I'm often in the same situation. But, what I've found is that, exactly, GH5 with full open Voigtlanders at ISO 1600 gathered more light than exists for  the human eye - and, the most important, because of m43 DOF, f1.0 in fact don't result in THAT shallow DOF (it is near f2 at full frame measure). In fact, it seems to me that non m43 users don't realise how good and usefully advanced are pro m43 primes wide open in lowlight situations.
To sum up: having fully clean Iso 3200-6400 image from GH5s is dream come true - but not something that in the 95% of real life situation couldn't be achieved by fast primes. But, lacking of Ibis is for me hardly compensable for far more situations.
Keep in  mind that situations when we need to up ISO level to the 12800, even 6400, are in reality such that their color informations are extremely poor.

Never say never... BM Resolve is now free. Pocket is 4 years old. If some sort of Pocket II (or Ursa Micro) come out soon as their logical step in (hail to God) independent no-Japanese production line - Panasonic will surely react the first. Imho, road map for shaking news of GH6 is prepared: return of ibis for sure, lowlight is already spot - what rest is the first implementation and (for the first time modest) offering of raw. One is sure: GH5s is just anticipation (for gas addict and impatience ones ) for GH6.

For the most precious population of serious GH users (documentary and first-time, stepping the game indie art-shooters ), GH5 is in fact first major step above hacked GH2 - because of IBIS and enough advanced color science (very plastic or deeply sculpting color possibilities). Next major step for that population has to be just one: RAWs - i. e. to finally integrate BMPCC (BMCC) and Canon ML into functionally extremely+ competent Panasonic body... Everything between (incremental software games with rollofs, lowlight, slow motions, even impossible inclusion of ND etc.) are postponement (and sucking GAS-money ) intermediate steps. Anybody who once upon a time shoot and fall in love with early BM (or Canon ML) cameras wait for the first brand who will give also functionally completed experience - most probably it will be Panasonic.

Agree completely. Just such sort of improvements for me could make formula GH5s > GH5 = 1000e (grey market price) acceptable. Anything else is +/- seductive gimmick and GAS dron attack...

To me is GH5 the most capable camera to very extreme conditions. I have just spent 10 days in peruvian amazon rainforest and the humidity and muddy conditions were hard. I shot V-log 10bit 24p and the results seems to me very good (filmic :-D) as you can see on this very short trailer to movie about expedition to Matses tribe:

AF is not that bad at all though I don't use it....I did however play with it to see...the real problem IMO is people want to bypass the skills to operate a camera this complex and essentially want a feature loaded GH5 that acts like a point and shoot....the gimbal issue comes up a lot...the sollution, unless you're Martin Scorsese, making Goodfellas, shoot shorter takes and employ some of the skills steadycam operators have used for years...like locking focus in manual mode, and then maintaining a constant distance from the sublject....or using a lens in the case where this is impossible with a short infinity distance and shooting away...for those complaining about GH5 AF on gimbals, I suggest viewing some steadycam reels on Vimeo or YouTube....and try to imagine the obstacle course the operators are navigating to achieve their incredible results....without AF and a camera setup that weighs between 25 and 45 lbs...in other words, stop blaming the camera and developer your own skills....for run and gun, either learn to focus manually or put up with what it can do, which is not as bad as reported...with AF the skill lies in where you can use it with this camera and where not.

I missed that argument... but now I'm convinced
Seriously, I've found two emulations of X-t2 very pleasant, but comparing to 10bit HLG form GH5 they are, so to say, "thinner" - at the same way that base GH5 image is thinner than Canon C100 II and ML Raw.
About ergonomy, base of only one day of my using Fuji X-t2 - I think that someone have to REALLY love Fuji to appreciate it over, say, GH5: with GH5 all of necessary settings and operation I have in 5 joystick FNs commands - which is at the moment, from my point of view, simply unbeatable. Grip of GH5 leave something to be desired, but X-t2 is, in the comparison, near non-existent.

