    Fuji XH-2/S

Blackmagic 6k pro does I think...? I'm not even that bothered about internal if someone would just make an adaptor to go between the body and lens as Canon does for their R bodies and ef lenses. Fotodiox also do something for at least Fuji users so there's at least that. I wouldn't wish to sacrifice anything else to have internal ND such as IBIS however.

    Fuji XH-2/S

I'd be surprised if it had a built in ND, but otherwise I'd expect Fuji to deliver something pretty special. I moved from Fuji (XT3) for my stills and video work because I felt the S5/S1H/S1R combo was a better platform for me than the XT4. Plus, there isn't a single lens (other than the cinema lenses) that Fuji produces (at the time anyway) that I liked for video use, so adapted Sigma. I'm not looking to replace my Lumix combo (above) at this time/this year, but may well do so next year and a return to Fuji would be my second choice behind a next gen S line, with a 4/3rds Olympus/Lumix now a distant 3rd. My hope is that Fuji knocks it out of the park with the XH2...and then some time between then and early Spring '23, Pannyboy comes along and kicks everyone's arse because I feel I'm just beginning to get to grips with an L Mount based system and have zero desire to switch to anything that is 'sideways', but quantifiably ahead (of what I have now) and removes the few remaining niggles I have with my current set up. It will be at least interesting to see what the 2 Fuji XH2 options will be...
  3. I tried that. Once. I couldn't get past the fact I had gotten used to mirrorless WYSIWYG and the experiment ended at that point. But re. the whole manual vs auto iso thing, my wedding this weekend (I am still at, Day 3/3) I decided to give auto iso a go for video as well as photo. For stills, I always shoot auto iso with a chosen aperture and min shutter speed. Except low light static shots such as buildings etc where I usually select 800 iso and trust the excellent IBIS for slower shutter speed stuff...which reminds me I could also lower my shutter speed from min 1/250th to 1/60th or even slower...note to self for next wedding...a bit rusty after just 6 in 2.5 years! For video though, I have always set manual ISO but as a one man band, I've experienced a few issues such as that carefully set, unmanned static ceremony cameras, exposure fixed in the sun...and then it turned cloudy on and off and...argh... So I flipped to setting the exposure in bright sun and then set the only variable as iso and the camera can take care of that. Used it for everything all the time and quite like that approach allowing the camera to take care of that one thing for me when the light changes. One less thing to think about.
  4. I was a bit skeptical regarding this camera, mainly the stills side, but if I had a pot of cash, a clean slate and you could actually buy one, for my kind of hybrid use, it’s where I’d plop my money. But none of the above exists so I shall continue to sit on my empty pot and wait in hope that ole Pannyboy continues the S line with something thicc. Just not too thicc…
  5. I don’t know about $ and presume it will be about the same, but storage can be had at around 20£/20€ per 1TB, so pretty cheap IMO? Iphone 13 mini however, with 256gb storage, how much?! Well over 1k euros… Equivalent 12’s, almost half that… But I’m not in any rush to replace my 8 at the moment, mainly because I have near zero time for anything personal right now and won’t most of the rest of this year.
  6. I think the main downside to the phone is ergonomically it’s shit. Tiny lenses and less low light capability aside etc and of course there are various software solutions that can overcome some of that, but for pro use, nah. It’s not even the ‘what would they think of me’ scenario as what people think of what gear choices I make doesn’t concern me, so for me it’s not so much a case of could you, but should you? My personal line is the compact camera. I have zero issues using a compact camera for pro use and to be honest, if any of them had 4K 50/60p, I’d be using them for all my video work. I used to use only a Sony RX100v for an entire season. OK, I had to limit the clips as it overheated a lot and low light, it was a bit shit. Last year and this, I use a Sony ZV1 on a tripod with a powerbank, for my full length ceremony and speeches productions. That side of what I deliver to clients is not meant to be some work of art, but long duration, as it happened, single take productions. And for that, it’s just fine and for speeches in lower light, I’m lighting the scene anyway. All my considered capture throughout the day is all full frame Lumix. So my pecking order as it were is: ’Proper’ kit for serious filmmaking + compact kit for static longer form stuff + phone for all things not work related. I do have an itch for an X100V or a Sigma FP though… 😉
  7. Outside of work or being a ‘keen amateur’, most people are best served with a decent phone. I know that for the last 3-4 years, I have gravitated over to using my phone for anything that isn’t work because… A: It’s convenient B: It’s good enough (and these things just keep getting better) I was late to (smart) phones really, starting out with an iPhone 5, then 7, currently 8+ (which replaced both my 7 and my iPad mini). Probably not this year, but next I reckon I’ll go for whatever is the highest spec, but previous gen and in the smallest size. I’m not even sure where things are right now with Apple but is it 13 or 14…but one gen back for the best balance of bang for my euro. And it will be an iPhone, not because I am a fanboy, but it’s just easier to keep it all in house across phones, laptops, iPads etc.
  8. I’m on that fence with the useable one side and dependable on the other… Shot my first 12+ hour wedding of the season with 3x Lumix cameras yesterday and for stills, 9/10. For general video use, 7 or maybe even an 8/10. It’s just the forward motion tracking where it gets sketchy. Sometimes it will (mostly) but more often it won’t. 2/10.
  9. Not necessarily, an integrated grip could use the same batteries as an option grip as the integrated would have say 2 of the same? But as much as I’d like to see the choice of options, yes, it’s a bit unlikely in this times.

