I disagree that the discussion should stop there. Once you buy 2 or 3 lenses and a variable ND the price of the GX85 is getting close to the XC10. Undoubtedly there are key differences like codec, sensor size, fixed lens or not, but for some they are legitimate competitors. Both are offering stabilised 4k and 50p HD in a small form factor. In my case the GX85 has unlimited recording times and doesn't overheat. The way I see it is that with the GX85 I'm dipping my toe into the m4/3 world to see how it compares to Canon. I prefer the Canon image but for the work I'm doing going light weight is a real bonus. Low light is very important for me and to compare the 2 is invaluable. I don't expect them to have the same capabilities as my C100 but they both interest me greatly.

The C100 is a fantastic camera with a great image but lugging it about with a set of lenses and batteries for a live event is tiring.
I use wdr  as it suits my needs. I haven't used Clog as it hasn't been necessary. I used to have a G30 (I think it was a G30!) as well as a 700D but they just don't work cutting with a C100. The XC10 appeals as it should cut a whole lot better with the C100 but I worry about low light and DOF.
To see a few tests of how the GX85 and the XC10 compare would be most interesting. Testing colours, IBIS and iso limits would be very interesting for me and many others in the same boat. Both in HD and 4k. What are the limits for both cameras.
    Thanks!

But it seems with Panasonic's newly tweaked color science, and a simple dose of FilmConvert, the GX85 is a very capable camera.
I have to make some equipment decisions within the next week or two, so I am planning on taking out the XC10 and the GX85 one day next week and do some side by sides. If there is anything specific you would like me to test, then let me know.
I  tend to underexpose my footage by about a stop as I have found for my lack of color skills, I get better results. Btw, how do you expose C-Log?
Also, I'm not sure if you would consider a traditional small sensor camcorder, but the Canon HF-G40 is a neat little beast with a 1.8 lens, Wide DR picture profile, focus peaking, zebras, 5-Axis IS. I would imagine it could be a great B-cam to a C100 if you shoot Wide DR.

    Even low light?
I mean the XC10 at f2.8 out performs the GX85 at f1.7 in lowlight?

@Thpriest Hey mate I havent pushed the ISO past 1600, haven't needed to yet, I mostly shoot with the Metabones Speedbooster XL .64 and Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and that combo often keeps me at ISO 1600 or lower, 3200 rarely. Despite this, I occasionally have issues maintaining accurate exposure and colour with the G7 too, however I'm a pretty inexperienced videographer.
To light the dance floor and cake cutting I used a small Metz Mecalight 320 on a light stand, the G7 also falls apart if pushed past ISO 1600 in low light scenes like this. Definitely rather have a speedbooster and portable lighting solution than push this cam to ISO 3200.

Cheers for the feedback mate ?

    Very nice video.
I have been experimenting with the GX85 for weddings. I usually use a canon C100 which is fantastic but heavy! My problem with the Panasonic is that it falls apart quickly after 1600 ( I have Panasonic 1.7 lenses) and it is sometimes hard to maintain exposure and colours from shot to shot.
I saw that you low light stuff looked pretty good with the G7 but did you use extra lighting in the dance and when they cut the cake?

Yup, I'd go in debt for that camera. They won't do it though. I mean, I have to assume that we aren't the first people to think about this, someone at Canon must've mentioned it... Hell... Renaissance mentioned something similar right when the XC10 was released. I would think a quarter of micro budget/indie filmmakers would own this combo.

This is where Canon could find a real winner. A simple but ergonomic form factor like the XC10 but with interchangeable lenses, built in NDs, IBIS and the Canon look and ease of use.

Very true. The only issue I have with the camera is for narratives, I really need a complimentary camera for that shallow depth... I just cannot afford a C100 for the spec shorts I work on. If only Canon would release a C1... A one inch sensor camera with interchangeable lenses. The BMPCC has proven you can obtain a shallow depth with a small sensor and fast lens combo. 1080 (and maybe the 220mbps 4K) and Canon LOG with the eos-m mount for around 2 grand and I'd hand over my money.

The XC10's ISO performance - especially in HD mode - is very good for a 1" sensor. Compared to a GH4 in 4K (not too big a size difference: 2.9x vs 2.4x crop) it is noticeably better.
The thing is that it's pointless making such comparisons as the XC10 has a fixed lens with an aperture that gets slow at standard and long focal lengths. So although you can do noise comparisons at equal ISO's, the interchangeable lens cameras are always going to do better with half-fast glass (let alone a speed booster). As I said before I find myself ramping the ISO right up in only moderately dim situations unless it's a wide shot. Although noise performance is good at high ISO's, the situations in which you have to ramp it up are way more frequent.
It's a fantastic camera - I really love it for it's ergonomics, ease of use (with a few niggles that I've found perfectly good workarounds for), unsurpassed shot-grabbing ability, incredible stabilization and beautiful image quality. But there's no doubt it's put to best use in decent light. However it's basically an evolution of a classic camcorder and compared to most of those it does superbly in low light.
Again it's a fantastic companion for the C100. The compliment each other very well. The C100's strengths are low light and shallow depth of field (where 4K is less important). The XC10 is great for deep, detailed DoF (4K), timelapse and as a small, inconspicuous all-in-one shot grabber (incredible IS and well implemented automatic modes). If you want both in one camera you pay a hefty price (money, size and weight) for a C300MkII.

