So, I recently picked up a Pixel 5a on sale and gave the Motion Cam app a go on it. I've been having some fun and finding some fairly consistent results with the full sensor (4032X3024) @ 12FPS. I think the sensor size comes close to super 8mm sizing and the results definitely have an 8mm vibe.

    Wow, the image looks great.

I'm really pleased to noticed that Mirsad Makalic (the author of Motion Cam) is working hard on improving the app. A lot of issues I mentioned are addressed - you can set up you storage location any time, the story about 900-frame chunks is history - this part is completely reworked, focus slider is much more usable, RAW video buffer can be bigger and there is indicator for filling it during capture... I mean - join in, your input may be valuable, and you have chance to shape the app for your needs.

I wanna try it. Am just a little hesitant, like with trying out the various hacks on the GH2. I'm sure thus is going to be great. I have a spare smartphone. Maybe I use it.on that one.

  2. Interesting screenshots. The RAW has no burnt-out highlights and the rolloff is also very ... organic. From a distance it may seem to have less detail, but, that is only unnecessary sharpening in the regular screenshot. The RAW video should look even better with some more grading and sharpening, I am guessing.

I noticed that, in the 2nd pic, the store signboard has absolutely no detail in the regular pic, whereas in the RAW, its visible.

  3. Hahaha. I love it.

I didn't even use the subtitle track, and I still got it, all thanks to the good visuals and references.

IMHO, if you just work on the pacing (building it up slowly, to a crescendo), the grade (little more faded or washed out) and the soundtrack (more build up, with a heartbeat or its equivalent, as reference), this could easily be of a masterpiece.

    Great homage.

This is Pretty Neat. Unfortunately, since the Sony IMX377 and other 1/2.3" sensors, most smartphone sensors have abandoned 12-bit, for photo or video (Staggered HDR sensors do 12-bit HDR for photos instead). So, this is limited to 10-bit video for now. But, the video quality looks pretty stellar. Unprocessed and I am guessing the highlight and shadow recovery maybe pretty decent. It apparently does 10-bit 4-2-2 (most smartphones that do 10-bit video, have 4-2-0).

(The new Snapdragon and MediaTek SoCs talk about 18-bit imaging, which I am guessing may be some crazy HDR, upressing bit-depth, though that may solely be limited to photos).

This RAW video does look pretty neat, and doesn't look over sharpened or over processed like most smartphone footage.

  5. Curiously the fixed pattern noise, that appears static across frames is something I noticed in one of stars wars films (one of the 2 last ones). I thought it was a bad case of adding film grain, after shooting on a digital camera. Also, strangely, it was during one of the daytime shots, and not low light ones, like Sony explains in their reasoning doe not including PDAF.

  6. The price seems unnecessary, and the 2nd camera is a poor gimmick. Its quality is pretty bad. Unless its sole purpose was illegal aerial surveillance, as alleged by certain people in the US government (is already being done, by way of illegal data  sharing). For that, perhaps, its good enough.

Also, the sensor does Full Res at only 50fps, which seems like a slower readout than even the GH5, or is it due to processing limitations?

It's better than the 1inch sensor, mostly in low light. But, that may be more, due to the fact that both cameras have an f2.8 lens  and the one with the smaller pixel will obviously be worse in low light.

Some reviews have revealed a serious flaw - overheating.

    In 25C ambient environment, even 1080 30P overheat after 30min, 4K 60P overheats just after 5min.

I saw a few reviews citing overheating issues in most 4k settings. Plus the body gets noticeably hot, to the point if being uncomfortable. Would be interesting to see some people burn themselves, wearing this to their chest. The paid or clickbait ones obviously didn't notice, or didn't care to be honest. Btw, EU regulations have prevented having dual heat levels for switching off, so its going to shoot for much lesser in Europe, by default.

Not sure what DJI was thinking, creating something with such terrible heat management issues. And, winter is just around the corner. In the summer, this is definitely going to burn someone.

  8. Andrew, you do a great job with the site, and with anything that takes so much of one's time, effort and spirit, it is important to give yourself a little break, whenever you feel it's getting much.

