tomsemiterrific got a reaction from mechanicalEYE in Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
Well, I didn't say he said it was horrid. I said he said something like that. In his recent review of the G85 he said this:
"I didn’t expect to like it when it came out. On paper and on the shelf it looks a bit boring. There’s Panasonic’s colour science, which is dreadful and a bit like what Sony do. Nothing like a Canon."
So, there you have it. He called Panasonic's color science "dreadful." Now, we can debate the weight of these words, but neither "horrid" nor "dreadful" are what anyone would call complementary. Nicht Wahr?

It was a paid upgrade before so it's nothing new, sony charges 500dollar for a 4K upgrade on their x70. Panasonic has always released their camera's at a very competitive pricepoint and cheaper then the competition so even with the VLOG upgrade it's still very good value for money, also, not everyone needs or wants VLOG and for those who do it's 100 dollar which is peanuts.

I also notice that you can control the colour depth on the A7S II with S-Gamut selected, but on the A6300 you can't.
I'll be doing an updated EOSHD Pro Color soon and a few other tweaks.
No need to email me yourself - I'll be emailing all EOSHD Pro Color customers once it's ready.
Ah yes but if you want to apply a LUT it's better not to shoot with a profile designed for baked in straight out of camera colour.
    SLOG2 is for LUTs.

There's definitely a big difference/improvement in the mkii from the a7s. Sony added a new color gamut which, I believe, is supposed to be more accurate with colors and better in general. I'm assuming these settings definitely perform better from the get-go in the a7sii, but we've got to alter them a bit for the original a7s.

I really like the results--better than any I've ever got from standard Sony color. And the LUTS in his LUT package are the best I've ever used. Here's the out of the camera footage, and at the end a clip of his S-log 2 ungraded, and then graded with one of his LUTS. I was happier with this footage than anything I ever got on an FS100, FS700, and FS5.

Personally I think this looks pretty awful. I haven't seen much from my XC10 that looks that bad, but if I did I'd be loathe to use it.

Yes, the Sony looks a lot better in that vid. But, something fishy is going on here or the user hasn't a clue what they're doing. I don't think the XC10 was set to its best picture style for that test. It looks like it could be the most contrasty one, which has much less DR than C-Log or WideDR. Also, there's something weird happening with compression that is destroying detail in the Canon but leaving the Sony untouched! There's an A/B comparison at about 53 seconds in. At 54 seconds the XC10 turns to total mush, but the Sony is fine. Don't trust this comparison.

    Was this ISO500? Looks good!
Implying a firmware fix might be possible

Looks pretty good. There is a slight green cast to the highlights (neck area) in the second clip. It might just be down to how each camera handles color balance/temp. The purple looks more saturated in the second clip. I doubt viewers would really notice either that much.

Yes, this is the XC15. I sold my XC10 to purchase it---I never noticed any issue with the XC10, but perhaps I'm not as skilled or attentive to details as i should be. I do a lot of education videos and the new XLR attachment and audio processing offered on the XC15 is excellent--had to have it, and now the XC15 is complete, at least for my primary purposes.
Note, that a firmware update is coming for the XC10 that will give it the Cps and color space of the XC15--and (I hope) the waveform as well. It is very, very helpful, especially shooting in Log. Could it not be possible that Canon knows about this issue, and has silently addressed the issue in the XC15, and plan to do the same for the XC10 in its next firmware update???

    Ghost free!
Big thanks for that @tomsemiterrific. Looks clean as a whistle on my end, no motion ghosting. If I did what you did with my cam, it'd look like we were all on mushrooms. ..
@mercer or any other XC10 owner, can you check if your results are clean @20000 ISO like tom, or sick like kidzrevil and me?

OMG, the XC15 is clean, the ghosting issue is probably inherent to the XC10 only, time to sell your XC10 and upgrade!!!

Kidzrevil--here's the video you wanted to see. Where do you find the kind of Ghosting shown in your original example. Shot in 4k, HDR CP, with sharpening....

I'll try to get it done this evening. Work today. In the flowerpot scene I can't see any ghosting; the ISO was 20,000 and sharpening was actually set about half way up the degrees---normally I shoot Clog so I haven't actually turned sharpening off--as it my habit with all CPs.

I did a couple of tests and didn't experience any thing like I see in the examples above.
Next, I put a pot of flowers in low light and ran the ISO to 20,000---still, no ghosting.
Disclaimer: I have an XC15--but I don't think that should really make any difference. Right?!?
I'll keep testing and keep a look out for it in the future. Weird.

I have not experienced this with my XC10 (with the latest firmware). I just did a quick test with high ISO and IS enabled. No issue.

I wonder if they've addressed this issue with the XC15. Lots of professionals who are very critical love this image/color of the XC10/15 and there's never been any mention of any such problems in the past. You would think if it's common you'd hear lots of people talking about "ruined" footage. Any comments???

Yeah, this is a cool test. I don't have any exact numbers, but I know a lot of TV shows use the C300, and I'm sure a few features as well... So the fact that an indie filmmaker could pick up an XC10/15 for around 2 grand and shoot at C300 level is astonishing and one of the reasons I bought the XC10.
