  1. I'm aware of that yet in sunlight the R5 beat the A7S3. Also at least that "BS lineskipped 1080p looking 4k" doesn't brick the camera, whereas A7S3 seemingly failed in 4K24p under 23mn. Let me be clear, neither situation is good. If you shoot outdoors in the summer or live in hot climate it's basically a no go. All I'm saying is Sony deserves the same amount of scrutiny that Canon endured in the last few weeks.
  2. So the Canons have overheat issues and get bashed to death, memes and all.. but the new Sony, who in a clear comparison test shuts down completely under 23 minutes and before the R5 sitting next to it.. and it gets a free pass? Kinda sounds like double standards.
  3. He's got a therm gun a timer and clearly shows the A7S3 shutting down after 23mn, while the R5 is still going a bit longer and the S1H running much cooler than both as expected. Again, he also specifies that indoors with AC, the A7S3 runs much longer than R5 (1H30 vs 25mn). So clearly depending on temp conditions, overheating results may vary. Further tests by other sources are welcome I agree but overheating on A7S3 remains an evident reality.
  4. I don't shoot outdoors that much, especially not in hot weather.. so I'll take the A7S3's indoor 1h30mn over the R5's 25-30mn 4K HQ. if you're a wedding/outdoor shooter in warmer zones, it looks like neither would be a good solution over an S1H or active cooled cine cam. It isn't clear if the non high frame rate 4K24p/30p on A7S3 overheats at all or not.
  5. First R5 vs A7S3 comparison.. As far as overheat, the R5 actually BEATS the A7S3 in exterior Florida heat test in 4K60p. A7S3 shut down in 23mn! Indoors however, A7S3 had a clear lead it seems. Overall A7S3 seems like the more flexible video tool in all areas, but overheating remains a reality and this real world test seems to show worst performance on the Sony in hot weather.
  6. I don’t see anyone talking about the very low expected rolling shutter. We got a preview of it from that German Vlog (I’m now 99% sure it was shot on A7S3). That’s another really strong edge for this camera IMO opening up all kinds of action shots and fast camera movements. Pretty excited to find out more about that.
  7. Nice! Really smart of Sony to include so many codec options.
  8. Hmmm so A7S3 has a h264 10-bit codec option making it an easier to edit 10-bit solution than Canons? That would certainly give an extra point advantage to Sony..
  9. So lemme get this straight, these new cameras (1DX3, R5/R6 & A7S3) are using 10-bit codecs no current computer/gfx card can decode/edit?! wtf
  10. screw paying an extra $4K to record 16-bit RAW files. Just give us ProRes RAW to a Ninja V for efficient low-end RAW capture.
  11. I don't do much editing but my editors have no problems with my FS7's high bitrate 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC-I footage. I don't think they transcode either and most are on 15" MBPs. By the way, FS7/FX9 still have really neat exclusive features (aside from all the I/Os, NDs etc) such as the Cine-EI modes & custom LUT support. A7S3 is certainly looking to be a great B-cam for them. A7S2 & A73 weren't so great in that regard. I wonder what weather sealing is looking like though.
  12. B&H video is basically one big Sony commercial. Salesman in the video would literally have you sign a mortgage if he could. Zero critical thinking. We’ll have to wait for more independent sources to know it’s potential flaws, especially real world overheating limits. But anyways, video confirms all the rumors and puts an end to speculation. We finally have a Sony Alpha camera with 10-bit ALL-I codecs & 4K HFR. Enhanced AF. Touch AF. New menus. About time. Still I can’t help but not feel too much excitement. Maybe I’m just being conservative because after a 6 month Canon hype train we were met with utter disappointment. Or maybe it’s because it feels Sony is playing catch-up. I mean Panasonic, Fuji & now Canon all offer 10-bit & 4K60p. And with at least twice or more MP for stills. Just doesn’t feel so special. Of course there is a lot to like here as well, but after a 4 year wait and for a whopping 4200€.. I guess I was really hoping my expectations would be exceeded.. but instead they were just met. All that said, if indeed the thermal balance is double that of Canon and there are no nasty surprises, I will most likely pull the trigger.