It is definitely a very interesting little cam, maybe a bit too early. How much ISO does it really stand, and can anyone compare the ISO capabilities with any other dSLR or S35 camera?

Forum members, I just thought I'd point out that this guy is the founder of a questionable Polish militia "boot camp" facility which trains French civilians to semi/automatic firearms & combat warfare (which is illegal here) around a clouded political agenda that seems to cover up under anti-terrorist legitimacy. He is here asking questions as no French videographers (to whom he referred to me in another thread in french as "hipster faggots") seem to want to be associated with his borderline propaganda activities . I'm all about freedom of speech, but I just thought you guys should know who you're helping out here.. not exactly your ordinary fellow videographer..
As for the A7S2, it's color science & S-log. I often here it berated here and it isn't the easiest cam to work with and S-log does require advanced grading skills .. but in the right hands I've seen some really superb work done on the S2 and it sure packs a lot of punch in such a small package (and price compared to the FS5).. and this is coming from a Canon guy!

Thpriest reacted to Simon Shasha in Micro + IKAN = An Awesome & Affordable EVF
    Hey guys,
I wanted to share with you an awesome and affordable monitor made by IKAN that can, with a tiny bit of work, be used as an EVF.
The main reason I wanted an EVF + loupe for my Micro setup was to create a fourth-point of contact between my Micro and my body.
With my right-hand on the ENG grip, left-hand on the len's focus-ring, chest-pad against my right-shoulder, having the IKAN + loupe pressed up against my right-eye added that extra piece of stability I have been looking for - not to mention being able to monitor and pull focus perfectly in bright daylight.
For those interested, the monitor is called the IKAN VL35 and can be had for as little as $259USD: http://ikancorp.com/productdetail.php?id=1738
I rigged it together with an old ViewFinder that I used to use with my A7S and A7RII. Having sold those cameras, I decided to use it as a loupe for my IKAN VL35.
It doesn't fit the VL35 perfectly (as it is designed for 3" monitors, and the VL35 is a 3.5" monitor), but it will do for now.
However, the good news is IKAN recently told me that they will be releasing a loupe specifically designed for the VL35 - and given the affordability of the monitor itself, I'm sure the loupe will be priced very nicely.
As for the quality of the monitor itself - all I can say is that it's great Very similar to the monitor on the BMPCC.
I haven't conducted any scientific or methodical tests yet, such as running down the battery or precisely measuring colour and luminosity, but I have used it plenty in the real-world, and it has functioned flawlessly and beautifully. Highly recommended for those looking for a setup like this
Anyway, here are some pictures for those that are interested

My XC10 with my C100MkII top handle (pretending to be) attached. In reality it'd be more flush and low profile as I've had to add an additional hotshoe to put it in place. I imagine Canon will go for something smaller but using the same unit doesn't seem outside the realms of possibility. Considering the XC10 compliments the C100 so well it'd make some sense. A unit like Sony's for the A7 cameras would be much more compact but wouldn't integrate a handle..
I made my own top handle for my XC10 - using a Smallrig hotshoe handle and Beachtek MMC-2 - which works great as an audio unit. No XLR but with a radio mic and VMP it offers v good sound, audio controls and the top handle works great with the 5-axis for stadicam like shots. Also it can be added, detached quickly just like the C100:

I think the are quite different. I have a GX85 and I used to have a 7D and a 700D(T5i). The colours and the look of the Canons is something I like a lot. They tend to look good without having to mess around in the edit suite. The GX85 doesn't have that look but it does have 4k which looks pretty good on a 1080 timeline. The 1080 has 50p which is great for have a bit of flexibility with slomo. The stabiliser is fantastic but the sound is awful. The m4/3 lenses are so lightweight! Canon lenses seem so heavy now! I think you would need a fast lens with the GX85. The Gx85 is also tiny which can be good and bad. I couldn't imagine rigging one up like people do to the Canons!

I mean, I guess you could put a fast lens on the gx85 and it will help. I just shot a micro short the other day on the XC10 and I shot wide dr up to 1600 and it was clean. At 3200 I noticed a little noise creeping in but nothing I couldn't work with if I had to. I would still in most instances try to keep everything at 1600 or below.

Likes: Colours, menus and ease of use. On the C100 I love the ergonomics, especially the hand grip and joystick. The quality of image on those little files is amazing.
Dislikes: Doing stupid things like the crap viewfinder and LCD on the C100. PSF nonsense, 50i. Mts boredom.
