fast...why copy that SD-card? The Atomos is SATA, just edit from it right away.

I'm looking forward to upgrade to a Shogun Flame or Inferno at some point.

VA 4k is 350 nits, Ninja Flame is 1500. I realize the Flame is $400 more, but peaking, zebras, false color, built in HDR for easy monitoring of Log recording, Prores/DNxHR codecs, custom LUT's, anamorphic desqueeze, and a much, much brighter screen makes it a compelling option. The quality of the VA's panel is the main reason I'm hesitant to buy one.
I have a job coming up where an external monitor is needed, so I'm just going to get a recorder to get 4k out of my a7s and use the a7rII as a cutaway cam. The VA is tempting because of price/media, but that screen.

the pix e5   may be a good recorder but the media they use is not much better then SD cards.
you get 2.5" SSDs anywhere and can use HDDs for fullhd but where do you get enough m.2 for a long night of shooting?

I was really hoping for a 4k ninja star annoucement...
I own an a7S and I mostly do Run and Gun shooting, you may think I'm crazy, but i'm on the edge of buying an 4k external monitor/recorder to put it in a backpack/or attached on belt, screen turned off. And occasionaly use it as a monitor too.
My concern with this method is overheating, especially in a bag! It kills the purpose of being low profile with a backpack on fire!
Is it possible, or is it completely stupid ?
If possible, which recorder would be the best (atomos assassin or pix-e5h or this BM 4K) ?

    Thanks!

Don't confuse mega Pixels with mega Dots (R, G and B sub pixels). This screen has 5 Mdots or 1,66 Mpixels and the Leica has 4,4 Mdots or 1,46 Mpixels effective resolution!

10bit 4:2:2 internally would be great.
As would CinemaDNG storage (to start an ACES workflow to match cameras)

We're doing FullHD 12bit raw with the old UHS1 95MB/s Sandisk Extreme pro.
So 4K 10bit ProRes/DNxHD should not be a problem on the current UHS2 284MB/s cards.

I'm planning on the P70 but instead of an unstable Hackingtosh, run MacOs inside a VMWare.
However I don't know yet if I can forward Thunderbolt devices to the virtual machine yet.
Resolve, Openoffice, Firefox, Thunderbird,... run natively on Windows and FCPX/Motion5/Compressor inside the VMWare then.
    Could this work?

Intel still has major problems with the Skylake drivers on all platforms. My guess it that that's what Apple is waiting for to present Thunderbolt 3.
And only when Apple has released them will there be Adapters to us existing Thunderbolt 2 devices on the Thunderbilt 3 ports.

QUOTE: I feel that Panasonic need a full frame sensor flagship model because there is a cultural issue with customers who think bigger is always better. No matter how good the GH3, the Lumix brand will always be seen as being lesser than Canon and Nikon without that fabled full frame camera. Even if the margins are very slim and the resources required to develop a whole new lens range significant, a full frame mirrorless camera from Panasonic would have a halo affect on the whole range from top to bottom.

I couldn't disagree more. Panny lost nearly $5b this past financial year, $25b accumulated loss over the past 5 years. The enormous investment to develop a FF camera and lenses from scratch would be financial folly. A far, far better uses of scares resources is to put it into making even better GHx cameras and lenses. Panny is in niche of two and can help take it mainstream. To cut back on investment here in order to compete with Canon, Nikon, Sony etc on their FF turf from scratch for the sake of a debatable halo affect would result in us all losing.