    DJI Action 2

Update… DJI have recently launched a super slim case that ‘solves’ the overheating issue. Whether it will or not I shall find out soon enough and mine has not yet overheated to date. But then it’s pretty cool this time of year. Best thing about it is it’s free. And the shipping is also free. Which seems a roundabout way, but without using the actual words, that it was/is an issue. Maybe Canon will ask DJI to make one for the R5? 😜

    Sigma FP

If flash is required, then I agree.
  12. You mean like the time I sent my old one out across a bay to film a lighthouse and coming back there was a headwind and even in sport mode it was barely moving? 😜 I was stood on the clifftop wall of a sea fort arm outstretched to try and catch it because the app had been beeping like crazy for minutes and was showing 1%. The updraught from the cliff was also pushing it up along with the headwind pushing it away. Caught it and it died literally 5 seconds later. But for those 5 seconds, it would have been on the rocks in a gazillion pieces 100 ft below. I immediately stepped off the wall, sat against it and said "fuck" about 100 times until my breathing calmed down. It wasn't the drone I was bothered about, - that's insured. It was the material I had captured for the wedding I was at.

    Sigma FP

Thanks for sharing this, - fantastic. Actually, just yesterday I was researching a rear mounted option such as this because I utterly despise the top mounted option everyone else seems to use! I think I could give this a go later this year, but use the Lumix 24-105 purely because I would want the stability and requirement to not change a lens, ie, try a used FP and the lens I already have and then go from there. Or not. My 'go to' focal lengths are: 20-50mm indoor and 35-105mm outdoor and the 24-105 obviously covers that except the extreme wide end. I'd switch to an OIS prime once it got dark and whilst I don't think (?) there is a native f2 or faster option (with OIS), there are a couple of adapted options. Most likely, if I'm going to do it, it would be towards the end of my season, so mid/late September because by that time, I will need to have made a decision re. 2023 which would be: A. Preferred option to stick within the L Mount system, but possibly move a body or two around from the current line up of S1H, S1R and S5. Particularly interested in any possible S2H/R providing it would 100% be available from early Spring. B. My second preferred option would be to go as Sigma as possible. If I could, I'd go entirely Sigma, but struggling a bit as things stand with the FP-L vs the S1R and the FP vs the S1H, but this config. of the FP could tempt me to move from the S1H... C. Fuji GFX 100s for stills and a pair of XH2's for video. I was a Fuji guy and could be a Fuji guy again and the only reason I am not currently a Fuji guy is because they currently do not have the system that works for me. OK, I could make a Fuji system work, but right now, I prefer my current set up. D. Stick with what I currently have for at least another year. E. Something else. Nikon possibly, but highly unlikely to be Canon or Sony. But I am not actively looking to switch for the sake of switching. If something else cannot do something quantifiably better for my specific needs, I won't change. I hate change for change sake and prefer stability. However, I make no secret of the fact that I am always looking for the perfect set up for my needs which are: 1. The most minimal set up possible but one that 2. delivers an extremely high quality output and at the same time 3: should be a joy to use. I don't mind a few quirks or idiosyncrasies, a few compromises even, but I had to draw the line at the FP-L last year when I was considering it as my principal photography tool. But I did fall in love quite a bit with the one I had on loan from Sigma France and came close to going with one for video work instead of the S1H, but went with the latter because it was far less compromised. The conclusion of my ramble is I see something like the Sigma FP as being a bit like a restomod Porsche 911 from the 1980's, ie, it's far cooler than a newer model and if it's tweaked and used as it's meant to be used, it will bring far more smiles per mile than something arguably 'better' on paper, but with less soul. The solution above could be a 'soul' camera one. For video at least. I still don't think I could make it work for stills on a number of levels. A FP for personal use stills yes, but all of my pro work (thinking mainly OCF here), then no.

