BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III

I was thinking the same. I have the Atomos on order and would love to run the footage to that instead of a CF card. Either way, I'm excited about this er development. Where do I spend my money ML?

Unless the ML team figure out how to write to a Ninja or Hyperdeck shuttle down the HDMI or implement file spanning to break free of the 4GB file limit this development although amazing is going to have little practical use with takes restricted to about 40 seconds (4MBx24/25fps=100MB/sec)

Posted this on Bloom's blogpost. Part of me thinks he realised he dropped the ball on this one and wants the whole thing to go away. Like Andrew said with great power comes great responsibility.

The other day i put down a preorder on a Mexican wrap at a food stand in Soho.   If enough people put down a preorder I might get the wrap next year, so everyone do it!   I had my preorder on the

Somebody has to say it, so i'll go first.   2012: BMCC (Black Magic Cinema camera) 2013: MLCC (Magic Lantern Cracked camera)

Really depends what you are shooting.... For music videos and similar.... 40 seconds is fine.

Perhaps only for music videos & even then it's not ideal. Certainly not suitable for narrative drame or any of a host of other genres never mind run'n'gun documentary. It's fine for beautiful demo pieces as we have already seen but 40 seconds is seriously limiting for almost anything else.

I had my preorder on the one with the sour cream but then they announced sourcream and chilli so I changed my order.

All this time I've not been eating because I've been chasing sauces.

I think I might just go and buy a sandwich and actually have lunch, at least then I can spend my time enjoying food not worrying about a potential wrap.

commercials.... alot of people's bread and butter. Stock video too, really useful.

people get a bit too insular on here, thinking everyone who uses a camera is working on narrative. That said, it will still make a great B camera for wide shots or super shallow DOF, low light etc.

If you are shooting long takes, interviews or weddings, yea... forget this unless the hdmi mode works out.

Continuous takes longer than 40 sec are the exception rather than the rule actually. In my understanding file spanning is trivial stuff, I am sure they will get it going just as soon as they assign raw recording to a dedicated button :) Even Vitaliy was able to get file spanning on the GH2 hack without full control over the OS.

I don't think there are any CF to SATA converters, but the CF interface is fairly standard, so it wouldn't surprise me if a CF to SATA converter popped up at some point, now that there's demand for one.

IIRC, CF uses an IDE interface, which PCs have used for years. So, maybe you could hardwire the appropriate pins inside a dummy CF card, then to an external IDE to SATA interface.

"First person to find a way to make a 5D Mark III CF card slot to SATA cable is going to be an almost effortless millionaire :)"

If CF is defined as 167MB/s max doesn't that imply that theoretical CF to SATA cable is still going to be limited by the CF port speed?

ah yeah it'd be interesting to see what kinda rate we can get at 720p.

Also, can you use a compact flash to SSD converter, and just trick the door sensor into thinking it's closed by taping something in there?

Then you get huge write speeds and capacity with a 480GB SSD.

I think the CF interface tops out at 150MB/s, could be wrong on that. SSDs would be nice for the capacity but I think 1000x or maybe 1100x is the max for the current CF spec.

I've tried the higher frame rates now.

960x540 at 60fps works fine, but some aliasing.

1920x540 is squashed looking.

1280 x 720 is actually 1280 x 672, and looks a bit squashed too.

But the card can handle it pretty reliably at 48fps.

Next on my list to try is anamorphic lens & 1920x1280 (3:2), that is going to be my preferred mode. From 3:2 with the Iscorama you will get roughly 2.35:1 :)

Yeah, it's 167MB/s exactly ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CompactFlash#Speed ) which I wasn't aware of. Otherwise my idea from previous posts might have worked. Another question is what are real speeds of those 1000x CF cards?? In ML forum most tests don't exceed 110MB/s (write speed). Is it a card or the camera limitation?

Can you please try 4:3 as well, for 2x users?

I'd be interested in the max resolution, maybe 1706x1280p but also 1440x1080p for example, to bring the data rate down a bit.

Even 1296x1080p for 2.40:1 with 2x anamorphic could be interesting.

Don't wanna burst bubbles around here, but while all of this is great... only 40 seconds of recording time is not gonna cut it for narrative. Hence, I don't think this will be the Black Magic killer everyone is saying it will be. If BlackMagic Pocket/Production can shoot for several minutes, WITH audio, TV and Cinema shooters like myself will need to stick with it.

Still, a nice little treat for people who only shoot demo videos or music videos, I guess.

Do you want to try a be a little more patronising?

Music videos can be beautiful, with just as much thought and effort going into them as a narrative. Some of the most talented people i know "only shoot music videos".

This, to me at least, is just as creative and interesting as a narrative... If not more so.... and could easily be put together with even 30 second takes.
