If this rumour at SAR is true it could turn the industry on its head.

Sony is about to wage war on the Super 35mm format, and wage a war on pros being locked into one line of lenses.

Their higher end video cameras are going full frame with a mirrorless mount.

The NEX 5R is coming on August 28th according to Sony Alpha Rumors - and Sony is finally taking DSLRs into the ’10s. This camera features a new app platform (a first on a camera like this).

The camera has WiFi built in and the apps could be more interesting than just a few gimmicky filters, because it is possible Sony may provide a full SDK / dev kit for developers. This would be required if third party apps are planned. But it may also be the case that only Sony will provide apps, with each firmware update.

A dev kit is basically an open door for hackers to improve video functionality, after which we won’t call them hackers but developers.

Sony released a new video camera today but it seems to have confused a lot of people.

It isn’t a future consumer camera. It is a low end ENG camera for shoulder mounted video work.
It isn’t a cheap FS100. It is a NEX 5N in an ENG body with XLR inputs. (Similarly the VG20 is a NEX 5N in a high end consumer camcorder body)

Instead this is practical tool for run & gun documentary shooters, live event shooters, news gathers and corporate video.

Most other kinds of filmmakers are much better off with the FS100 or a DSLR.