I will suggest doing things that you havent done, not because you can't do them, but either you believed these things fo be very difficult, or you weren't sure how to pursue them. I was personally planning to run a traiathoin last year, despite never even having a run a marathon or half marathon in my life. I went out one day to test how much I can run, with absolutely zilch practice, and I ran about 7.5kms, with no prior preparation. I wasn't exhausted, but I didn't run more, cause I didn't wanna  become that guy who randomly dies, cause he decided to break some distance record, at his very first attempt. I am very comfortable at cycling even though I haven't done in over a decade, and my swimming is extremely slow and I had terrible buoyancy until, recently, when I discovered yoga. But, I see a lotta people with different physical handicaps, and extremely high level of mental power, and I realise, if I push myself, and be a little consistent, I should be able to pull it off.

2020 was all about about being broken down, by everything around.

2021, is about being crazy, and doing things you've never done before. Screw the formalities, just do things you want to, and care a fuck about anyone, including your self doubt, telling you, you can't.

    20MP M4/3 main sensor. 24mm equivalent, f/2.8-f/11.

    12MP 1/2" secondary sensor. 160mm equivalent, f/4.4.

Mavic 3 Pro and Mavic 3 Cine (built-in 1TB SSD).

With the specs on this, they could easily do a handheld cinema camera version of this, and it could do pretty well. Like an Osmo meets GoPro kind of ergonomics. M43 sensor, 2-2.5 inch display, more buttons, and threads in place for attachments. With the great codec and photo and video capabilities of DJI, it could replace a lot of large sensor cameras. I wonder if it's this is the new 120fps 4k sensor?

I’m more than a little suspicious that either:

    A. Sony agrees to make sensors for Panny under the condition they stick to their current AF tech on chip, or-

    B. Panny has unspoken knowledge that if they were to ask Sony to build them such a sensor, Sony would decline.

Sony makes great sensors, but Panasonic has a proven track record of being significantly better at utilizing those chips, and Sony I’m sure leverages their position to keep the playing field even. I suppose it is possible that there are patents on alternative AF tech which have been blocking Panny from switching, but it seems like Sony and Canon at minimum have AF well sorted, so it is surprising that Panny can’t seem to do the same.

All that being said, the various interviews in the last month strongly reinforce that Panny has zero intentions of switching up their AF tech, which is very disappointing.

Interesting. What about circumventing the PDAF layer on the sensor and using a ToF/laser autofocus instead? That could as fast and as accurate as a PDAF. Unfortunately no other sensor maker seems to be making prosumer camera sensors, as widely as Sony.

Curiously, Nikon was working on a 1inch sensor that had higher dynamic range than most full frame sensors and way faster read spreads too (I am mentioning this, since next generation sensors and newer tech should keep blurring the line between smaller and larger sensors). Not sure why it didn't develop further and, also curious whether the GH6 adds more dynamic range and low light improvements, and by how much.

Since switching from Fuji to Panny towards the end of last year, I have been building the system and despite shooting; 4 local craftspeople, 6 styled ‘wedding’ shoots, an event and a micro-wedding (stills only), it was not until a few days ago I had all the kit.

I have tested various combos and learned as much as I can about the set up with as much practice as I can, but nothing…nothing will reveal more than a real wedding filled with unrepeatable situations and moments.

I have my first 2 weddings; a 3 day hybrid coverage job and a 2 day stills only job, starting today.

It’s only during these next 3 days that I will find out with any certainty whether the AF is really up to the job I need it to do as I think it is.

I’m sure it is but there are still niggling doubts in my mind, partly due to the system, but also because I have only attended and shot 1 real full wedding in nearly 2 years.

I should have attended and shot around 50 by now since the end of my 2019 season, but nearly 2 enforced years out of the game due to Covid…

Oh ok. Thanks to China (Fauci, Bill Gates, etc too?), Covid has slowed down the world, and ensured most peoples lives are seriously disrupted. Also, the super shady behaviour of the UN (Tedros) and others is extremely strange.

I feel the Panasonic autofocus part can be explained in 3 parts.

'Of course, we have received various opinions from our customers, and we recognize that image-plane phase-detection AF is superior in terms of subject tracking. On the other hand, as represented by deep learning, we are improving AF performance by strengthening algorithms that utilize the video signal processing technology which we are good at.

We are currently developing the next-generation system with the aim of making it even more practical, so please wait until the day we can provide it.'

