It’s insane to see so many people figuring out cooling solutions and even resorting to portable freezers. What’s going on here? People celebrating that they got through a shoot without the cam having a tantrum. Madness.
With this most serious of all cripple hammers, this camera isn’t even adequate as a reliable B-cam.
It’s a shame, it sucks a bit, but there’s a crap load of other tools that will do just fine.
I do however applaud the detective work, interesting. Well done.

The recovery time is totally bogus on Canon camera, that one should be totally removed!

What if they made an adjustment that gave you 45min of 4k HQ, 8k at 25min and4k 120p at 20min and recovery time at 60 minutes max. Would that be enough?
This is all kind of silly if they do. It would still be crippled and everyone would be trying to calculate if it would be usable or not.
Why are we even messing with Canon at this point? Not worth the frustration.

The problem is I don't think Canon is going to "fix" the issue since it was never really a problem for them.
They probably intended to cripple the higher end video modes but got carried away.
Canon Rumors is reporting that the rumored firmware is going to do the following:
Addition of Cinema RAW light option to 8K recording Addition of CLog 3 Increased record time limits (but don’t expect a huge boost) Various bug fixes They are probably going to increase the record times to match the stated record limits that they published but not much more.
The R5/R6 still won't be great for hybrid shooters since the published record limits were really short.

As I look across the room at my Canon bodies and absolute treasure of Canon glass, I'm feeling kind of embarrassed at being a Canon fanboy for so many years. If this kind of behavior is the reward for decades of loyalty then Canon does not understand the lifetime value of a customer!
F*ck them. If this test gets confirmed elsewhere I am cancelling my pre-order and getting a Lumix S1H and S1R.

I suspected Canon to cripple this camera somehow, someway but this artificial heat limit and recovery time is really out of line. Such arrogance!
But you know what? Canon may think they control the market but we have the power to control them by boycotting Canon. Especially nowadays with the camera industry bleeding as it is. Force Canon to stop this BS. How?
If you already purchased the camera, return it. If you have it on order, cancel it. Cancel all orders with Canon. Write letters to Canon showing your disgust. Call Canon and voice your disapproval. Fight Canon with your pocketbook. Stop the BS.

    https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-r5-firmware-update-coming-soon-raw-light-to-be-added-cr2/
^A firmware update is coming soon, but according to the rumor it will add "Increased record time limits (but don’t expect a huge boost)".
My guess is Canon intended to cripple the R5/R6 higher end video modes but got carried away. They probably intended to give the R5/R6 the published record times for higher end video modes (and nothing more), but didn't fully optimize the firmware cripple since such things are a bit hard to get right if you are in a rush to release the cameras.
If this "firmware fix" that Canon rolls out only allows for the published record times and nothing more, then I still think the R5/R6 will be terrible for hybrid shooters.
Moreover, we shouldn't be supporting a company that is so clearly crippling its products all in the name of product segmentation.

Honestly, whether it's incompetence or intentional, the R5 should be reason enough for people to cease supporting this company until they get their shit together.
There are companies that value their customers. Reward them instead.

    Imagine that Canon boardroom meeting.
"Let's create an 8K beast with little RS, RAW video, IBIS, our best auto focus ever... And then cripple it and use overheating to blame it!"
"You're a fucking genius, man. LET'S DO IT!"

The temperature reported by the EXIF data more-or-less corresponds with the Chinese heat gun thermometer tests out there as well and it closely resembles the ambient temp of my room at the moment, I am sweltering in 30 degrees heat!
I suppose the easy test would be to cool the camera right down in a freezer, quickly take 1 shot then analyse that EXIF data.
It is very unlikely the camera is reporting wrong data in the EXIF. It is very basic to get right, even for Canon.

If there is indeed a hardware problem such as the LSI running too hot or certain parts of the chip not turning off when idle, then Canon may have originally developed this kind of temperature monitoring system to keep things in check.
But the fake element of it is that the actual temps my camera is reporting are nowhere near problematic and the recovery timer is completely out of whack with both ambient temps and the actual cool down temps of the electronics.
So it is likely they found a convenient outlet in the temp management system for a classic Cripple Hammer.
I want answers from Canon and I will be seeking them starting tomorrow.

This is incredibly interesting. Would be nice to have a third party try this out and see if the results are replicated.
I think this next firmware is going to “fix” that EXIF temperature reporting. Why the fuck did they implement this absurd recovery timer. It’s beyond the realm of defense for being a “conservative” feature to protect the camera from overheating. It’s straight up bullshit, it seems.
    Great stuff.

