Very true, I'd call it artificial detail to such oversharpening, even though speaking about the same anyway : )
But, while we can overcome that on post, adding blur, it is impossible to handle anything serious without manual exposure.
Let alone flickering among some other unwelcome oddities, really.

In any case, FILMiC PRO has introduced the possibility to disable it, so I believe any third party software can easily get it...

ASUS got a very interesting feature:

    Guess what?

Just looking for an Android app able to handle manual exposure going along the fast frame rate of 4K 120fps from ASUS 7 PRO hardware.
As well, disabling the 'Edge Enhancement' feature offering a more cinematic outcome such as FILMiC PRO or Cinema 4K apps for example.
However, there are limitations. Those third parties don't allow any competent 4K slowmotion on ASUS 7 PRO as happens with the proprietary software.
    Open Camera is open source.
Some features are available only on a few devices, as they may depend on hardware or camera features, the Android version, etc and definitely not on ASUS 7 PRO, unfortunately.

I wonder if Open Camera app wouldn't be viable to be directly adapted in order to address such needs?

Or what about a new app from scratch?

Is there anyone out there able to develop it in one or another route solution?
I believe there is a huge market just waiting for... Almost every Zenfone 7 PRO user taking advantage of this unique 4K 120fps feature would salute and buy this new arrival, I bet.

Without mention, one of the goodies of this cameraphone, the retractable/flip camera, is only available on the proprietary app. Why not on third parties? Is it feasible?

    Any takers?

RED Hydrogen had decent colour science.
Sony Xperia 1 II has the most natural image I've found so far.
The Chinese ones are all an inconsistent mess.
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is the best I've found. But of course the software side is crippled.
It's very frustrating. Nobody seems capable of going forwards in a good way. Apple have mucked up their image processing a bit too. Since the iPhone 11 Pro Max they have turned the digital look up a notch, more over sharpening, but real resolution not really going places.
I haven't found a reason to switch from my iPhone XS Max. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a nice sensor but in day to day use it hardly makes any difference. Only with the IBIS on manual settings in RAW does it stretch out a lead... Less noise, pin sharp image at slow shutter speeds in low light.
For my main phone I can't switch from Apple to Android especially not without Google Play Services on Huawei. So I stay with Apple for now and use the Mate 40 Pro as a camera only in second jacket pocket!!
    Is there GCam for it?

It's in-between the 1/1.2" and 1" on this chart, so practically 1" as near as makes no difference. Bit like Canon APS-C is still APS-C even when it is a 1.6x crop vs 1.5x crop.
How long before Micro Four Thirds sensor in a smartphone? 🙂

I am fully with you on this one : ) These smartphones "IT designers" are absolutely dumb, inept to understand what a device should be. I am done with so much silliness, ignorance, well, incompetence, I must say. They have no simply clue of the horse in their hands. They think they're dealing with some sort of poney or even a donkey :- )
For some GOOD reason, I've posted this one here and am still looking for:
That ASUS ZENFONE 7 PRO flip cam is one of the most useful tools I've ever shot with. Coupled to efficient 4K 120p would really be a dream. So? They have decided to cripple it without manual exposure! : (
    What else to say?

Somebody with a clue about photography needs to walk into the Chinese smartphone manufacturers and tell them how to do things.
In 2014 the Panasonic CM1 with large 1" sensor came along and there's been a 7 year wait for another 1" smartphone to add the latest computational photography image processing.
The Samsung ISOCELL GN2 in the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is finally it!
There's no doubt about the technical capabilities of this smartphone and that it's capable of some wonderful results (after a bit of grading) as well as 8K. Technically this sensor has every latest development - 50 megapixel, 8K, dual gain ISO readout (per pixel!), Quad Bayer, Dual Pixel Pro AF (split pixels horizontally as well as diagonally!) and more. The phone even has a Time of Flight sensor to assist AF in complete darkness.
So why does it look so shit?
DXOMark has the full run-down on the Mi 11 Ultra with sample photos. You'd expect with these specs, combining the enthusiast grade Sony RX100 size sensor with cutting edge AI and image processing that smartphone manufacturers would have taken the time to learn something about presentation and optics too.

