  1. 1DX2 won’t overheat but you’re dealing with a DSLR brick, crop factor, 8-bit recording and the terribly inefficient MJPEG codec will fill up your card faster than the R5/R6 reaches overheat limit!
  2. My last Fuji was an XT2 and it would overheat pretty quickly during exterior summer shoots. I'd assume it only got worst with H265 10-bit..
  3. I was under the impression the quad-bayer sensor could give you best of both worlds (I.e. 48MP for stills, 12MP for video)? I will probably still purchase the A7S3 no matter what as I need a B-cam to my FS7 but I still maintain Sony is going to have to knock it out of the ballpark on the video specs front if it is going with 12MP.
  4. @wolf33d wow never thought I'd see the day were you'd be advocating for Canon! looks like they really are shaking things up when die-hard Sony users are thinking about switching systems! jokes aside, let's wait & see what A7S3 brings to the table. I don't really trust SAR rumours. they've been wrong so many times. if Sony does forgive the quad-bayer sensor and comes out with another 12MP camera, it's certainly going to be divisive for hybrid shooters and dare I say will remain a niche camera. That's half the MP of an A7III so I don't see many hybrid Sony users "downgrading" to a 12MP camera for stills in 2020. For video though, I guess that could mean another low-light champ, good DR and super fast readout times = low RS. I still feel that's not going to be enough to really win the battle, even if they finally include 10-bit.. especially after a 4 year follow-up.
  5. ..or just shoot normal 4K for your long recordings and sprinkle 8K/4K60p/4K120p when available/necessary. those modes will eat up storage space anyways so not great for long recordings. that is how I shot with 5D3 + ML RAW or even on EOS R (FHD+ FHD HQ / 4K). according to a R5 tester on YT, the camera never fully shuts down during overheat and still allows normal 4K shooting:
  6. That’s excellent news. Glad to hear the camera will never be in a fully shutdown state due to overheating (like older gen Sony’s or Fuji’s) and will continue to allow normal 4K recording. Thats pretty reassuring. You should never be left on standby on set contrary to what has been speculated.
  7. The overheat info is detailed on the official Japanese R6 page.
  8. Only up to 4K30p.. 4K60p has a S35 crop and drops to 10-bit 4:2:0 LongGOP. Obviously no 8K or 4K120p FF. No DPAF or internal RAW either. And that's with a fan and body almost twice the weight.
  9. @ade towell There are two ways of looking at this, glass half-empty or half-full. Andrew made a good post about this: https://www.eoshd.com/8k/a-closer-look-at-the-canon-eos-r5-lower-quality-4k-mode-to-avoid-thermal-cut-off/ R5/R6 can be used without overheating issues. If you want maximum performance (which no other hybrid camera can currently give you) well you are prone to thermal cut off limits and high RS. I think it's a fair trade-off situation and Canon are being open about it as opposed to Sony. Concerning the R6 4K crop, it is of x1.07. It apparently takes a 4K DCI image and truncates it to UHD. No biggie. As for the S1H being a better hybrid video camera, that is subjective. The poor AF and weight (1Kg vs 680g) makes it a no go for me personally and if you want FF no crop 4K60p in 10-bit.. only R5/R6 will give you that. But of course YMMV.
  10. Perhaps 4K30p is supersampled and 24/25p pixel binned?
  11. R6 will overheat in 4K60p after 30-40mn & in 4K30p after 40-50mn (depending on FF/S35 modes). Shouldn't be any overheating issues in 4K24p/25p. Let's just remember we're talking FF no crop oversampled 4K60p with DPAF in 10-bit 4:2:2 internal. In comparison, the only hybrid camera on the market that can get close to that is the almost twice more expensive S1H which can only do 4K60p with a S35 crop in 10-bit 4:2:0 longGOP and poor contrast AF... and that camera has active cooling on board!
  12. It does all that and then some. Pixel shift has new options allowing bokeh defocussing etc
  13. On R6 4K60p will overheat (30-35mn) as well as 4K30p (40-50mn) which I personally find are decent recording times for those particular modes. I never do long shots on high frame rate modes and if you’re doing long interviews, concerts or weddings you should have a second body or cine cam anyways. Otherwise just stick to 4K24p/25p for those long recordings and don’t worry about overheating issues. I think the whole overheating topic is overblown but of course let’s wait for some real life testing to find out more info about it.
