  1. I think Canon are hoping to catch 5D2/5D3 glory days success with R5. 8K + 45MP could keep this camera selling for the next 3-4 years instead of the usual 1.5-2 year cycle of mirrorless. If they don’t F things up of course. Its what we’ve been saying for years: Canon could sweep up the market if they just gave us what we want, i.e. a no compromise hybrid solution (that you don’t need to sell a kidney for). As for R6, i think there’s a bit of confusion as it’s supposed to be a cheaper model (think 6D). Don’t expect 1DX3 in MILC format.
  2. Ah great catch/relief! So yeah total BS “red flag” from Granger..
  3. Total click-bait for sure.. I love how he states to never believe rumors, only to proceed to full speculation moments later! he does raise a somewhat semi-valid suspicion I guess about the possibility of MJPEG for 8K: From a video perspective, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will prepare videographers for the future of movie-making- capturing 8K footage today allows for even higher-quality 4K productions in addition to the ability to extract high-resolution still images from the video footage. To my knowledge only the 1DX2 & 5D4 had a stills extract from video feature and both those cams used MJPEG. The thought alone of that codec returning gives me the shivers and it would be plain silly for Canon to place such an inefficient codec for such high resolution video files. But who knows.. when Canon introduced 4K on the 1DC it did have that one caveat!
  4. Canon have been working on 8K for a long ass time. In fact they first presented their prototype at Canon Expo in 2015: Canon Expo 2015: 8K Cinema EOS technology demo camera recording to four external recorders Some footage even appeared last year: ..and here is the official page of the mammoth housed in what most thought might be the C300 mk3: https://www.canon-europe.com/photokina/8k-camera/ "Capture exceptional detail with our first 8K camera in a Cinema EOS system." Now what is sort of mind-boggling to me is that they are finally introducing this tech in a consumer camera first! 🤯
  5. Z6, EOS R, XT3, BMPC4K were all released in 2018. depending on what your needs were they were arguably better choices. Sony didn't innovate much either with A73.. same resolutions, same codecs etc.. they mainly brought the price down which made it a huge success. We're still waiting in 2020 for a sign from Sony of the unicorn A7S3, but no dice. I think they waited too long and are in a rut now as they won't risk cannibalising FS/FX line.
  6. It's funny Canon always seems to be on the "Guilty until proven innocent" side. I mean I know it's hard to swallow for some because Canon has had a poor rep in the past, but please take a look at the 1DX3 specs. To me it's a clear indicator Canon have changed strategies, and seriously upped the ante when it comes to video specs. Pretty sure they're on a mission to sweep up the hybrid floor and take back their lead position. In any case, this seems a solid camera on both photo & video side even with the unknowns .
  7. @OliKMIA Dude, you didn't get the memo? It's official, Canon is bringing the first 8K MILC to the market. Brace yourself: it's happening.
  8. close? the A73 has the worst codec out of all current-gen FF cameras!
  9. By definition IBIS is "In Body". Here is the official development announcement section: The EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) and when used in conjunction with the extremely effective in-lens stabilization (IS), will allow photographers to handhold the camera in light levels not previously imagined. Lens OIS + EIS was what they were already doing previously. R5 is actual real mechanical IBIS.
  10. I dunno. The Sony Hammer? Guess they had to give FS5 something the other cams couldn't do. I think FS7 mk2 has it too though. It's ace tech, they should really spread it across every video centric product imo. Actually it's my biggest hope for A7S3, amazing low-light AND vari-ND. Shoot wide-open non-stop day & night!
  11. As far as ergonomics & features, the Canon competition have to start implementing stuff like internal NDs.. Sony especially should include the FS5's Vari-ND tech inside Alpha series. I don't see them going too far up resolution/codec wise because of XDCam cannibalisation fear. Panasonic are in the best position to compete on that front, but they really need to sort out PDAF, and maybe hire better design team (take some cues from Leica ffs)! Fuji, I'd love them to do a proper cine cam, but make it radical by taking cues from retro 8mm pistol cams:
  12. Agreed. Sony are in a rut. They're $11K FX9 only does UHD. 10-bit but no internal Raw. No way XDCam managers will let Alpha series equate let alone go above that. Sony will have to fall back on other tech to impress their (shrinking by the minute) audience. Lowlight, megapixels, AF (insect recognition?) etc..
  13. ^I think that torch/hammer should really be passed on to Sony.. who keep recycling sensors & processors.. and still haven't gone beyond the 8-bit 100mbps 4K30p video specs introduced 5 years ago on the A7S2. Meanwhile, Canon have introduced 5.5K RAW & 10-bit on 1DX3 and have now leapfrogged everyone with first 8K mirrorless. That said, the R5 will surely have some limitations. I'm betting on no 10-bit internal. Maybe RAW. 8K with a crop? Burst? I'll let the sensor mathematicians make those calculations!
