    Lumix S9

I think for some who don’t want to spend time in post, these software features are truly moving the needle forward in a very positive way.

For it to be full frame then f2.8 might be tricky ish to keep it super compact. But at the very least a 28mm f4 (i.e. roughly doubling the 14mm f2.5 specs) should have been possible!! (or heck, why not at least f5.6??? Why does it have to be f8 for goodness sake??) Maybe third-party lenses will have to come to the rescue to say the Panasonic S9 as a true "everyday walk around camera". Such as this pancake lens for only US$99 (manual focus only), 35mm f5.6: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1628287-REG/7artisans_photoelectric_a006b_l_35mm_f_5_6_lens_for.html Or the Sigma 17mm f/4, or Sigma 24mm f/3.5 , or Sigma 45mm f/2.8, all are autofocus lenses: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1757611-REG/sigma_415969_17mm_f_4_dg_dn.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1605137-REG/sigma_24mm_f_3_5_dg_dn.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1492965-REG/sigma_360969_45mm_f_2_8_dg_dn.html Or adapted M Mount lenses: Voigtlander 21mm f/4 or Voigtlander 28mm f/2.8 or Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5 or Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 or Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4 or Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 or Voigtlander 40mm f/2.8: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/483740-REG/Voigtlander_BA211P_Color_Skopar_21mm_f_4_0_P.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1781163-REG/voigtlander_ba379e_28mm_f_2_8_color_skopar_m_type.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/326913-REG/Voigtlander_45BA245C_Color_Skopar_Pan_35mm_f_2_5.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1494427-REG/voigtlander_ba347c_nokton_classic_35mm_f_1_4.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/355977-REG/Voigtlander_45BA246B_Nokton_40mm_f_1_4_M_Mount.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1378116-REG/voigtlander_ba342a_nokton_40mm_f_1_2_aspherical.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1695929-REG/voigtlander_ba324e_heliar_40mm_f_2_8_aspherical.html Or instead of Voigtlander, go with a cheap Chinese brand of lenses, TTArtisan 28mm f/5.6, 7artisans Photoelectric 35mm f/5.6 (same US$99 lens as before, but in a more versatile M Mount instead of L Mount), AstrHori 40mm f/5.6, 7artisans 28mm f/5.6: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1711280-REG/ttartisan_f2856blm_28mm_f_5_6_lens_for.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1628285-REG/7artisans_photoelectric_a006b_35mm_f_5_6_lens_for.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1794221-REG/astrhori_a11b_40mm_f_5_6_lens_for.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1702411-REG/7artisans_photoelectric_a011b_28mm_f_5_6_lens_for.html Nah, as it is adapted M Mount (unless there is an adapter which grants AF to manual M Mount lenses?? I've seen such amazing feats accomplished with an E Mount adapter, has anybody done this for L Mount too??) The Panasonic S9 is however a massive improvement of any smartphone camera, and so long as they make it nearly as very easy to post immediately to social media as it's possible with your own smartphone, then perhaps the S9 still has a niche for the social media addicted content creators. The integrated gimbal the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 has is hard for anything else to compete against in this market niche. It's better than the IBIS of the S9 for sure! But for photographers, then the S9 is going to be more appealing than a DJI Osmo Pocket 3
  4. I wonder if that indicates they've ceased production of this camera?

    24p is outdated

Ah, right... I'd forgotten about the frame interpolation. Doing it your way bakes in the 3:2 pattern, but at least it won't look like someone accidentally slipped the audience something in their drinks!
  7. I've used it on my 700D and yeah, it's not winning any UI awards that's for sure. Then again, I hear that the Sony menus give people nightmares so who knows. But when it comes to the image, it's like I said, different people wanting different things. All the professional colourists are taking the high-end Alexa footage and doing NR, softening / blurring, adding grain, and sometimes adding halation and diffusion - even on top of the vintage primes many movies were shot on. Then on the forums everyone is like "Dune looked AMAZING, I wish my films looked like that... anyway, who wants a 16K camera with no noise at ISO 100,000 and sharper Sigma Art lenses?" Yeah. People are even converting 24p movie clips to 4K 60p using AI and uploading those to YT. I suppose that's in-keeping with our current phase of revisionist history πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  15. A weak person looks at a wrongdoing and thinks, ah too bad that's normal because look over there - the others are doing it too, whereas any person of any principals or character all would strongly condemn it. You just find the large scale fraud 'merely disappointing' tho. LOL! Through no fault of his own you are going to suggest next?? For those he cheated out of career success it wasn't merely disappointing and if you think it is 'merely disappointing' to have disgusting ethics, cheat in sport, do drugs and try to cover it up, and profit in prize money, fame and sponsorship from a huge sporting fraud, then perhaps someone like you would have no qualms about joining them yourself or colluding with people like that given the chance as it's 'not that bad'. Just like a certain camera boss is suspected of doing.

