Canon 1D X Mark II review part 1 – why superior colour means it’s game over for my Sony A7S II

Canon have made the biggest step forward with their DSLR technology in 2016 than I’ve seen since 2009’s 5D Mark II.

It isn’t the 5D Mark IV that has excited me so much as the 1D X Mark II, a camera that will see out the next 6 years as the benchmark for others to follow.

Canon 5D Mark IV “will be 1080p” with Canon LOG

I received an email from a NAB show visitor today who had spoken off the record to Canon and was told the company believes a 4K 5D Mark IV would completely overshadow the recently released C100 Mark II and so wouldn’t happen, but that Canon LOG would likely go into the camera to allow shot-matching with the XC10.

So to segment specs based on price, Canon is allegedly sticking to 1080p on future DSLRs. The exception is the 4K XC10 which isn’t a competitor to the C100 Mark II or C300 Mark II as it features a tiny 1″ sensor and fixed camcorder-style zoom lens by comparison.

The Canon 1D C review

I shot with the Canon 1D C and Canon C100 Cinema EOS cameras recently with SlashCam in Berlin. The 1D C is the most Jekyll and Hyde camera I’ve ever used and a difficult camera to review. The 1D C is a marriage of beautiful 4K images and an unwilling partner who hasn’t shifted an inch to accommodate it.