  13. That article is way too detailed to be fake, besides we are technically July 28th in Europe. Of course the limits are thermal, with unchanged A7 gen4 body and passive cooling they're not going to achieve miracles.
  14. Well now that we know A7S3 will have thermal cutoffs, we need to focus on what we learned from the R5/R6 debacle. Meaning how long and under what temp condition does 4K60p/K120p reach overheat? What are the recovery times? Will 4K24p always be available? Will 10-bit 4K24p cause heating up? Regardless, it looks like 1DX3 & S1H are still the only FF hybrids with internal 10-bit that don't overheat.. disappointing. I still don't know what new camera to choose lol.
  15. So A7S3 specs have leaked and plot twist: it will also overheat and has a thermal cutoff.. " One focus of the camera is video recording. Unlike Canon with the EOS R5, Sony does not use 8K for video, but continues to use 4K, which is said to achieve the best results so far with an alpha camera. The sensor’s 12 MP resolution enables a full-pixel readout without pixel binning and without crop up to 4K / 60p. In this setting, the recording limit should be one hour without overheating – the EOS R5 only manages 30 minutes at 4K / 60p. The video recording of the Alpha 7S III in 4K / 120p mode is limited to this length – by the way, a slight crop is used (1.1x).S " i.e. A7S3 FF no crop 4K60p is rated at 60mn & 4K120p = 30mn Better on paper than R5 but how will it play out in real world situations? hopefully we get an answer tomorrow with the hands-on.
  16. The article is way too detailed and sheds a lot of new info not rumoured anywhere such as the new XAVC-SI & HS codecs, 16-bit ProRes RAW via HDMI 2.1, new AF system.. and thermal cutoff times. So what is there to gather? A7S3 WILL OVERHEAT. Just less than R5. 4K60p FF no crop = 1 hour 4K120p crop = 30mn Now let’s wait and see how that translates into real world use. Battle ain’t over IMO.
  17. never heard of that codec. more details please.
  18. Slim to none. Sony ain't Fuji.
  19. Finally! Proxy settings too 👀
  20. The absence of the Sony logo on the LCD threw me off as well but you’re right Nokishita is as reliable as it gets when it comes to leaks/rumors.. The design is definitely uninspired. The Sony exec claiming just a few weeks ago “ Everything is new” and “exceeding expectations” was clearly trolling. I would’ve really liked one new killer design feature like a E-ND or something. oh well, after the Canon fiasco, I guess anything 10-bit that doesn’t overheat is game on.
  21. That’s what I’m saying, RS appears pretty darn good. Btw, those leaked “official” pics appears to be fake.
  22. You don't necessarily need ARRI/RED to achieve those objectives. Any camera that shoots RAW, ProRes, 10-bit 4:2:2 ALL-I Log should easily get you there. FWIW Netflix capture requirements: Capture Format RAW (X-OCN, REDCODE, Arriraw etc.) COMPRESSED (XAVC, AVC-Intra, ProRes, or other I-Frame capable formats) Minimum of 16-bit Linear or 10-bit Log processing Minimum data-rate of Bitrate of 240 Mbps at 23.98 fps
  23. ^ Yeah with the current situation I would never use an R5 on such a project. Again total deal breaker.
  24. So basically you're saying it's ok for Panasonic users to bash Canon in this thread, however you're not ok with actual Canon users being disappointed by these recent developments and hope for a fix? That to me is ludicrous. You're also completely twisting my words, letting your own bias cloud your judgement. Total fanboy reaction. I'm the first to admit that the latest findings by Gerald Undone is a total deal breaker for me, and I'm sure many others. I was sort of ok with the initial Canon R5 overheat chart, however absolutely NOT with the camera locking 8K/HQ modes after 1 hour of stills or just regular standby. All I'm saying is that IF this carries through to production units OR Canon somehow doesn't fix that behaviour, there is going to be a massive uproar. I will be the first not to support this camera. Mark my words. I'm also well aware of the A7S3 release tomorrow, and as I'm also a Sony/FS7 owner and will be closely monitoring what that camera offers and it's potential caveats (which I hope don't include any overheating).
