On Sunday you will be able to buy a brand new Canon 1D C 4K DSLR for $7999 at Adorama. It is currently $12,000 and the price drop will be applied on the 1st February. I’m expecting others such as B&H in the US and CVP in the UK to follow suit as it’s an official Canon discount. This puts the internally recording 4K DSLR in line with the Sony FS7, also an internally recording 4K cinema camera.
Above is the new EOS 5Ds, a high megapixel full frame camera from Canon. Specs have been leaked online ahead of the official announcement next week.
I’m helping SLR Magic collect feedback from filmmakers about the forthcoming full set of APO cinema lenses. The $2k 50mm T2.1 is the first of the set. This will be followed by 4 more, but which ones? All will be APO formulas, full frame and equally high image quality. They will be T2.1 with the exception of the very wide 21mm lens which will be a T3.1.
The SLR Magic APO HyperPrime CINE 50mm T2.1 is a soon to be released high end PL mount cinema lens. The expected price is $1999, less than half the price of a Zeiss compact prime.
The Cooke S4i Mini 50mm T2.8 is $7850 at B&H and the full set is around $45,000.
How do they compare?
Last February I made the first EOSHD video quality charts 2014. This was an at-a-glance chart of image quality delivered by every camera I can possibly think. This year I’ve decided only to include the cameras I’ve direct experience of shooting with in my own filmmaking projects, with only a few exceptions such as the Sony F35 and Canon C300. I’ve also removed cameras that have been superseded by very similar ones (such as the GH2 by the G6, sharing the same sensor).
Here are the results…
Panasonic have today released V2.1 firmware for the GH4. This gives us timecode and recording start/stop triggering over HDMI to Atomos devices such as the Shogun 4K recorder. The firmware also adds a few other features, read on to find out what they are…
I don’t use FCPX as my editor, and why should I use it to transcode media when we have Compressor for that?
The answer may surprise you…
The Atomos Shogun now has the major firmware release we’ve all been waiting for – playback.