And pocket 3 ! I love the portability of my Ricoh gr3x but for video I was liking the pocket 3 but man, the s9 images I’m starting to see are pretty amazing. I’m fixated on the garbage f8 released with it but I’m now curious are there 3rd party options for the s9 that have small footprint lenses that can be thrown alongside the s9 Ina. Fanny pack?
  17. And of course I meant to type 24 (not 23) there. I find the projectionists can vary a lot in experience. They can range from the very experienced to volunteers. If you can make your file fool proof it'll hopefully look good.
  18. Wish I had more money. Emmanuel, this looks fantastic, and I just mentioned it in another thread so I thought I'd come here and state the same thing... As much as I like the image from these BM cameras... and this is just gorgeous... I am starting to notice when I look around at the low to no budget film community that everyone is using a BM camera now and everything looks the same. It seems the influencers on YT have developed a canned cinematic look, that although looks nice, it's also rather boring looking in some ways... or I guess the better way to say it is that it looks too similar to everything else. But... I really must say that it looks fantastic and if I had the money, I would have ordered one by now, especially at this price.
  19. Sorry, I have been meaning to reply to this for the past few weeks but life has gotten in the way. You know, it's so easy to not even mention or think about the obvious production value he had by shooting at that event. In some ways, I even glossed over that in my praise of the video and it may add to the reason why I liked the camera in the first place. Now I'm a stubborn prick, so I cannot move on from it until I have made a proper film with it. You guys can be discussing 6K and I'll still be yammering on about the 1080p image from the 5D3 and ML Raw.
  20. Of course, people have different use cases and I haven't been following this thread too closely, but from the title, I thought it was a desert island choice... not if the desert island had a thriving film market. That said, you aren't necessarily wrong about the 5D3, although I have found it to have close to 12 stops of usable DR when you expose for the highlights. It's actually pretty insane how much information exists in the highlights on this camera. That said, it's definitely not a camera I would recommend to someone who was working on a production for pay. I believe Pete Ohs used the camera because that's what he owns, so it was probably a pragmatic choice more than anything else, but since he has had multiple films shot on the 5D3 and ML Raw over the past few years at SXSW, Sundance, Slamdance, etc... it should be proof enough that the image is more than good enough for narrative filmmaking. I use it because I love the image and the ergonomics and haven't found a better one for what I want to capture. To change the subject slightly, I have been impressed with what these new, prosumer cams can do. Even the Sigma FP... which is more similar to the 5D3 and ML Raw than anything else... in a lot of ways... except it doesn't have the highlight retention that the Canon has. But between Blackmagic, Sony, Canon and Panasonic and even Fuji... there are so many options that it's pretty insane and the gap between them and an Alexa is narrowing. But... Someone posted in another thread a video of pretty young woman shot with the FF BM 6K camera that's currently on sale and I must say it looks gorgeous, but there really is something I am noticing.... all of these cameras look the same and it's this weird nod to YouTube "filmmakers" ... think about how weird that is... people are starting to consider what is considered cinematic by what videos on YouTube look like. I have no interest in that. I'd rather shoot a film on a camcorder in night shot mode if I'm being honest.

I think for the target audience, the main competition is smartphones. Everyone this camera is aimed at is probably using their phone now to take photos and shoot videos; this camera allows them to post to social media just as quickly but with higher quality. But as cell phones get better, IQ gets better, raw capture improves, lens options improve, etc., bridge cameras like the S9 seem doomed.
  22. Panasonic is offering a few deals in France: S9 + 18mm f/1.8 for 2000 euros. The trouble is all those primes are a little big for it. It's a shame.
  23. We've come so far in 9 years! The S9 is much bigger, no hot shoe, no EVF, no mechanical shutter, less of a time limit in 1080p. It does have WAY better codecs, a full frame sensor, IBIS, and PDAF. The killer is the lack of lenses. The GM5 had so many primes and zooms that were/are a perfect fit. I'm jealous of your red one!

That's the one I got last summer!πŸ˜‚ @John Matthews It came with the 12-32 lens, two batteries, a 32GB card, a roughed up original faux-leather case, all for around 240 Eur iirc. It has a hot shoe and came with a flash too, a feature which Panny full frame S9 users have to miss out on.:) I only did a test walk with it so far though. My LX15 going too strong as my carry around camera, even making my GX85 collect dust.