Good old video sample review from one of the indie genius Seb Farges
So I'm holding 17.5mm at the moment
infinity to 1m is about 1-1.5cm of focus ring throw, so it's easy to quickly focus within that distance. From 1m and closer, the focus throw becomes progressively loooonger... until you forget that once upon a time you started to rotate it,... giving you the ability to make very fine adjustments down to about 1.5cm from end of lens.
Smoothness and dump-quality is second to none in m43 and aps-c world, on pair - or a tine bit stiffer - with (original) leicas, little bit better than zeisses.

This looks great and your demo footage is beautiful. I would be sending you my money right now but it's WAAAAAYYY too expensive for a lut.
I think many of us have been burned before with Luts promising to transform this, or fix this, or make our lives easier, and the truth is I've never found any of them to completely live up to their promise, so it's hard to splurge this much money. If it were 50% cheaper I would try it out and reward you for what has obviously been a lot of work, but this is just too much right now without any way to test it myself on any footage.
If there were more demonstrations on other people's footage in a variety of different circumstances then I might be persuaded.
Your results do look fantastic though.

Thank you Jonesy Jones, I really appreciate that.
I will take it into consideration. Just one light source conversion may still be used on other light sources to good effect. It is likely that it won't earn back what it cost to make, but it is something that I personally really wanted and was passionate about having (I was seriously considering used Alexas last December). Also, the research and development put into this may prove vital in my next, more costly, effort.
Currently available color solutions (FilmC) are far from accurate, and are best described as 'looks'. This is something different, and I intend to raise the standard for *conversions specifically (color transformations that should make one format look exactly like another)

If 2x anamorph, then Luk filmed in the known Lumix 4 to 3 mode with 3328 x 2496px, the same  like the  GH4 and G7 4to3 video modes.
Luks screegrab would then be 50% downsized in each width and height. The   2x anamorph image was then 6656 x 2496 pixels large and original captured image was 3328x2496 px, giving us a 4to3 ratio, the same as on the GH4 and G7 4to3 mode for anamorphic shooting.
If we keep the sensor heigth with a pixel count of 2496 and expand width for 16 to 9 ratio, it would give us a sensor with about 4438 x 2496 pixels.
So it could be a sensor with 4438 x 2496 pixels in 16:9 ratio, my bet in S35 size.

You are welcome, pleasure is mine. Your vampire shorts are on a trait for lovely-freely homo-ludens and schizo fireworks - so please, keep going on.
Of course it was compliment. In your last sample, colors are not at all - at least for me - great, balanced, accurate, neither thought-out or minimalistic: for me at least they are, simply, retro trash and tend to follow short's bizare atmosphere of psychodelia.
But eoshd looks sometimes to me as really funny place of an especial sort of sanatorium: for curing ours childish wish to act as big conneseurs, competent and important judges, and participant in game You-Milk-Me-I-Milk-You as aspiring cameraman role.
Saying that, once more I vote for Jon's buying Atlas lens(as) and for Mercer's (Glen?) buying another hundred of lenses (for planting them around his countryside so becoming mythical place of great obsession). Lets our West-East moderator guru bravely steps in front of bankrupcy and be feeded in hungriness by his Vietnamese Dulcineas!
    Why?
Because from West side one so-so wise man, S. J, said as ultimative advice: Stay hungry, stay foolish.
And from East side, one wise man, A.T, said: Let someone shout that pyramids should be built! Even if we do not build them, it is important to nourish the great dream!
You see how boring and funny-in-fiasco-attempt  pathetic I am? So please, laugh at me... and shoot more polaroid extravaganza pretending to expect appraisal as they are great color achievements!

