  1. EOS R -like most MILC systems- is aimed at photographers first, videographers second. Again BM isn't even in that hybrid market, so they aren't competing with it let alone dominating it. Canon have two cameras coming (R5 & R6) one will be expensive, the other less so. Seems like a sound strategy, not to mention if the specs are true it very well might be the class-leading FF units for 2020. Only wild card left is Sony and I don't really see them topping this.
  2. EOS R is a FF hybrid mirrorless system. Blackmagic is none of that. They don't even do AF. Your comparison is irrelevant. We don't know anything about the pricing or final specs yet so it's a little early to complain about pricing don't you think?!
  3. Don’t be silly now. Those days are long over. The competition is fierce, the market has shrunk and Canon are acknowledging both in their financial report. The specs aren’t that crazy either. We know nothing yet about crop factor, codec bit depth or if RAW is there. My guess is it will have slightly inferior specs to 1DX3. Id say expect S1H pricing on the R5 ($4000-4500) & S1 pricing on the R6 ($2500).
  4. Canon open up about R strategy in their latest financial report: “Although we have launched two full-frame mirrorless cameras as well as ten dedicated lenses, our lineup is still insufficient. In order to recover from our late entry into the mirrorless camera market, we have plans to launch a model that incorporates a newly developed image sensor and image-processing engine that offer even more advanced features. We will work to raise our presence in the mirrorless camera category, leveraging large trade exhibitions around the world. Even amid increasing competition, we will expand sales of higher-end models driven by new products and aim for top market share even in the mirrorless camera market.” ..Stars are aligning!
  5. @Michi Good catch! I forgot all about that interview.. I'm hearing Feb. 13 announcement. that's just 2 weeks away from today!
  6. Yeah my guess is 8K TimeLapse like Nikon introduced some time ago.. Yeah in Bastille. I had planned to go but something came up. I don't regret now with these new rumoured products! My next camera will have IBIS, that much is for sure..
  7. CR is one of the more reliable rumour sites. It does remain a rumour site. Those early specs weren't rated CR3. It does make sense that if we only are less than a month away before the announcement, that more accurate info would emerge. 1DX3 this is not though. 12FPS mechanical barely puts it in 2012 1DX mark 1 league. We know nothing about buffer. AF. The video specs, I am sure there will be caveats. That said, I'll happily upgrade if we just get IBIS and no crop 4K. RAW would be of course icing on the cake. I wonder if someone at Canon woke up and realised what MLRAW did to 5D3 sales.. Anyways, I'll be glad to no longer consider 1DX3 as an option. That form facto, lack of IBIS & price was not something I was excited about after the initial hype wore off (I even skipped the local preview event yesterday!).
  8. Canon catering to the needs of videographers? Heresy! It's going to get interesting around here when these cameras do come out lol! I believe the "shift" in strategy is probably due to tech R&D (EOS R was rushed out the door to be out in time to block Nikon) but also due to slow sales and expanding competition in the FF market. Canon put out a lot of pricey RF glass and needs to move it so that should explain them going all out as they did with 1DX3 (DSLR sales have also been plummeting). Of course I agree some of those specs seem too good to be true and will probably feature some kind of catch. Canon aren't crazy enough to give you a mirrorless that beats their flagship cine camera. They certainly seem back in the race though which is a blessing for those of us that haven't yet left the system.
  9. New battery, but the same shape and compatibility as the EOS 5D Mark IV check again, the above spec is in bold. furthermore, canonrumors added this tidbit: Is this really the high megapixel replacement for the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R? It doesn’t feel that way to me, it seems more like an EOS 5D Mark V as it has been presented. Remember, we made up “EOS RS” as a model name and we have no confirmation on what this new camera may be called. Canon have always been known to react primarily to Nikon, their historical competitor (even the EOS R was announced days after Z6/Z7). And Nikon have just announced their D780. 5D MkIV is also long due for a sequel. Just saying these things do add up..
  10. A lot of confusion it seems over these leaks. Looking at the rumoured info closer: Scroll wheel added to the back Liveview/Movie toggle like previous EOS DSLRs New battery, but the same shape and compatibility as the EOS 5D Mark IV ..what if this new camera wasn't simply the 5D Mark V? (Code name EOS R5) the R6 sounds more like an EOS R follow-up.

    Fuji X-T4

Announcement Feb 26 with a release in March 2020 is off to a good start!
  12. not sure I'll be able to check all of those, but will do my best! BTW, I think it's already been reported there is a 30mn recording limit no?
  13. The chart clearly indicates that AF doesn't function in all FF 4K60p modes. It does in 4K60p crop. As for this: Dual Pixel AF operates in all modes except for none crop 4K or RAW at 60p/50p recording. The phrasing is a little confusing but I'm sure they mean: except for none crop 4K at 60p/50p. In any case I'll make sure to verify this myself next week when I should get a hands-on the unit.
