Kisaha reacted to ade towell in Canon EOS-R8, EOS-R50 And New Lenses Announced
I went from Canon R6 to Panasonic S5ii with 20-60 and 50 1.8 lenses - have no regrets at all.
The S5ii with sigma adaptor and ef lenses is great, again no complaints and works with AF really well, no noticeable difference to how the same lenses worked with ef to rf adaptor on the R6
Anyway I wrote about it a while ago, don't know a clever way to link to it so will copy and paste below, am sure there are some similarities between the R6 and R8 here...
"Ok have been using and testing the S5ii for a few weeks now as a replacement for Canon R6 and am overall very happy with it. Will be selling the R6.
I did consider getting the R6ii but it was nearly £800 more expensive than the S5ii and still had some of the issues I had with the R6 - namely micro HDMI, no external monitor when using the touchscreen, and still the relatively poor DR of Canon mirrorless
The new R8 also came into the picture but no IBIS and poor battery life meant it wouldn't work for me.
I looked at used R5's too but was put off by the 30 minute record limit, micro HDMI, lingering doubts about it still overheating and relatively poor DR with higher price tag and added expense of new cf express cards.
Back to the S5ii and I've really enjoyed using it. Where I feel it is better than the R6 is...
IBIS - this is big for me and didnt realise just how much better it is than on the R6. Has really helped speed up the filming process grabbing handheld shots I wouldn't have the confidence to do with the Canon.
DR, again quite a big difference, image feels fuller and cleaner than R6
Full size HDMI - again for me a biggie. I tried using a micro HDMI clamp on Fuji Xt3 and it still broke. I detest micro HDMI and has no place on a camera that claims to take video seriously.
External monitor works whilst still having access to a fully functioning touchscreen of the camera. You can also put luts on the monitor image. All very nice for my ageing eyes
Audio - this is the first mirrorless camera where I feel comfortable recording sound internally on important stuff. The 96khz 24 bit with line level and decent preamps I think make all the difference. I use Sound Devices mix pre-d for XLR on the base of the camera. I know Panasonic and Sony and now Canon using Tascam have an xlr audio adaptor you can attach to the hotshoe but that seems a crazy place to hang xlr cables to me and looks like an accident waiting to happen. Am very happy not using external audio and syncing up.
AF for video - using the Sigma adaptor my EF lenses work on the S5ii just as well as they do on the R6. This has been a bit of a surprise I thought the R6 would still be better for AF but for my uses I think they are about the same. The S5ii sticks to its subject just as well. For stills I haven't really tested too much - for sports or wildlife fast moving stuff I presume the R6 maybe better but that's not what I photograph. Am still waiting for Capture one to be able to use RAW on the S5ii but have been very happy with the jpegs so far. Am aware the R6ii has improved feature with subject only that maybe better now for video AF
Lenses - I got the 20-60mm and 50mm 1.8 with the S5ii at a good price. They are both great lenses for video - well built, silent and fast AF and come with good quality lens hoods. Drives me mad that with Canon you have to buy an L lens to get a hood. The 20-60mm is surprisingly good, 20mm is a great bonus when traditionally these zooms start at 24mm. The zoom ring is quite firm but solid and won't extend under gravity like my 24-105mm L lens is prone to do. I love the 50mm it has a nice big dampened focus ring and is a good size and weight on the S5ii, feels nicely balanced. Am using it way more than I ever did the little plastic 50mm stm lens I have for the R6 which was slow with AF and cheap feeling focus ring. I think these silent focusing Panasonic lenses are better for video than most of the noisy Canon lenses i have.
Crop mode in apsc the S5ii is sharper and cleaner than the R6, handy for extra reach
Colour - I really like working with vlog in Resolve and feel it is more malleable than the Canon R6's clog3 which has less DR to play with and has some strange cut off going on in the shadows.
One thing I will miss about the R6 is the Meike vari nd filter adapter I used which was great when using EF lenses and better and much cheaper thsn the Canon version. I hear that Meike are making one for the Panasonic so will be keen to get that so long as it works as well as the Sigma adaptor does.
R6 has 4k 50p full frame but I don't use it so no big deal for me - obviously for some it is important
Anyway that's all I can think of for now, hope someone finds it useful"

Just to add there has been no issues of overheating whatsoever with the S5ii, don't think I'd trust a Canon to be that reliable. Having that peace of mind is huge for me

Yeah, I hope they fix the CDAF on FHD 50P/60P mode, cause that is ridiculous.