    1. "we have received various opinions from our customers, and we recognize that image-plane phase-detection AF is superior".

This means Panasonic know how urgently customers have been asking for AG to be improved (which for many, may be the sole thing lacking in Panasonic cameras).

    2. "... as represented by deep learning, we are improving AF performance by strengthening algorithms that utilize the video signal processing technology which we are good at."

Which is corporate gibberish at its finest.

    3. "We are currently developing the next-generation system with the aim of making it even more practical.."

Either they're reinventing the wheel or giving us some unbelievable story regarding DfD, which is quite unreliable, and needs to be phased out on new cameras.

If they don't fix the AF, it may be aufweidersehen for Panasonic. Which would be sad, because Panasonic seems to have gotten most other things right. And the failure of the G7, G9, G95 and others as Student Indie Cameras may mostly be due to bad marketing.

    Interview with Panasonic.

    https://www.cined.com/panasonic-lumix-discussed-an-interview-with-yosuke-yamane-san-about-the-gh5-ii-gh6-and-more/

Like the impression that I've got in the Andrew's inteview with him, looks like no PDAF in the GH6.

"Of course, we have received various opinions from our customers, and we recognize that image-plane phase-detection AF is superior in terms of subject tracking. On the other hand, as represented by deep learning, we are improving AF performance by strengthening algorithms that utilize the video signal processing technology which we are good at.

I read this too. It's deplorable, the insolence with which Panasonic dismissed the whole PDAF request of the majority of users. Unless then have extra sensors (like a ToF) to fix the autofocus, its probably just a very bad decision.

I thought it had to be shot on a Lumix camera?

I could be wrong and can't be arsed to read the rules as I won't be entering, - my skillz are not good enough to win anything, I'm a realistic bloke 😜

    🤣🤣🤣

    "1) Follow @lumix
    2) Pick one or more videos taken with LUMIX camera.
    3) Post 15-30 sec. video with an explanation on Instagram.
    4) Put the following hashtags: “#LUMIX20thLOVE” and the camera model of which the video was filmed (ex. #LUMIXGH5)"

Something tells me that for this contest they wouldn't be too keen on seeing great looking footage from a crusty old GH1...

Any great looking footage should do, I am guessing. Even if it were shot on a   smartphone and worked on extensively in post.

Prices are insane (GH6 + 10-20 1.7 + 25-50 1.7). But the fact that you have to submit a short piece without sound is quite strange.

I am guessing Panasonic is working on finalising a Lumix Theme Track, and may be collaborating with someone famous (Hans Zimmer 😉).

Panasonic should be generous and give away 3 x GH6 cameras, with different lens combinations (2× f1.7 primes, 2x f2.8-4 zooms, and 2x f2.7 zooms).

I have no doubt that the GH6 will be a powerful camera with most, or maybe even more, of the professional features in their S line

I hope you're right. The GH line started it for Panasonic and created the customer base for Videographers. It needs to be the camera to beat, atleast for video.

I am curious why no ILC maker is trying smartphone type HDR to get better low light, more dynamic range, and greater bit depth.

  17. 10 minutes ago, kye said:

What is it that the S-line has that the GH6 won't have?

My impression of what the market wants, apart from PDAF, isn't much beyond the C4K 10-bit 422 unlimited of the GH6.

In fact, the GH groups/forums that I'm in are so populated with people who just bought a GH5 (and more join every day) that it's hard to get past the newbie questions, and these people are so happy to get a camera with even the GH5 specifications.

Interestingly. The GH5 does pretty amazing at what it does. Only a slightly improve autofocus and better low light seem to be the only things that most people ask, I guess. Plus, throwing in a Netflix approval wouldn't be too bad (I am guessing Panasonic may be working on it). That may require a certain kind of timecode and a certain standard of Log profile (?).

  18. 24 minutes ago, newfoundmass said:

The GH5s has external RAW. Olympus enabled it on at least one camera, if I recall correctly.

I suspect the GH6 will have it.

Yes, my bad, I remember reading that (M43rumours?). Then why does he possibly mention issues with continuous recordingwith reference to the question on RAW and recording into an SSD (in the gri, like Andrew suggested). I felt some of his answers were in parallels. He probably didn't get the question clearly.