  14. The R5 will only overheat in 8K, 4K60p & 4K HQ. It shouldn't have any problems in regular 4K24p/30p. Calling it unusable is a little extreme. What other hybrid camera can even approach these specs? 8K/4K120p FF no crop, DPAF2, RAW, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal. Besides we've had 30mn recording limits for years due to EU laws. Hardly an issue for me personally.. That said, if Sony can do better, bring it on!
  15. The 4K HQ mode that supersamples from 8K will probably be the sweet spot for most people. Not surprised the 8K overheats. It’s a giant feat with no active cooling. Would be nice to get some RS/DR/ISO info but it looks like Canon isn’t letting youtubers show footage from their pre-production units (except for Peter McKinnon). Also curious about the lowlight performance differences between R5 & R6..
  16. I dunno I’m kinda looking forward to the hype fest YouTube bonanza after such a grim dull year with all the delays and trade show cancellations.. Of course if you’re not in the market or not a Canon/Sony fan the upcoming weeks will probably be annoying as hell on your YT and camera related social media news feeds, but for Canon users like myself it’s kind of like D-Day (C-Day?) after such long tease period!
  17. I started on Nikon and still have a few nice lenses but the company has made some puzzling decisions lately and are really lagging heavily behind the competition.. Z6/Z7 weren’t at all bad efforts though imo, they are probably even my favorite current FF mirrorless design & ergonomics. I like the grip, front buttons, photo/video switch etc. The 35mm F1.8 S lens is also very nice. That said, Nikon has zero momentum. It’s like it released those cameras & lenses, made the ProRes RAW announcement and then dosed off into a coma. The D6 is a joke of an update spec wise. Z6S/Z7S? Yawn.. Nikon do need a serious shakeup or they may very well end up going the Nokia route as far as epic downfalls go!
  18. wow was not expecting compressed 8K or no crop 4K120p. those are some solid specs.
  19. I'm talking about electronic vari-ND.. and if the pocket-sized Ricoh GR & XT100 can do it, there must be a way to include it in a MILC.
  20. About the redesign, Tanaka said this at last year's CP+: "Many people have enjoyed the a7S II as a video camera, but originally we designed it for stills photography users. So if we’re going to create products [specifically] for video shooters, we’ll have to modify them in the future. (...) The basic expectation is for things like 4K/60, 10-bit 4:2:2, and a lot of manufacturers are doing that right now, but I want to think in a different way and create something that goes beyond the expectations of our customers. " I'm assuming that in order to get 4K60p / 10-bit 4:2:2 Sony has to redesign the physics of the A7 body to avoid overheating. This physical redesign is why it took them so long to release this camera and also the reason why even the latest gen Alpha bodies are still capping at 4K30 8-bit. Really hoping the "beyond customers expectations" means some innovative tech like the Vari-ND from the FS line.. that would certainly tip the scale in the upcoming R5/R6 battle.
  21. Yeah thats what I suspected, A9’s ultra low stills RS performance does not carry over to video.. and androidlad details why. The silly thing is PP’s are present in pretty much every alpha camera model except it’s flagship A9 series..
  22. Yeah Venice CS is superb. I have it set as default on my FS7. I didn't realise A7S3 was rumoured to be announced this month. Again. At this point Sony is like the boy who cried wolf with that camera, I'll believe it when I see it!
  23. Cool man, yeah I know the RS is great for stills but there is a A9 RS test on YT that shows it is clearly visible in video mode. (I won't link it as it may break the new forum policy rules). I'm sure the numbers are good, I'm just wondering how good exactly. A9 mark 1s have fallen really cheap, on the second hand market I've seen them as low as 2300 euros. For video, you lose S-Log compared to an A73 but if you do gain a lot in RS & AF I guess that could make it the best current Alpha cam. If so I may just be in the market for an A9 as an upgrade to the A73 for B-cam to my FS7.
  24. hmm.. kinda curious why you'd buy a A9 II if AF isn't important to you? you do shoot sports I assume? also what about the topic at hand: RS? I know the e-shutter for stills is around 6ms but for video I remember RS on A9 mk1 was good but nowhere near that low. Any numbers out there?