EOSHD testing finds Canon EOS R5 overheating to be fake, with artificial timers deployed to lock out video mode. In this test, we will probe my Canon EOS R5’s actual internal temperature in Celsius, as reported by the firmware.
This week CDA-TEK and I are developing an Android app for the Canon EOS R5, which connects to the camera via the Canon API...

It sounds like you'd be better looking at Nikon Z6 with Fringer EF adapter. It's practically an EOS R6 for autofocus and 4K recording... But dead cheap.
Other than that, C200, C500 II, might be options?
    I did

Just a note of caution ... after looking at the RS on the A9II and Sony's glacial release of an A7SII replacement ... add to that a catastrophic fail of an Atomos HDMI mini cable ...
I moved to the 1DX III ... robust ... internal recording of great codecs ... lose a HDMI cable and you can still record internally with something more that the marginal 8bit 4:2:0 of the
    Sony.
However ... may be a case of the Emporer's new clothes ... BM Resolve 16.2.3 cannot render the files without error ... Canon Raw Plugin 1.4 for FCPX does not work ... and the Canon Raw Developer 2.5.0
has a 40% failure rate with files from ... Sony G Tough 512 CFEXpress ... Sandisk 512 CF Express  cards ... so raw on the camera is not something you can use ... Imagine the following ... OK shot the scenes but
now lets do it a couple of more times ... maybe one of these will stick ...
Only camera I have had that has been so good ... and so crippled by the inability of Canon to provide a coherent post development workflow.
When it works ... great stuff ... but God ... even the BMP6K can deliver files that work.
And the amazing thing is that no bloody review on camera called them out ...
    So schade ....

Yeah but the Sony's are 8-bit XAVC non-4K60 UHD cams, A9 doesn't even have log, pixel binning cams have other issues. Always some type of compromise with FF it seems..

32ms RS is definitely not a good number on a +$6K action/sports oriented camera!
But it does looks like 4K RS is always on the high end (i.e +24ms) on all these hybrid FF cams.
I guess this is an area where APS-C / Super35 still dominates (A6xxx series excluded!).

    I know I will get flamed 😂

But to be fair he is pointing out that they will get a camera to test the RS and DR as they do with many cameras. Until it is done and published is just a fate thing but at least it seems there is the intention.
It could be that without you this would not have happened so you have a point, although the RS was not measured by you but by slashcam.
You also mention that you don't see a RS issue with the GFX 100 and yet it seems to have a RS of 28ms (all to be validate by multiple source ideally)...... somebody could argue the same no?
You did not measure RS on the GFX 100, he did not on the 1Dx III. Other have done it, you trust some others trust others etc..

There are not many site left that really test RS and DR and yes we can argue for hours that the tests are not perfect but as they have some consistency is better than nothing.

We should glad that there is some kind of "conflict/competition"  between you guys as it pushes you to really check all the details.....  😉

    Hi, - it's been a long time :-).
The short answer to your question: if you want both the easy way and the option to dig deeper get both FilmConvert and ColorFinale.
The long(er) answer: Well, well, - it all depends. As a matter of fact I also have the fairly new CoreMelt LUTx and have demoed the KojiColor. They all have their weak and strong points. If you want good looking results, quickly and  without much hassle - with LUTs - I think FilmConvert is a great solution. It has few LUTs, they are all good though, but FilmConvert can't load thirdparty LUTs. You can dig deeper in ColorFinale - due to the added curves, vectors and the layers, but ColorFinale has no LUTs preview function, - you have to add the LUT to see the result. The new $49 upgrade should include the option though. ColorFinale can load third party or your own custom LUTs
I would say ColorFinale is a much better grading tool if you want to develop your own grades than FimConvert, -  it is really good for both primary and secondary corrections. If it had masking tools it would be close to perfect. I find the color wheels are difficult to adjust though, but that might just be me.
If you want to mess around with lots of LUTs CoreMelt LUTx has great preview options and nice browser functions for organizing all the LUTs in the world. Has also pretty good color adjustment tools. KojiColor like FilmConvert has few but well executed LUTs and some nice color adjustment features. Does not load third party LUTs.
EDIT: If I should choose only one I would take ColorFinale. After spending a great deal of time lately with all the above plugins I think in the feature I´ll try and make my own style of "looks" and for that purpose ColorFinale is a better tool.