    Sigma FP

I'm actually quite tempted to get a used FP and stick the Smallrig cage with wooden handle on it plus my Lumix 24-105mm f4 (for range, stability, OIS) and try that as a run n' gun unit. Not keen to build it out though. Certainly not with an additional screen, but a base mounted drive could be an option. Really though, I wouldn't want to spend much money on it so it would ideally just be a used FP and a spare battery so one could always be on charge. The only thing is I'm an Adobe suite user and Cinema DNG doesn't play well with Premiere I believe? There's something about an FP-L for stills plus FP for filming (plus static S5 or S1H on tripod) that appeals, but probably still too many compromises for me...
  15. I had (still have) the original Mavic Air for the last 4 years, but recently replaced it with the Air 2s as my Air has been crashed that many times it doesn’t quite fly straight anymore! Early days, but a noticeable step up everywhere including much better controller and a decent hike in quality of output. Much better battery life also. I had hoped to get a good amount of flying time in as practice since I’ve had it, but wet or windy Spring weather has prevented much of that. Suits my needs.
  16. Say what?! Who’s feeling ‘frustrated and cornered? I stated I’d like my next camera system, whenever and whatever that may be, to consist of 3 identical bodies. None of the 3 I have make me feel in anyway frustrated or cornered and I’m not looking for the perfect camera anymore than 99% of the rest out there. I would hope that might be the lovechild of the S1R, the S1H and the S5. With better tracking AF for that 5% of the time I need it. But until such a time comes…and it will come, I’m very happy using what I have and in a career I have few concerns about and frustrated, cornered or desperately seeking Susan doesn’t come into it. You have me confused with some other bloke Kye 😜 It’s a forum. It’s just chit chat whilst I mostly twiddle my thumbs ahead of a projected 400+ day workload that starts in 4 days after 2.5 years getting by on just 10% of what should have been. I’m in my groove, my mojo is overflowing, bring it on. Any issues that may exist are beyond my control and right now, I can’t think of a single one. My kit is essential for what I do. Not necessarily any more or less so than anyone else’s situation but as the only (that I know of) one man band who shoots full photography as a photographer and full video as a videographer, at the same time at the same gig, it’s perhaps more important than it might be for others. And what I have ticks every box. Except that 5% AF tracking and I have a workaround for that. But none of my 3 main cameras are 100% perfect for my needs…but the combo of…and everything else I use, is the best suited to my specific needs based on what exists at this time. ’Frustrated and cornered’ made me laugh though 😘
  17. Inspired by the Oscars, Will slap on a vintage lens some time soon.
  18. 3 questions: Q1: Will you live in your car whilst writing the script? Q1b: If so, what car do you drive/will you be living in? Q2: Can we assume you will get the haircut and will post a pic as proof? Q3: Will you use autofocus? (Just keep in mind that no serious pro uses AF). Otherwise sounds like a great project and I’d offer my services but, A: Too busy the rest of this year and B: Doesn’t work well in groups of more than me. Looking forward to the photography site also. There isn’t really anywhere I use for that side of things right now, so an EO Shed version for stills would be welcome.
  19. Aaaaargh... 5k 25p (30 and 24 available in NTSC) HLG only...which is fine...but it's pixel:pixel crop mode only! If shooting internally, which I do, only do and only ever will do. At least when shooting hybrid as I do. Ah well, I explored it at least, but across 3 Lumix bodies, all slightly different spec (S1R, S1H, S5), I'll just stick with shooting Natural for consistency across the board. Next time, all 3 bodies are gonna match...
  20. Anyone know where I can get one of those disco light speakers that communes with the other side in slow motion? Asking for a friend.

    Olympus OM-1

Very comprehensive review and thanks for the link. The OM-1 at this time still remains the benchmark camera (inc. lens options) for me, ie, it ticks more boxes than anything else out there. That exists today. 1 disappointment that I hope they fix with firmware and 1 question only I could answer with a test. The auto-ISO. I use it all the time for stills and the implementation sounds like it isn’t great. It never ceases to amaze me how any company can get so much wrong but the drop the ball on something so simple. How the (raw) image quality stacks up against full frame. I could go back easily enough to 24mp FF from 47mp that I currently shoot, but 20mp… I have had several 4/3rd cameras and the best of these was the 16mp EM5 mk II which was OK for stills but I think I’d be shocked if I tried putting something like that up against my S1R today. The thing is, I don’t wish to and won’t change my current system for the sake of change. I would…and at some point will, only when a system ticks as many boxes as my current system, as in on a tech spec level, we are already there, so for me, all that remains is: Size, weight, ergos. Slightly smaller and slightly lighter S1H would be the ideal, so why not the new GH6? Well it’s a contender. More video spec than I need, but it’s also on the list.
  22. Well I’ll be as the old folks say… I bought the camera used and immediately updated to the latest firmware which is I think V1.9 I shoot 4K 50p so forced to shoot 8 bit and .mp4 which is fine because I only use the S1R as my C cam and only during wedding ceremonies where it’s sole purpose is to cover a third ‘bonus’ angle for the occasional random clip while the A and B cam are on sticks. Never even occurred to me it would only be available with .mov and 10 bit 4K 25p! But I checked and that is indeed the case. One factor for certain whenever I change camera bodies again and that is all 3 bodies will be identical. Constantly juggling between the S1R, S1H and S5, playing to their strengths and weaknesses. If I had to pick today, 3x S1H, no question, stills and video. Proved wrong. Thanks @BTM_Pix 😘
  23. HLG photo not video. I am on the most recent firmware and it’s not a profile option for video. Unless anyone can prove otherwise and I would thank you if it turned out to be the case.
  24. Just this morning I was considering this very thing. Damn, but as you got there first, I’m happy to not contest you on this.
  25. Cracked it. I thought I’d give it one last go and based on someone’s suggestion, I tried another angle of attack. Finally, a result equal to or better than I can get out of my tweaked profile. Then I hit a snag. The S1R doesn’t shoot log or even HLG. That’s a bummer because it’s going to cause workflow issues based on my specific use case so although I would now be happy shooting this season using log, I’m going to stick with Natural for consistency. Thanks for all the input folks. It helped.
