    Nikon Zr is coming

Ditto. I see this new Zr as more comparable with the S9 than anything else within the Lumix lineup. It’s build by all reports is a notch up and the rear LCD on another level. It’s a ‘red cinema colour’ Nikon camera though rather than ‘RED in a Nikon body’. I like it and would have one if I was in the Nikon ecosystem, but nothing I’d switch to or build a system around. And as a 50:50 hybrid shooter, vs the S1Rii, it’s not even a conversation.
  3. Well, Nikon have come a long way in 10 years since the D750 at least. R3D, a proper screen, 32bit float, IBIS all very welcome as you say. But Nikon should have made a much bigger splash with the first Cinema Z camera. It should have been a cutting edge flagship at a really aggressive price. Instead they have gone with what is practically a point & shoot camera. It fits the philosophy of the "DSLR video revolution" though doesn't it? Cheap (by today's norm), small, light, cinematic image quality, great codec and hybrid photo/video features. Micro SD and HDMI is idiotic though.

    Nikon Zr is coming

RED's bullshitting about DR infiltrated Nikon. No way this chart translates to reality. Gerald's imatest result and CVP's latitude test shows the useable DR is way less than this
  5. Right, but for those of us familiar with other Nikon products and their video-related features, we can guess that the feature would be supported in the ZR. For people who are not already users of other recent-generation Nikons, it may be unclear which features are in fact supported until the manuals actually show up online. In fact some features can't be found even in the manuals.

    Nikon Zr is coming

There are some great things in this camera: R3D code, huge screen, 32-bit float audio, IBIS etc but then some real head scratchers like the micro sd, micro HDMI, battery card slot, no fan, no open gate and overall confusion with the dual color sciences that indeed makes this a Frankenstein camera. Clearly feels like a first gen collab product. I think I'll wait to see the next iteration but it's still very encouraging and solid effort.
  7. There are some ISO comparison tests with the FX3 on YT that shows that the C50 matches if not surpasses the FX3 at ISO12800. And beats it at the more usable second base ISO6400. I think ISO6400 is a much smarter second base ISO and with the 7K oversampling and bypassable NR it makes it a better camera for low light situations. FX3 still has better rolling shutter but as you say 14ms is still decent. For me personally, C50 is very exciting because of open-gate, the new simultaneous multi ratio recording, the dual menu system taken from R5C & the various resolution and codecs. All that in a FX3 form factor with XLR top handle. It's a true hybrid. The only real let down is the lack of IBIS and mechanical shutter for flash photography. As I'm on multiple lens ecosystem (Canon, Sony, Leica) I was up to now set on either R5ii, Z8/Z9/ZR or FX2/FX3ii but the C50 may pull me back into Canon. Of course this means my Sony glass will remain on my FS7 but I love Canon UI, ergos, lenses and color science. I also find Clog is the easiest to grade and WideDR the best SOOC profile. Been getting gorgeous results out of the R5 ii RAW test footage. Again the 3:2 open gate is what's tipping the scale for me personally. I jut love having that full width 3:2 image to play around in post and being able to capture 16:9 & 9:16 simultaneously is a god send for fast delivery. May also venture into anamorphic now that the camera supports all the desqueeze factors. Lack of IBIS is a bummer but I'm hoping that with the top handle and primes, I won't get much micro jitters when shooting handheld. Hopefully the IS also performs well.