  14. Hope to get some hands-on time with a unit next week at a preview event. Anything particular you guys would like to know?
  15. Maybe this site should be renamed ANTI-EOSHD? While Netflix is technically TV, Canon was all over the Oscars documentary category last year: https://***URL not allowed***/oscars-2019-all-nominated-documentaries-shot-on-canon-cameras/ And in this years 2020 nominees, one of the most talked about docu, American Factory (first film out of Obama's production company) was shot on... a 2014 C100 mk2: ..ironically it was picked up by Netflix at Sundance (and is currently streaming on the platform). So while many seem to obsess over "Netflix approved" cameras, this seems to prove that shooting great content will always trump camera specs.
  16. Who cares about what T&C uses? Since when have they been an authority on videography..or even photography? They use what they see fit for their needs. Like most people. Sony has had a long head start on FF mirrorless. Chances are if you've made the switch to Sony before CaNikon entered the market, you're going to stick with it. Main reason EOS R has been so successful with Youtubers is because it has a flip screen, DPAF.. and solid CS SOOC. Sony is in a coma though concerning video specs in 2020, I think we all agree. Same codec/resolution for the last 5 years. Still WB/CS issues. It's quite mind-blowing considering how competitive the FF mirrorless market has become. They seem to have totally abandoned the video side!
  17. It’s no secret RED & ARRI share the spotlight in high-end filmmaking production. That ranking has more to do with budget and industry standards than anything else. When you’re on a high budget and can rent anything you’re going to go for that latest RED or ARRI. Maybe a Venice or Varicam if you’re going for a different look. The C300 II is by far the cheapest camera on that list. It came out in 2015. The fact that it’s even on that list is to me a testament of its long lasting appeal. It certainly isn’t a flop in other filmmaking scenes like docu where it usually comes up on top. BTW I don’t see Ursa Mini, EVA1 or FS7 on that list at all. All Netflix approved cameras that came out around or after C300 II. What does that make of them?
  18. Agreed. I’m also based in Paris and that sounds like a total stretch.. especially the 5D4 part lol. I don’t work with TV that much but it so happens I was just on set of a major docu TV shows here and it was shot with three C300 mkII’s. One being handheld with the 17-55mm F2.8 IS. That actually surprised me so yeah Canon is definitely still popular. I could definitely see how a 1DX3 could be used for maybe gimbal work, B-cam as its currently the only Canon camera under 10K that can shoot broadcast 10-bit 422. But I don’t see too many production companies dumping the C-line / FS7s for a 1DX3.
  19. Well Sony hasn't had a video-centric camera since A7S2 came out.. that was 5 years ago in 2015!! A7III was hardly an improvement over that (same codec/resolution, oversampling but with massive NR). So they are seriously lagging while the competition has never been so strong in the FF mirrorless sector. As for BMD, they are imo the people's champ and the reason why we're seeing RAW & ProRes RAW in other consumer cams. BRAW is also quite an accomplishment & even the fact they bundle DaVinci is a very strong incentive to get switch to their system. What I find interesting is how few have adopted S1/S1R/S1H despite Panny being #1 overall. Another interesting poll idea would be what lenses people use (focal length, brand, prime/zoom/cine etc).
  20. iPhone/smartphones should be in the list, even though I understand why they aren’t
  21. Panasonic fanboys will tell ya: Real Men don’t use AF. Canon fanboys will say: FF is overrated, crop brings you closer to S35 ciné standards. Sony fanboys over any criticism: My favorite company is #1. Na-na-nana-na.
  22. Holy crap that ain’t looking right.. and nowhere near 1DX2’s 14ms RS. Hopefully crop mode will fare better for those action shots that may require acceptable RS.
  23. No need to be condescending or romanticize the camera as some kind of elite DOP members only unit. FS7 is a tool. A damn good one but the fact remains like on most Sony’s the SOOC color science and WB is shit. If it weren’t why does Sony make such a big deal about its successor FX9 having much improved CS, skin tones etc? In Cine EI mode, arguably the FS7’s most interesting mode to shoot in.. you only get 3 WB temp settings! Madness, and another thing the FX9 fixes. Fortunately, it is the very high bit rate 10-bit 422 that saves you in post to adjust the WB & color match your footage accurately because all the color info is kept there. And again in camera LUT support means you can easily import your favorite look and have decent CS SOOC if you so desire.
  24. Not really. great thing about the FS7 is that in 10-bit Cine EI mode you got all the necessary flexibility, and with in-camera LUT support u can basically get Venice CS SOOC..