I still have the ones kept somewhere else (but not in digital version) I didn't help myself to end investing with my student pocket money along those old 90s back to my law school years, when I was used to spend a couple of hours literally, reading at book store (not the library : D) once arrived and my few bucks were too short to afford it every single month then.
This sounds dreamlike now, by consequence. I think it's not easy to young people in digital age to have a picture what this means.

That's what I was thinking - about an 8:1 compression. Whatever this compression ratio is, I'd LOVE it if they brought it to 4k in the the C300 III, C200, and any other future 4k raw cameras. 8:1 is sort of the sweet spot for quality and file sizes. For 4k, that would probably be closer o 400-600mbps, which is the same or a bit more than All-I.

This is truly surprising as the compression ratio is more than any C camera from Canon. 8k RAW at 1.3 Gbits/s is very very good is basically in the same ballpark as 8:1 RED 8k RAW

Well, I follow your POV but let's not forget going with 5X the 24p rate, we have 376Mbps as 'regular' speed equivalent, so it's not that bad detail-wise also in order to avoid any potential introduction of nasty artifacts along your footage ; )
Without mention, you can always recode it : )
I'd firmly suggest this one, though:

Please don't derail the discussion. This is zero connected with yours. If I have 8K recording, I want to finish my master in the same resolution. This is nothing about delivery. Your battles don't fit.
Future proof can mean one or a couple of decades later. To each his own.

Is the use of Proxies too much of a hassle?

I understand you want to express your idea. Where you're going.
People are not formatted. You like your way. You use your 4k camera. Other people record 8k. For different reasons, not yours. It's useless to tell other people to do what we want to do. The world will not change because of your beliefs. Also useless because 8k doesn't cost thousands and thousands of dollars right now. We aren't all trying to follow hollywood. Lots of filmmakers in the world, you're just one of them.

You talk from your angle. Return. Business. There isn't one type of filmmaker. Your motivation is not mine. Your clients are not mine. Your product isn't mine. Etc, etc, etc. There are smartphones recording 8k right now. Your clients aren't expecting you will deliver to them in 8k. That part we both understand. The part that you don't understand is that your liking, your needs aren't mine. Vice versa. I am recording 8k right now. I want to have my masters in 8k. Again: your reasons aren't mine. I am not expecting they are. I imagine you too.

Yes, it is. Multi-million dollar Hollywood films don't need it. Different production values. Different gear. Etc. We cannot compare their cameras with ours. Our 1080p is far away of theirs. Our 8K is a way to improve our production value. Different targets too. We can shoot 8K today, why to end with a master below than that!?? Why not take advantage of a future proof?

That makes sense, most of my work is fast turnaround time sensitive footage like events, music videos, fashion shows, modeling videos, virtual tours, seasonal videos, small business promo video work, etc.  I'm known for fast turnarounds which helps me stand out in my area. I love shooting all day then finishing the edit that night while the experience and events of the day are still fresh on my mind. I typically shoot the full day's event or project, edit all night until I complete the rough edit (usually around 4AM the next morning), sleep for a few hours, then do the color grading, titles, fix the rough edges, etc.  There is no way I could do that waiting for proxies for every clip.

I definitely think its incredible how far PCs have come in such a short period of time and proxies let you use just about anything and still get editable footage, especially when it starts out highly compressed like H.264 and H.265.

    In doubt what's the best?
    A Hexa-core i7-9750H or Xeon E-2276M with the Quadro RTX 5000 16GB VRAM?
    Or Octa-core i7-10875H with a RTX 2080 Max-Q 8GB VRAM?
Or yet the Octa-Core Ryzen 7 3700X but with the RTX 2070 8GB VRAM?

LOL Indeed, there's not a single answer to take : )
Getting a machine for editing/grading/post-production depends a lot on software optimization and distinct parts of the hardware resources required to handle much different tasks :- )
Some of them work just fine and... anyhow awkwardly some under circumstances too, in fact.

I am now buying a couple of units of the ASUS Zenfone 7 Pro for 3D UHD capture at 120fps... go figure!
ASUS staff can only think I am crazy (I guess they actually do!) and my partner in crime who has already worked as Peter Greenaway stereographer in the past, other than supervising Godard's stuff, as for instance, is puzzled with my decision, so... What can I tell you more sideways? ; )
