@MountneerMan GH5 is a lot worst in the photo department, and a6500 is worst in most (ergonomics, battery life, terrible user interface, gimmick touch screen features, and a ton other) issues. The GH5 costs a lot more anyway. The usual deal now with the NX1s - that most people buy - are a NX1 with a 16-50S and a few more extras (external chargers, extra batteries, or whatever) that goes for around 1500$ or less. If you can find one for less than that, and/or in very good condition, then it is further away that any other top camera right now.
It is a dead system, it can be problematic, for some it is a great chance to own a very futuristic great camera for a little money. I wouldn't propose this camera light hearted to anyone, on the other hand it is just a great experience and for specific purposes, needs, and people, it can be a great bargain!
Personally, I will be waiting for the next generation, as the current ones not ticking all the boxes for my impression of a great hybrid APS-C camera. GH5 is a great, no-nonsense, camera and Panasonic right now is the most tempting, but I am an APS-C (S35) fun, and I am not changing any time soon.

Never shoot above 1600 ISO unless you must, avoid anything above 3200 at all cost you will destroy your image.
Change all settings in colours to R1.00 G0.95 B1.00 these are the colour settings because the cameras have green bias you will loose a lot of vibrant green colours. You can also do 0.90 with green works just fine too depends on what you prefer.
Also get the hack either Kinoseed which is easiest to install but slowest to initiate at startup or Vasile's hack which is ultra fast but does not have as many features for picture mode. It sort of help with the loss of information duo to high ISO use, but most importantly it reduces compression artefacts in footage greatly.

    Hello NX1 fan-club. Couple of months ago i published a video i shot completely at 120p 170MBs:
    https://youtu.be/UyRyZzM5do8
Some of you mentioned nice and clean picture and asked me about a Light i’ve used during the interview. I’ve used Aputure 582 mark2 (CRI-95) model, and UHD-30p 170MBs mode.
Now i decided to share with you guys, my experience with NX1 LIGHT-wise.
Aputure 582 mark2 (CRI-95) is a great module, compact and really powerful, but it can produce weird skin-tones paired with NX1. That’s why i purchased fluorescent light set with “OSRAM 950 ColorProof” tubes. OSRAM 950 ColorProof paired with NX1 produce much better skin-tones. There is my completed video-interview-style project, shot on NX1 paired with OSRAM tubes:
    https://youtu.be/uTI8i-FOuuM
As far as understand NX1 WhiteBalance algorithm, custom set and presets are just a general orientation for the camera. NX1 continue to fine tune WB during video-capture, even with custom WB set. From my experience, it is better to set one of the available WB-Presets, but Kelvin-WB and Custom-WB are the least used (because most inadequate). Now i think, NX1 sensor is really sensitive to the Light-spectrum. Any imperfections of the Light-Spectrum could potentially drive NX1 WB adjustments in a weird territory making skin-tones unpleasant.
Otherwise i have a set of three very inexpensive LED panels (big flat and cheep) from a Lerough-Merlen-Superstore (60x60 very flat, very soft light capable and easy to install light wight panels). Paired with NX1 works really good, unless i have to shot people. If i have to interview, OSRAM fluorescent light is definitely the way to go, caused by skin-tones reproduction.
Hope that could helps you guys Light-wise and WB set with NX1.

@SMGJohn @Kisaha thanks guys! I used the tried-and-true Normal gamma, saturation -4, sharpness -10, contrast -3, master black level at 15, which are still my favorite settings I've ever tried. It gives the footage a really sweet look, even right out-of-camera and before grading, though this video is probably  one of my most heavily colored projects.
Most of this was graded with DeLuts, though I do remember playing around with some of the RED gamma profiles in filmconvert. Lenses, mostly used sigma 18-35 and Rokinon 12mm and 85mm, though some of the really dreamy shots were with the Tokina-Anginaux 28-70 f/2.6-2.8.
The timelapses were actually shot with the 16-50pz lens.

Nice video Parker, did you grade or use in-camera colour profiles? I got to ask cause I seen some insane results from those colour profiles from my own use and other peoples results.

This is exactly how I use my NX500, the small, compact size and silent shutter make it an awesome stills camera, very easy to put on a small travel tripod and just shoot away on location. It is also my main vacation/walkaround stills camera for the same reason. The dynamic range of this camera is truly awesome; as long as you can protect the highlights, at low ISO's, the shadows can be raised 100% in Lightroom with no visible noise of any kind.
In this video here, one of my NX500 timelapses starts at 3:52, and there are two more starting at 5:08.

You can still get your hands on Samsung batteries all over the place, why do you need the third party ones? They are cheaper for a reason.
Stick to big brand names like Watson for example they put the proper real mAh capacity in their batteries, Chinese brands usually just put half of what they advertise.

"An extra step though it might be, transcoding to ProRes in that is 100% necessary for Mac users wanting to edit in Premiere but for Windows users the situation is worse. ProRes isn’t supported out of the box and most of the popular transcoding apps are freeware solutions like Rocky Mountain Movie Converter (*shudder*). They’re nowhere near the level EditReady is at. EditReady is the best $50 I’ve ever spent.".
    Hello Andrew,
(copy of nearly same message in another news comment about another Davinci Reolve 14 subject, i apologize)
I made editing on my Windows 10 laptop with Davinci Resolve 12.5 and i work with Prores video files without the need of Quicktime 7 Pro (obsolete now) .
I transcode mov files from Canon EOS with ClipToolz convert, a robust well fitted video trancoder to get HD Ready smallest files in Prores.
There is a free trial version od ClipToolz 4.0, and they have a bunch of high quality freewares !
It could be nice to correct your news for your followers working with Windows.

