Leading for now, but have Canon got it wrong with RF lenses?

In the last post we saw how EF established Canon as camera market leader, keeping mediocre DSLRs afloat well into the final chapter of the previous decade. EF lenses were critical.

These lenses helped in the transition to Canon’s own mirrorless cameras and with EF, users were locked into Canon’s ecosystem, despite the growing threat of mirrorless in the second half of the 2010s. During that time EF even became the standard choice for video shooters across three completely different systems – Cinema EOS cameras, mirrorless cameras, and Blackmagic who continue to use the EF mount even in 2023.

However, in 2023 I sense trouble ahead for Canon. RF lenses, let’s face it, just don’t have the same appeal.

This video very clearly shows how impressive the new Kipon EF adapter is for Micro Four Thirds. It is shown working with the Canon 70-200mm F2.8L on the Panasonic GX7. I might even expect performance to be more impressive on the GH4 thanks to its faster AF engine.

Revealed: Metabones EF Sony E-Mount adapter optically defective

UPDATE: Metabones inform me they have fixed the latest adapters with an anti-reflective part. If your adapter suffers from reflections, if yours has any of the issues below, simply contact Metabones and send your adapter back for a service

As if the initial non-functioning firmware with the NEX 5N and NEX 7 wasn’t bad enough, it appears Metabones will have to completely re-design the recent EOS lens to E-Mount adapter.

Metabones EF to E-Mount adapter for Sony NEX Review

The Metabones / Conurus EOS adapter for Sony NEX is not the first to have seamless electronic aperture control on NEX bodies for Canon EF / EFS lenses but it is the smallest and most affordable.

What is build quality like? I’ve had some Metabones adapters before, namely the ones for Contax G to Micro Four Thirds and NEX. These were far better built and manufacturers than their Chinese equivalents, and made in Japan. The same goes for the new Metabones EF to E-Mount adapter.
