  1. I’m curious how many 8K / 4KHQ sessions can you shoot with this hack before the temp reaches unsafe limits. Canon needs now to address all this ASAP with a firmware update!
  2. hmm well I guess there goes the whole artificial timer conspiracy theory. now all we need is a portable cryogenic device to carry R5 during shoots!
  3. Just downloaded a few clips and did some grading in Resolve. Skin tones are still bust in this camera, typical Sony zombie green/yellow tint. That being said the huge codec means it's an easy fix. Definitely the nicest quality files out of a Sony mirrorless, by far.
  4. Yikes what a messy situation. Although I guess the good news is no recall necessary. The rumored firmware update will probably “fix” the issue. They’ll claim a “bug” messed up recovery times and software “optimizations” will enhance heat management & recording times.
  5. No camera is perfect. We all have different needs. S1H is Netflix approved as it is one of the only large sensor hybrids that check marks their capture requirements ie. Timecode, high bitrate 10-bit 4:2:2 Log, DCI 4K, Anamorphic support. Of course the fact it has an active cooling system and won't overheat doesn't hurt. Narrative work rarely requires AF lenses so AF simply isn't an issue. It also has all the cine cam features like LUT assist, vector scopes etc. But for hybrid shooters, solo video shooters, vloggers, youtubers etc. AutoFocus is crucial, especially in FF which rules out the Pannys. R5 vs A7S3. Tough call. On paper, R5 should destroy A7S3. It has 45MP, 8K, DCI 4K, Better IBIS, better ergonomics, internal RAW. ..but in the real world, all that means nothing if your camera can't operate because it overheated. so by default, it would seem A7S3 wins. However if you're an outdoor shooter in warm weather, A7S3 may overheat even faster than R5. and when A7S3 overheats, it completely shuts off while it appears R5 allows you to switch to pixel-binned 4K.. but HQ recovery times are long. A7S3 does appear to be the safer bet if you're hard pressed for an upgrade. But if you already have an A73, is 12MP non-oversampled 4K really worth the 4200€ investment? Maybe for the HFR & 10-bit. I'll let you be the judge. Personally I'm not rushing in to buy either, hate being a beta-tester to first gen e-products.
  6. Well the recall rumors are purely speculative so “in denial” is rather extreme.
  7. The NFS tests are very interesting, especially Test #2 where 1500 photos were taken before switching the R5 to video mode & they still got over 17 minutes of 10-bit 8K recording. That particular test seems to kinda contradict Gerald’s tweet about not having a single second of HQ video after shooting stills for an hour. Speaking of Gerald, he did a 3 hour live stream about R5/R6. I haven’t had time to watch it but just happened to skim through it and he addressed Dan Watson’s A7S3 vs R5 overheat results. He kinda cops out by saying their pre production Sony units may be different and then suggests to Dan to redo the test with the Sony camera -in the shade- as he admits direct sunlight may not dissipate heat correctly on the Sony. Perhaps he should be the one to take the A7S3 out in the sunlight to corroborate or not Dans results.
  8. Yeah but it still feels like a free pass because a majority of the media is saying « A7S3 NEVER OVERHEATS » including the leaked sponsored B&H promo video. At least with the Canons, even brand ambassador Peter McKinnon talked about overheating in his sponsored video and Canon themselves published a detailed overheating chart. Sony per usual haven’t done that. Actually they claim you can shoot until you’re media card fills up or battery dies, which is a sneaky way to not admit overheating yet covering themselves legally. What is extremely strange is that in that one Florida sunlight test, the A7S3 shut down before the R5 and was measured a couple degrees hotter too. So is Canon being conservative with the overheating or is the Sony just not dissipating heat as well in that particular condition ? So many unknowns, it’s frustrating. I was interested in both cams but will probably sit this round out. Looks like the spec race has gone too far and this first gen of 4K120p cams just isn’t there yet as far as reliability..
  9. What’s funny is this camera is barely even out, And it is already redeemed DOA. Anyone here old enough to remember A7S2 launch? There was like one batch and then 4-6 months back order. Back then the tsunami was claimed to have disrupted Sony’s sensor facilities. I have no idea what the stock situation is with R5 or if a recall is planned but we are barely through a global pandemic and COVID19 did cause Canon Japan factories to shut down. Just saying..
  10. Interesting how you seem to conveniently omit the testings where the A7S3 shut done BEFORE the R5. Whos the fanboy now? BOTH cameras overheat, albeit the R5 more systematically whereas the Sony seems more unpredictable depending on sunlight, temp and codec settings. The R5 has a LQ « safety » mode that in theory never overheats. More tests need to be done there.