The sooner the better.  Nothing like doing simple editing in Premiere Pro and having the program stop in the middle of rendering, then the program closes itself.  PITA multiplied by about a million.
And Photoshop is starting to screw up too, I've had to restart that program when it just does what it wants to do.  At least I can save my work in Photoshop then restart.  Premiere Pro just stops and that's it.

It'd be great if e-shutter only could be enabled for nx1. I'm pretty sure it could do at least 24fps in that mode, at 4k or even 6k.

Surprisingly, Adobe Creative Suite 6 is still very powerful with a few plugins, specially in Premiere Pro I mean what the heck is new in the other Premiere Pro versions that impacts your editing flow?
Premiere Pro CS6 you just need a plugin that allows you to use LUT's and then you can just use Resolve to edit a LUT for each of your footage since Adobe decided to show us the finger when it came to SpeedGrade which is so SLOOW and so BUGGY, it infuriates me it even got released and Adobe's constant issues with OpenGL from time to time.
Adobe wants everyone to move over to the Cloud model, I could not handle it so I just got it the righteous way. But every release, its always so freaking buggy and it takes months for them to patch it, its so sad that this is the sort of business model they choose to run when they could have continued to add features to CS6 package and make it even better instead they gave the finger, told us "You want new features? You must subscribe to us on the cloud service instead" I have personally yet to see a CC version of the entire package that is stable, I also used the legal versions at work on Mac's and its equally buggy and slow specially when editing 4k footage, I do miss codec supports in Premiere Pro CS6 though but nothing you cannot technically get without plugins, there are also ways to get Premiere to take just about any format that exists with Windows Codecs.
At the end of the day, we are crippling ourselves by getting spoiled with new tiny little features that Adobe adds, and we do not want to move to anything else because they do not have it, but in reality there is ALWAYS a way to replicate it, and its funny they edited many masterpieces with such ancient and basic software in the past when the digital age just began. They did a lot of cool stuff with such basic stuff its really mind boggling.
Also its very sad that they cripple Camera RAW for older Photoshops like CS6 and CC 2013 just to force you to use their newer versions which are not very fast, I recommend just for fun try the old versions and notice the speed difference compared today, and you will scratch your head in how its possible that newer software based on same code has become slower for no apparent reason.

Back in December when I had to shell out cash to build a new machine to handle 4K I was in the same boat- really disappointed that the software was so slow and buggy. I slowly learned what made it crash (such as using Matte Soften in Ultra Key!), and they've slowly fixed it. I haven't gotten any nesting crashes lately, though sometimes I need to restart due to nesting bugs. Fortunately a restart fixes the bugs so far. I use Audition too, and also use Logic and Reaper (used to use SoundForge on Windows, and Pro tools long ago on OSX). For low-level waveform editing, what can Audition be replaced with? (don't say Audacity lol; not going back to Pro tools). What to replace Photoshop with? Especially what you can do with Camera Raw (I use it heavily for raw stills and also as a filter)? AE gets used from time to time too. Kinda hard to 100% bail on Adobe subscription until there are more options for replacement apps.

The NX1 has pretty terrible noise reduction going on above 1000/1600 ISO, no idea why they implemented it, its not there in the NX500 for some reasons and even high bitrate wont really solve your ISO issue on the NX1 although regarding the NX500 even though it has no noise reduction even at 4k or 1080p, when you start hitting high ISO specially above 3200ISO its just a mess really, avoid that.
And yes you can update the lenses with the custom hacked firmware, the lens firmware is separated from the camera itself, its two different things so it wont harm your camera or anything.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
All this camera talk over the past 2 years has made me realise that specs really does not mean a jack shit these days, as long as it shoots acceptable video its good enough, the NX1 not just shoots acceptable video it shoots SUPERB video, at least for me. The colour profiles are all like their own film stock and remember that film stocks did not have amazing dynamic range in the past either unless you specifically picked one that did.
I been spending more on audio equipment lately and as the professionals always use to say, audio is far more important than the image, I think the NX1 will do me very good for another 7 years or even more, its a little shame I cannot get that extra dynamic range or better ISO performance but you know, for what I spent on the camera which was under 2000 dollars was far less than the Canon 70D or the Sony A7s at the time which was very expensive cameras. The GH4 has smaller sensor so does the GH5 and the GH5 suffers a lot in low light situations still, you need really fast glass for it.
Sometimes one just cannot have it all I guess, shame that Samsung officially ended their camera line though, I hope the hacking continues there definitely FAR more potential on the Samsung cameras than the Canon ones in obtaining superb quality video, and even now the Magic Lantern guys have got 4k from their canon cameras, that is amazing if only we too could have RAW video from the Samsung, it would have solved the dynamic range issue and ISO issue. Heck even MJPEG would have, I sort of see why Canon went with MJPEG on the Canon 4DMIV.
I plan on hiring someone in the future to at least try to hack it for raw video, but until now I am just going to keep saving, it costs quite a lot to hire someone who know how to work their way around these things, in fact I wonder why we have not gotten together to start a funding page to hire a group to hack the camera to begin with, it would been so more effective, if everyone donated 10 dollars there still would have been quite a lot.

Samsung has created a camera too futuristic to be replaced soon.
The great definition, detail, ergonomics make NX1 an irreplaceable camera.
I hope that the Samsung resume soon to build camera, or that some manufacturers put on the market a new camera taking inspiration from NX1 camera, acquiring its technology and perhaps implementing it with a full frame sensor.