    Nikon Zr is coming

ZR's DR is worst among these four. IBIS in the middle, color arguably the best, AF with native lens is good enough, and okeyish with adapter.
  9. Today
  10. Looks like a nice camera, looking forward to some side by sides with the c50, fx3 and s1ii. AF with adapters, AF with native glass, ibis, colour, dr, battery life.
  11. I’m not convinced that the processor type is the first port of call when someone is wondering whether a camera supports BLE time code. Particularly when they aren’t au fait with recent Nikon releases. Having said that, they DO actually list it on the spec tucked away in other options so I was wrong anyway.
  12. All the Expeed 7 cameras have it so it is expected in this model as well, no need to mention a standard feature I guess.
  13. Nikon Zr uses EXPEED 7 processor same that is in Z6 III, Z8, Z9, etc. Developing a new processor is quite expensive. This basically means that Z6 III, Z8, Z9 also could receive R3D NE and LUT support via firmware update. If this happens Z6 III and Z8 will be better choices as hybrid cameras. Lets see if Nikon will do this or will keep R3D NE exclusive to Zr and future Cinema cameras. I am also interested to see how R3D NE compares to NRAW. Nikon Zr is a cool camera but agree with others - it is a strange animal. Part vlogging similar to Sony ZV-E1 part cinema camera.
  14. OK, I’ve managed to do spot it in a flash of a menu jn a non-related part of a ZR review. They’ve gone for the weird to have it but then not mention it route.
  15. If it is the z6iii underneath then that has wireless timecode over BLE from the UltraSync/AirGlu eco system. The specs of the ZR list that it has BLE but makes NO mention of it using it for UltraSync/AirGlu. Weird if it didn’t have it but also if it does have it but they have left it off the specs. I’m sure one of the many extensive in depth launch day reviews on YouTube will clarify it.
  16. Yep, Nikon sells like 700 000 cameras, and my guess RED only a few thousands at best. The economies of scale are enormous when you think the Expeed 7 processor is used in nearly all their models.
  17. This camera checks many of the right boxes for me. First of all i am bit tired of the Sony colours. + small + can use sony glass + 6K + i like the design - micro hdmi - button layout It's strange how these companies navigate the market with serious hobbyiests on the one side and big companies on the other side ( who do not really care wether the cam costs 3 or 5 k). Main question for me: Is it fun to use? Does it have the mojo? Will my live be cinematic?
  18. This camera is using the same S1II sensor and Lumix was able to squeeze a lot from it. More than Nikon. So, what is Lumix missing to make a camera similar to the C50/Zr? Nothing.
  19. That's exactly why they started with an "entry-level" camera. They are re-implementing their algorithms in Nikon's processors and hardware, which are cheaper and more efficient (it wasn't hard to figure that out, given the economies of scale). We should also expect big news regarding other Red features, such as the integration of a global shutter sensor. I imagine that the process will then be a two-way street. A future Red camera will have Nikon processors and technology.
  20. I think this is a really compelling camera, especially for the price, BUT the card slot on the bottom, lack of active cooling, and no back up recording is really disappointing. The screen is very cool, though. I really hope more cameras come with larger, brighter screens like this. If I was choosing between the C50 and the ZR I think I'd go with the ZR on price alone, but also because of IBIS. Overall though, I'm pretty content with my Lumix S5IIX and two S5s set up. None of these releases have made me feel like I'm missing out.
  21. For the aforementioned reasons I would call it a Frankenstein release. First try in the pure video centric camera market. Regardless of the marketing monstrous rigs showed, this camera is a pro v-logging tool and essentially a naked run&gun kit. Internal 32 bit audio and ibis are the key points and let's see if Nikon was able to solve its issue with that sensor as Lumix did.

    Nikon Zr is coming

Between the two, the new Canon and this, obviously if you are in the Canon ecosystem or with Nikon, the choice is obvious, providing either of these things can do what you need them to do. I think they both look the part, but neither of them really suit my needs so still perfectly happy I went full Lumix, and even if they had been Captain Amazeballs, I still wouldn't have jumped. If I had gone for one of them, I'd have gone the Nikon route, but only if I'd stayed within the Nikon body, adapted E Mount glass camp where I partially previously was. I am happy they exist even if they don't tick all my boxes.
  23. I don't really know much about what their highlight recovery actually does, but if you're talking about super-whites (levels above 100) then they might get decoded and might be available in the nodes? My GX85 records super-whites and in my standard node tree for it I just pull down the Gain slightly and they just get pulled down into the working range. If you're talking about the smart behaviour of using some colour channels to recreate a clipped colour channel then I think reducing the saturation of the highlights might do broadly the same thing. There are also other tricks you can use like combining masks with the channel mixer to effectively copy one (or both) other channels to the one that's clipped. That will preserve the saturation of the recovered area, useful for recovering things like tail-lights or flames, whereas reducing the saturation obviously won't.
  24. I feel like this is a supercharged version of Sigma Fp
  25. $2,200 at B&H. The memory card placement is definitely funky, and the rumored micro sd second slot is real (why, Nikon, why?), but for me, I think this camera really nails the form factor and the price point. My question will be whether to trade for a new one in October when they ship or wait a bit for the first wave of returns/sales to hit. Even though it uses a lesser Redcode, the size of this camera is a perfect match for Leica M glass and full frame makes it a better match for that glass than my Komodo/Komodo-X. Just wish it had any sort of internal ND to make it easier to use some of my beloved Leica lenses that don't easily take filters (like the 35/3.5). Also, any of the pictures showing it in a full rig sort of boggle my mind. It kind of plays against the strengths of a super tiny raw-shooting video camera with a big, beautiful rotating internal screen.