  11. The guy needs to just stick to the facts, cut the sales pitch. It’s like Behiri apologizing in his R6 review to his fake docu subjects. Cmon you knew the camera was going to overheat. You even had the ice packs ready. Just give us the facts and leave the narrative drama at home FFS..
  12. Typical bait & switch salesman tactic. Oldest trick in the book. Listen, I’m no conspiracist. But you people are so naive. Gerald isn’t your friend. He’s running a business. A YouTube gear review business. I wanna be there when his three A7S3s brick out on assignment in the field. But oh wait, that’s not his concern, he’s not a filmmaker, he’s a YouTube lab tester. Never leaves his temp controlled studio. Basically the vidéo gear equivalent of Unbox Therapy. Good, we need people like them testing gear. But take their clickbait catch phrases with a grain of salt. C300 MK3 review: « This is going to be my new daily driver. » A7S3 review week later: « This is going to be my new daily driver. » Tweet: « Here is proof, I’m buying 3! » ..and hence the hype train carries on around the blogosphere/forums and sponsored links bring in the revenue. Perfect technical masterpiece my a**. By the way, I’m saying all this as a Sony user interested in the A7S3. I won’t however give it a free pass in the overheat department, nor will I let Gerald off the hook for not taking his review unit outside and tweeting folks to ignore other people’s overheat testings. End rant.
  13. Oh right, the price / form factor argument! Kinda begs to question why was the C300 MK3 even considered in the first place? Oh wait maybe it never was.. M'kay.. Touché. Nonsense. A7S3 is a technical masterpiece & is as perfect as it gets!
  14. Why are you still even here arguing with me? God has spoken and you shall follow the rule of three: Click Geralds link and add to cart Three A7S3’s.. a C300 Mark 3 you shall forget & replace with thee.
  15. He could buy 10. Who the hell cares? Do you really rate gear on what other people purchase? As much as you’d like it to be it isn’t some popularity contest..
  16. @Nezza Right.. camera is “as perfect as it gets” in his own words. You should click the affiliate link and buy 3 as well!
  17. Hmm.. so now he's actually advising people to ignore the overheating tests. The plot thickens..
  18. That’s the thing though, you lose time in post having to fix the infamously poor SOOC white balance under mixed lighting on Sony cameras. That “Japan Mode” promo video above is a prime example of that. Skin tones are all over the place. Notice how they look ok in natural light outdoor shots then shift to zombie tones under the various artificial lights.
  19. ^ I'm pretty sure Canon & Sony agree with you there!
  20. Yeah call me tin foiled hat I don't care. I guess the recent Sony / AP deal, was also purely based on unbiased preference, no money was involved. 😂
  21. I'm aware of his reputation, that doesn't mean I'm going to give him a free pass for shitting the bed on the A7S3 overheating test. Never overheats my ass. How come when incorrect overheating claims for R5/R6 were made by other YT reviewers they were considered Canon shills, and yet Gerald gets a free pass? I know he's one of the more technical and usually thorough reviewer out there which is why I find this even fishier. As for the C300 III to A7S3 bait and switch claims, his credibility is really at risk here IMO.
  22. Also after watching the Gerald Undone video, I’m a little suspicious over his motives. He went the extra mile with the R5 overheating tests, causing many people to cancel their R5 pre-orders.. but then says in his video “the A7S3 doesn’t overheat” when we know from several sources it does overheat and VERY quickly at that in direct sunlight. I guess he covers his bases at the end when he says he only did “lab tests” i.e no outdoor field tests.. but not such a thorough reviewer after all. Furthermore, he mentions several times that he cancelled his C300 II purchase in favor of two A7S3’s. He never goes into the reasons why. I find that kinda sus.
  23. Yeah I’ve watched a bunch of A7S3 videos and unfortunately can’t say I’m very impressed by the colors, skin tones and overall look. It has that alpha series video look I’m not so fond of. Of course the 10-bit makes for smoother grading and the ALL-I fixes the horrendous motion cadence of A7III, but the absence of S-Cinetone is a shame. On the PotatoJet video you can really see what I’m talking about as the footage intercuts with FX9 footage that looks so much more organic/filmic. Of course when shooting 4K120p with cine/telephoto lenses the footage looks tasty but otherwise I havent seen anything really impressive.. yet. Will keep an open mind though as this camera ticks many boxes, but after the initial hype passes.. IQ is really what matters to me in the end, especially when considering a 4200€ mirrorless.
