I haven't seen La Soufriere, but I will definitely watch it! Thanks for the kind comment. Herzog is amazing!

Sure, I'll be honest. Due to being inundated with other projects, this doc was always being queued last to edit (which is why it took a year to release). We unfortunately didn't get picture lock until two days before the release. So during those two days I did colour and sound. It wasn't much time and I am not totally happy with the results. That aside, what I did to save time was that I would pick one shot from each day and match each camera to it. I then would use that preset to start grading the other clips. It worked out fairly well, but we weren't diligent enough about colour balance throughout the shoot.
As for sound, we had a ton of wind issues throughout the shoot. I am not sure how much more you can prevent this when you are run and gun. I would LOVE to have a sound person on the shoot. That would have made things so much better. Also, for the next time I would definitely hire a colourist and a sound mixer.
We just found out that we got into one of the film festivals that we applied for so I will definitely revisit sound and colour now.
It was really difficult when we found out the dates changed. At the time we felt satisfied with the footage that we got from the beginning of the ceremony. At the time we felt that maybe we would go down the road of not mentioning that the dates had changed. I mean, it was the ceremony. We would just miss the final parts which are apparently similar to what we filmed. Ultimately in the end we felt that this resulted in a better ending and definitely a more truthful ending. Also, it was really important for us to show the viewer that the 9-5 day doesn't exist in a lot of the world. These people are used to things changing like that. They don't care about clocks

I had the 501 and went to the smallHD Focus. The resolution is better on the 501, but other than that, for what I do the focus is much better. Quicker to operate and much easier to see in daylight.

This is the first documentary that I have done. It was shot on Sony A7sii, Panasonic GH5, Sony Rx100m4 and a Phantom 4 pro. Would love to hear your thoughts! Editing a 30 minute piece is soooo much work. I applaud people who work in this format every day!

It seems that SmallHD have discontinued this model, probably to have a new one with the touch screen interface.
It is a good price for what it is (and it isn't the SDI version, just HDMI In and Out), when I bought the Focus, that was almost 300euros more, so no comparison. I haven't use this one though, so I can't really tell about the differences.
Spec wise, the 501 is 1080 vs 720 for the focus, pixel density 441 vs 294 (PPI) but the Focus is 800nits vs 400, and it is almost half the weight (both pretty big deal, and 720 on 5" is pretty good, alright).

I have used the 502 and loved it. Great monitor, very clear image on the right conditions.
With strong sunlight, even with the hood, it's difficult to see. On those occasions, you can turn it into an EVF but I didn't like the loupe.
I'm curious to use the focus, but in general, i really like the 502 (same as 501 but with sdi).

Hell yeah it's a deal. If you have a GH5 you need to get it, with the pan/tilt mount.

So far I haven't used it for an actual storyboard. I've mostly been playing around with different focal lengths and character blocking.

I'm going to give it a try. But just curious how easy it is to make your shot list. Can you guys share some screenshots of what you have drafted so far?

    BLOCKER by Afternow
A new way to previs with your phone. You can program which camera you'll be using, and different focal lengths. Drop in characters, adjust their height, and sun/light placement. Then figure out blocking. It has a few funky bugs but it's freakin amazing for a free app.

Welllllll..... most kiwis don't necessarily think I have a kiwi accent! Even though I was born in NZ and have lived here my entire life (same for both my parents as well! Both kiwis).

I've done a fair few videos on other topics about sound, or is there something specific you want?

To go step by step through everything in my mixing bag on a typical film shoot? Not sure if I have done that, probably should. Especially now I have the Orca OR30 bag, which makes it much much easier to show to the camera what is in it.

I have been meaning to do soon a video showing how different it is now between what my bag looks like set up in the Zoom's F4 specific bag vs in my new Orca bag.

Thanks! You almost need subtitles for those of us not used to the kiwi accent
I was hoping you would have gone into how you setup your rig with these stuff in your videos.

Opinions will of course vary a lot on this point (just like everything else before as well!), but in my personal view the Ultrasync ONE offers the best possible mix of size/features/cost.

However having a Tentacle or two for DSLR shoots are nice with their built in scratch mic.

You might also look around for secondhand original Tentacles, as you'd just be losing out mainly on bluetooth and the "locking" ish connection.

A pair of good quality 1x1 led panels from Aputure with 95+CRI to bring the inside lighting up by a few stops.  Fire one up at the ceiling and use the other to simulate the feeling that there's light coming from a window out of shot.  With $900 invested in a pair of LS-1 panels you'll be laughing.

    Happy Birthday!

It certainly is a very very common camera. Had a couple of days shooting with it last week in my office building.

Yeah me 2. It is a shame as the images are really nice, but for a portable camera autofocus would be nice to have for quick run and gun type work. I am waiting on canon as I know only they can get it right from both an ergonomics and image standpoint. I think we just have to pray the ff mirrorless will give us what we have been asking for.

Had a go of one today.
They have badly messed up the ergonomics for video.
The silent control panel is a joke... Touch screen items are way too small to accurately select and the scrolling is unresponsive.
The exposure comp. button is programmable but you can't assign movie recording to it... there is also no movie record button whatsoever!
Strangely you can assign slow-mo frame rate options to the button, and select them any time you want... even in stills mode. But you can't shoot.
The movie mode is on the end of the drive selection lever again like X-T2 and it sucks balls. Finger nail grasping, clicking, takes ages... just horrible. Have to go through about 6 clicks to reach the movie mode.
Autofocus was poor. Didn't try all lenses though.
On the bright side... The stabilisation seemed REALLY effective.

Well, you can focus better, you have better exposure tools, you notice small mistakes better and you have better Codecs like prores. Which will make your life more easier. I use a blackmagic video assist 4K atm (sold my atomos samurai blade for it)
