Sorry my bad.. replace butt-hurt [Sony] fanboy with [Nikon/Fuji].
-
Looks like my comment has got some Sony fanboys triggered. Canon actually had their Cinema division work hand in hand with Imaging to produce R5. Thatโs how they leapfrogged the competition. I stand by my words, only Sony can compete in this FF hybrid battle due to their AF & sensor advancements. But they will have a hell of a hard time matching let alone trump Canon on this one. The specs are out did you not get the memo? 8K / 4K120fps + IBIS > 5.9K / 4K60p + EIS Obviously the C500ii has a slew of other advantages that are proper to Cine cams of that price range but on resolution, HFR, stabilisation.. YES the R5 outperforms the C500ii. And on the codec front they are similar which is also unprecedented considering the C200 doesn't even have 10-bit internal. Log options, recording times, media, I/O, NDs etc.. obviously all goes to the C500ii. What you can't seem to get a grasp on is that it's a first for to have a consumer line hybrid stills cam outperform a dedicated cine cam on both resolution and HFR.. as well as equate it on codecs and sensor size. That alone is huge and a total game changer. DR & RS? Of course it will probably still tilt towards the cine cams. C300iii even announced a breakthrough in the DR department. Canon aren't crazy, they will not stop developing & innovating their cine line, I never ever stated that. Their strategy however is to stop pulling the cripple hammer on consumer division. They've realised the +$10K cine market isn't the same as their consumer hybrids and that there is little to no risk of cannibalising these two markets. If anything, pros will buy BOTH cams for A/B purposes. Again this is a giant game changer as far as imaging/cinema strategies within a Japanese company. I know its hard to believe this is all coming from Canon, a brand many had lost all hopes, but it's true. These are all FACTS, not some dreamed up unicorn A7S3 R5-Killer Sony fanboy wishful thinking. If you don't realise that, then you're the one who should take your own advice and get a grip on reality.

With these monster specs, Canon is really aiming at crushing the competition, and possibly flushing out Panasonic & Nikon from the FF hybrid game. Sony are indeed the only ones that are capable of competing but that would mean making a camera with higher specs than their new FX range and that's going to be a huge dilemma for them. Heat management is also going to be a major problem for them in their current form factor, and Sony prizes themselves on their compact products, they hate the idea of going bulkier on future models (dates back from the Japanese miniaturisation philosophy on consumer electronics). I honestly don't see any camera company challenging these specs for the forseeable future. Its kinda nuts what Canon are achieving here!

Yeah well better early than late to the party! (by the way, R5 production is also delayed until probably Q3/Q4)
-
Also let's not forget the FF mirrorless market has become crowded: Canon, Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma, Leica.. Seems Canon wanted to leapfrog everyone in time for the Tokyo Olympics.

Of course it is real IBIS: For the first time on any Canon camera, 5 axis In Body sensor movement Image Stabilisation is offered which works in harmony with Canon RF lenses to combine Optical and In-Body Image Stabilisation to provide the ultimate in shake free super-sharp images and movies. https://www.canon.co.uk/cameras/eos-r5/

Canon are going in for the kill with C300mk3 & R5. Cinema & Imaging teams working hand in hand is a beautiful thing for us, and something Sony needs to learn from.

NAB would have started on 11th April - Still no A7S III?
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Pretty sure a COVID-19 vaccine will be out before a new A7S. R5 sent Sony back to the drawing boards for the 28th time. Must be hard trying to exceed expectations in such a crowded industry. -
The potential overheating issue is much more of a deal breaker to me. You got a link to that video? I was set to purchase a X100V as travel hybrid but the camera overheated after 5 minutes (!!!) during a basic 4K test at the camera shop. Even during still shooting I could feel the back of the camera get hot (now a known issue on the X100V). I'm sort of fearing Fuji is cramming too high specs for their compact bodies, a problem Sony got into around A7R2.

That ainโt s*** : -
That's pretty neat you got a direct response from the CEO! Lotta bugs on this unit it seems. A shame considering its price point. Keep debugging / reporting issues, hopefully in couple months the FP will be solid. Haven't shot with it personally, but I really enjoyed the build quality..

EOSHD in lockdown in Barcelona - photos from Coronavirus ghost town
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yeah similar situation in France. We're officially on lockdown but still quite a few people in major cities not taking it seriously enough. doesn't help that there are major loopholes in the official document you need to fill out to go outside. We're on day 6 here and I'm already fighting depression.. business has ground to a halt, far away from family & friends. don't even have my music recording equipment to work on those songs I never usually have time to put into. on the upside all camera related GAS has suddenly vanished.. and at least I managed to escape to the countryside, Paris was a mad house.. good luck to everyone! -
...wording sounds pretty clear to me!

@mercer standard resolve RAW settings tab. @gt3rs should work on the free version (I can import and get access to the same RAW tab settings on C200 files using free version). it is great it is already compatible although makes you wonder perhaps 1DX3 CRM file is similar structure if not identical to C200 CRM files.

Yeah they're not yet flying reviewers to Vegas or the Bahamas to get a hands-on.. there is still some ways to go lol. I also think there is just genuine interest/hype over this camera as it's really a class-leading APS-C hybrid. As for the "more buttons & switches" comment, I didn't really notice that. They just relocated stuff around to make it more balanced towards video.

Here is some low light footage using IBIS+EIS from an actual DP who knows what he's doing and not trying to VLOG: Looks pretty smooth & artefact free to me..
-
I think the main problem coming from these videos is that 90% are made from photographers that have limited understanding of video work. They think IBIS is a gimbal replacement or some sort of steady cam. It is not. If you add to the fact a lot of the footage displaying wobble artefacts are probably using the new EIS feature, well that just adds to the misjudgment of the IBIS. From the few footage that uses the IBIS correctly, it seems to me that it works really well. Nothing to worry about. Same thing for AF, even Canons dual pixel AF isn't flawless and won't replace a follow focus. There is actually technique to maximise a camera's AF sticky rate. Lens choice, lighting can also alter performance. That's not to say these pre-production cameras don't have issues, but until they ship these videos are just what they are: an early hands-on approach.

I have the opposite experience but to each their own, I'm not trying to impose my views.. just stating my preference.

Yeah in theory that should be the case, in reality it simply isn't. Most companies outsource to China for cost & volume ramping and that has significant effect on QC. That's just the way it is.. and XT3 is certainly proof of that. We're talking serious hardware malfunctions, glue smells etc. Never were these problems ever noticed on any MIJ fuji cam. The Fuji plant in Sendai is also notorious to take QC to an extreme level: I just don't see that type of infrastructure / QC in China. Besides with coronavirus related production issues, I'd rather not be too dependant on China with my gear at the moment..
-
When Fuji shifted production from Japan to China on XT3 there were quite a couple lemon units. That wasn't nearly the case with XT2. Quality Control just isn't the same. Anyways, are you saying XT4 country of origin is random?
-
wtf just noticed this: ..different manufacturing depending on color or do you think the made in Japan is pre-sample model only? I usually always get black version but would go silver if it means MIJ..

...and 8K like EOS R5 ๐ https://www.canon-europe.com/photokina/8k-camera/

Hopefully RF mount..

sorry to bring bad news.. but wait could be longer than you think.. shipping is delayed & estimated early may (if not longer depending on coronavirus situation). ๐

Panasonic are literally in survival mode: Panasonic interview: 'If we stay united I think we will survive'