Well, can't comment on anything Canon as I have never owned one but did consider the R7 along with various other Canon offerings.
Usual caveats of YMMV plus your own individual needs plus most things are 'good enough' these days so comes back to the individual needs bit in the end, but...
S5ii vs S5iix is quite a simple one:
S5ii = cheaper vs S5iix = pricier, better for rigging out, for fans of The Batman.
I don't need to and won't be rigging out, but I am a fan of The Batman, so went that route for that reason alone.
Love the look of the Leica SL2-S and the Lumix S5iix is essentially going to be my 'SL2-S', except better. And cheaper. As in I can get nearly 2 of the things for the same price. No contest when it's purely business, Lumix wins. It doesn't have any kind of tilting screen (the Leica) so a bit of a negative for me.
From what I understand, the Sigma ef adapter works of course, but is not great if good AF is a priority. It's not something I'm going to be using as between Sigma and Panny, they have all the lenses I want and need.
OK, hoping for a more compact I series 70-200 zoom, or better yet, an equivalent of the Tamron 35-150 but more compact, such as say 40-120, just as long as it's constant f2.8. But going off on a tangent now...

Forgot their name, they haven't launched any products yet which you can buy right now today. But they've been around at the tradeshows though, showing what they've got in development coming soon.

I bought the Tascam today as a local shop had it in stock.

This is now my family/holiday setup. You'll have to imagine my belly there, hanging over the belt of my trousers.
I was tempted by alternatives. To go all out on quality with the Sennheiser - too much money! To stay minimal with the internal mic and a little windjammer - the mics on this cam are at the back: too much me! To buy nothing and stick with the stereo Rode - too top heavy!
I found that the foam from my Rode fits snugly on the Tascam and this coupled with an old Rode windjammer does a much better job than the included windscreen.

@MrSMW I picked up a Sigma 18-50 to use in crop mode based on your recommendation and it's great! Vignetting and distortion corrections work. AF is great (quiet as a mouse, I think it's actually totally silent). Build quality is good. Image looks good.
I'm going to use it as a family/holiday lens. Thanks for the tip! I never would have spotted it otherwise, as it's not a popular choice for Panasonic L mount. I think I got the only one in all of Ireland!

Rycote is a very well know and innovative company from U.K, known for delivering great and cost effective solutions for decades. If I had to started from somewhere, I would definitely start from Rycote.
I split one of those in 2 pieces, put them on my NX500 years and years ago, I do not even remember, maybe 4. They are still there. Experiences may vary greatly of course.
I strongly recommend a dedicated microphone, instead the camera built in mics if/when possible.

I have the Sennheseir and I believe is the best all around dSLR solution. You can have beautiful stereo ambient sound if you go ultra wide, and if you go closer you can beautifully follow a nice 2 person's conversation, and with a wider lens, is alright to go closer. It has 2 mini shotgun mics! Stereo, but with a reach..just brilliant idea..
If I want more reach (for videocentric cameras) I go here

This set is just amazingly brilliant and easily pro territory (and price).
I actually use it for drama on a boom pole and I just did a trailer for a very popular game show a few hours ago..
If I don't care at all, just the simplest of them all and the cheapest of them all. no battery, no much directionality, extremely small and light

Also the small/cheap recorders in general (I own several) don't make much attempt at isolating the mic capsules from the recorder body, so are terrible for handling noise (and pick up wind noise via body vibration, so you almost have to completely enclose them in a wind muff).