  14. A7S3 Dev Team: Ok, back to the drawing boards folks. Seriously, I don't see how Sony or anyone is going to compete with this in the near future. Nikon took a hard L yesterday with the D6 announcement. Now Canon is here to finish them off. This camera feels like the true successor of the 5D3 (let's just forget the 5D4/EOS R). No more Touch Bar, joystick & scroll-wheel are back. Even the Rate button is there, hallelujah! Canon is back for revenge with the 1DX3 & R5. I'm just glad I stuck with them throughout the years (which will be regarded as the 'dark ages' lol).
  15. ..new leaks confirming: 45MPx, 8K, IBIS, dual card slots..and a pic: https://www.01net.com/actualites/canon-annonce-developper-l-eos-r5-son-premier-hybride-capable-de-filmer-en-8k-1855669.html#&gid=1&pid=1
  16. CanonRumors update: I have heard from a few people since this post, and apparently Canon Rumors has caused some stress at a few Canon subsidiaries. One person did tell us that the rumored Canon EOS R5 specifications are very close to 100% correct, but a few things are off. I did receive further confirmation that 8K is there though. We should hear more tonight/tomorrow.
  17. Having worked in the corporate video field for close to a decade, I am sadly well too aware of such situations. I've had my own share of cool projects that were green lit only to be later butchered by the PC police or worst: shelved during or after completion. I know its games risk but the motives are often so ridiculous, and results in a total waste of time, money, creative talent & energy. You would honestly expect in the creative field that a company like Fuji would stand behind their ambassador amidst such a ridiculous controversy, or at the very least issue a statement.. but just plain dropping him like that because of a few wild comments saying he should get punched in the face is vile imho.

    Fuji X-T4

This camera can't come out fast enough.. I skipped XH1 because of XT3, and then skipped XT3 because of XH2/XT4. Cannot wait to get back into X system! (sadly my XT2 got stolen 2 years ago. Miss it SO much!)
  19. It doesn't really matter how you perceive this artist.. I just find it really lame that Fuji aren't standing behind their ambassador. They know Suzuki's style. They edited the video, proofed it, released it with their logo. Now because of a few comments and polarising opinions on the internet, they pull the plug on him. Not just the video, they remove his entire page/history from their website! It's not like there is a Harvey Weinstein scandal here FFS... I guess it's the time we live in.. where YouTube commenters and like buttons have the power to destroy someone's career. There are a lot more controversial artists out there than Suzuki by the way.. I guess the bottom line is indeed to be weary of any kind of endorsement deal.. the added exposure to a mainstream audience that may not understand/accept what you're doing could be fatal.
  20. Spent some time with the 1DX3. It's an amazing beast of a camera as expected. The AF is so fast I could hardly notice it 'working' half the time. Lightning quick response. The touch screen response is also on another level VS previous generation. AF is definitely present in all shooting modes (including 120fps) except above 4K30p. RS quite visible in FF 4K24p. Gets much better in 4K crop mode (which is 1.3x like 1DX2). Anyways, I realise everybody is waiting for R5/R6 announcements now but the 1DX3 is definitely a power house. I'd even say the most advanced performing DSLR I've ever handled. Quite impressive.
  21. This is plain wrong if true: Fujifilm Removes Tatsuo Suzuki from X Photographer Program after his Controversial Street Photography Shooting Style in X100V Video
  22. Street photography has been around for ages: .. YouTube just wasn’t around to document the photogs in action. Sure, Suzuki’s style is a little more in your face, but I’ve seen other street photographers get away with it as well. I think the fact the guy looks and acts a little creepy is what gets him those protective reactions. Especially within the context of Japan, so I’d say dude is clearly playing with peoples comfort zones, which is interesting & ballsy. The X100 series, which are heavily inspired from Leica rangefinders, is the obvious choice for such photography and it makes perfect sense to have a skilled street photographer in the promos. But I guess it backfired for obvious reasons. All these “privacy” laws etc surely are killing this particular genre of shooting.
  23. Agreed. My assessment is that Sony is content (up to now at least) with its Alpha series 8-bit video specs for prosumers, and is hence protecting their cine line. At the same time this policy means no rush in developing beyond Bionz X or heat-management, the 2 bottlenecks towards better video specs. The competition knows this, which is why Canon are imo taking this as big opportunity to take market shares by themselves going beyond their usual stagnancy and deliver us the goods so to speak.
  24. lol this reminds me the same types of arguments that went on in 2012 when Canon first introduced 4K to the hybrid world with the 1DC. rare were those that though it was useful or manageable back then either, yet here we are today! 8k will allow further cropping for 4K/FHD timelines. oversampling for a sharper 4K. and actual resolution gain for those exporting in 8k. i recently upgraded to an iMac Pro 5K so already 4K is showing it's "limits" on screen. I'd be fine with 5.5K/6K though. but I don't get the complaining as nobody will be forcing you to shoot in 8K. having it on-board though is a nice future-proofing for the years ahead. in the end it's kind of a chicken & the egg thing. you need 8k capable cameras, to create/push 8k content, 8k monitors/TVs etc.