Oh, I'll be impressed only if Jon secretly, and without any announce in advance, adopt some of your vampire content inclination, and as result, in next test shot, we suddenly see Vietnamese beauties in the same zombie state (and, of course, by night - I really don't remember any Jon's night shot). And me personally will be full of  delight if this content deliberation would be made with assistance of Atlas anamorphic lenses. THAT will be wow positive influence - or, so to say, vampiresque blood mutation - of this marvelous site!
(And if Mercer post the same attempt with row sound of his canon... but about that dream I must only make a whispering... he is sometimes so serious - but, seriously, I'd also like if GH5 has resulting image of canon ML raw seductiveness.
BTW I'm origine of Hopy Indians - and, Panny, as you know, our time is not as other's - so probably and mine so-called smartness in some reverence mind. But one day I'll certainly shot movie about that deep reflective topic, and being - as you are shure - so deeply impressed with your last polaroid thanks so sincerely and frankly adressed to me - I think I'll choose some other color style.

anonim reacted to mercer in Canon 5d3 with Magic Lantern vs Canon 5d4?
To add, I’m sure someone will post for you to buy a GH5 and a Metabones speed booster for your Canon glass. And that is an option.
But since you asked about the 5D4, I will say that there is a 4K crop and it is somewhere between 1.64 and 1.74 depending upon what site you read. This crop puts you just on the edge of the Super 35mm format but you may require wider lenses. Some aps-c Canon lenses will work if the shield is removed. Other lenses like the Sigma 18-35mm will work with no vignette... so some lens options open up.
With the 3.5k ML Raw, the crop is similar to get constant recording... so that aspect is a wash.
The problem with the C-Log on the 5D4 is that it is Canon installed, which means there is a chance that if the Magic Lantern team ever cracks the 5D4 for effortless 4K and plus Raw, it may not work with models that have C-Log.
Good news is Canon Log is a great Log profile that really expands the dynamic range in an easy to grade Log profile. So if you’re only worried about today and not a hypothetical Magic Lantern 5D4, then Canon Log is a great profile.
File sizes will be large with either choice so expect to buy some cards and hard drives. Good news is that CF cards aren’t horribly expensive and hard drives are cheap.
Now with ML Raw you get a lot of other benefits like focus peaking and exposure tools. Although with the 5D4 and its DPAF you won’t need focus peaking.
So I would say that you need to decide how much you need 4K? If you can get by with a majority of 1080p Raw and then some 3.5K for specific projects, then the 5D3 may be enough for you. But if you need 4K for everything, then the 5D4, 1DC, or if you can stretch it, a C200 may be your best bets.
And I guess I’d be remiss not to mention the GH5 as an option. For the money... maybe even twice the money... it is an amazing camera.
    Good Luck.

It’s my understanding that the 3.5K  Raw from the 5D3 isn’t a hundred percent refined yet, so for paid interviews it may not be your best bet, but I would have no problem using the 1080p Raw for paid gigs.
I’m in the middle of shooting a short film in 1080p ML Raw and I couldn’t be happier. I’d take it over any consumer 4K any day of the week.
With that being said, I am one of the few fans of the 5D4’s 4K on this site... I think it looks absolutely stunning and the Touch AF seems magical.
But unless I had a client that asked for 4K, I would just shoot 1080p ML Raw. But since I am a hobbyist that shoots zero budget films... well working on my first zero budget film, I don’t have clients to answer to.
Another thought would be a 1DC. In my opinion it is the best 4K image out there. The 5D4 is similar with the great AF, but the 1DC has that unquantifiable “mojo” I hear people talk about. But so does ML Raw.
Hope that helps, but after rereading it... it may not have...

@jonpais I guess it depends how important AF is to any particular indie filmmaker.
I just think it’s a folly to go back and forth about which company cares about their customers more... when they all care about deep their pockets are.
I think all filmmakers need to decide what features are important to them and then make a decision based on that.
For me, 4K is st the bottom of the list, so 10bit 4K doesn’t even register on my radar. It’s a cool feature but it won’t make or break any film I ever make... at least anytime soon. I do like the IBIS and 10bit all-i 1080p and in future camera purchases, I will probably want DPAF because that is a feature that will help my level of productions. But I don’t think Canon developed it because they really care if I can track focus and then tap the screen to rack focus.
So no Canon doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside as a company but I appreciate the effort that went into that specific feature.

To start to cater for others in order to grow your channel would kinda be like betraying your own believes and interests, so I'd say: just stay true to yourself, then you'll enjoy it the most.