It looks like the Sennheiser MKE440 will give me the stereo sound I'm looking for. Before I pull the trigger on it, any advice for a smaller/cheaper stereo mic?

I had a go at EQ-ing the internal mic based on recording the same thing internally and with the Rode stereo mic. It's just not possible. The internal mic will always sound a bit crap even without wind noise. There are phasing issues that I can hear even before EQ-ing it.

Battery life only last 1hr with 4k.. so need either PD powerbank or charge battery often.
R7 battery life on the other hand last ages, R5 was on 2nd battery and R7 still on 1st battery when shooting the reception, both shooting 4k25p.
To me the weight saving alone is totally worth it, atm I m shoot 3 out of 6 days so far, the 277g weight saving make a difference to me as I m not as exhausted vs using R5.  So now I m tempted to get RS3 mini to have even more weight saving.

Just got the R8 today and use it for an Indian Ceremony, shot most of it in 4K50P and the heating indicator only goes up to 1 bar so that is not bad.
So much lighter vs the R5 on gimbal, I can felt the weight saving!

I dusted off my EOS-M today and loaded the new ML. It's feeling a lot more user-friendly than before. 2.8K with accurate monitor display? Heck yes. This is potentially an acceptable level of 'frustrating' and I might actually shoot something with it.

Hey Kisaha, I've been shooting full frame ML Raw on a Canon 5D Mark iii for the past 6 years, or so. I've also had a Sigma FP for about 6 months.

Yeah, this makes sense. Blackmagic offered a lot of features and a compelling image for the price.

    What FF are you shooting?
I work for a couple of production companies that still using the GH5 cameras coupled, usually, with the Olympus 12-100mm 4f. They do speciality TV episodes (kind of run and gun stuff) and both shows are very popular.
One production company considers moving to either GH6 or S5iiX, the other considers.. nothing at all! The cameras are good for the specific project, and their other projects are very big anyway, so they rent Arri or C300mkIII usually. I did a project with them recently using C70s also..
I have yet to see a GH6, which is strange, and that means that it hasn't sold a lot here in Greece. I know a lot of people that had both the GH5 and bought into BMP4K when first released, but now they have moved to BMP6K and abandon the m43 cameras altogether.
I am expecting a slow but steady sales figure for people having a lot of m43 glass and they do not care much to move to other formats, or are perfectly happy with their GH5 cameras anyway and will replace their old and beaten GH5 cameras, but for those, even the cheaper GH5ii maybe will be enough (and another source of sales leaking for the poor GH6..) or a less beaten used GH5 from all these sources that moving to S5ii cameras or other mounts..
All in all, is not 2017 anymore, and there are still GH5/GH5S/GH5mkII cameras to be sold out there while everyone has workhorse hybrid cameras that can bring bread to the table these days..

Just a solid camera overall. Better colors IMO than the lumix cameras, good auto focus, good 4k codec etc.
The DR is a stop or two less than the S1, but probably similar to the GH5s. A little bit worse in low light than the S1.
For me it's kind of like a GH5 with more solid color and auto focus and no need for a speedbooster. Also been using it with a ND filter lens adapter, so been digging that too. Mainly been living with a Sigma 18-35 on it or a Canon L 70-200.
Technically I should aways go for the S1 because of the better DR and low light, but I keep finding myself go for the R7 because of the user experience

This is true, they are a great value. And I’ve spoke various times about how great the Z6 image is when used with an external recorder. Get a cheap 1080p Prores recorder and get oversampled 10-bit log video. I’m pretty pleased with how the 8 bit internal held up in this piece, however, except at some times I noticed some break-up in the skin due to the 8 bit and the fact that I recorded it in a very flat profile. For the AROLL, I just had a friend hold up a simple 5-in-1 reflector to diffuse the sun.

Ofcourse! I just did a small friendly comment. I am glad that you didn't gave it more gravity than it should!
These new Nikon cameras (and lenses, depending the lens of course) are for me the best value for money options right now in the mirrorless world.
A lot of friends now use the 24-120mm for all around video with excellent results.
