@Jimmy G My two cents:) Dont buy a Ninja V. Your S1 does good enough without it. So either keep the S! and save your money or sell it and get a GH6. Like I said, my two cents. 🙂 Or keep the mighty S1, still buy a GH6 and compare the two.:)

Again, funny and saddening at the same time. @jgharding

Vintage camera, muaha! @BTM_Pix Funny and saddening thumbnail.

@webrunner5 Thanks for pointing out. I liked the young gentlemans approach. Footage not so much. Hard to believe that most of the GH6 footage looks worse than GH5 amateur clips. Andyax did the best so far for me. But that kid also made a Canon Ti shine like it was the hottest stuff in the universe, which it was back then to non GH2 users. 🙂 Edit: After glimpsing into the footage again, I must say i remembered it to be better. Right now I feel underwhelmed even by the colours from Andyax tests.

Cine D said that underexposure latitude is not far away from FF offerings such as A7iv. But A7iv also displays lotta NR. Hopefully some valid tests will show up. Most the stuff on youtube is not very revealing.

I have not seen convincing footage yet. Well, I have. Though convincing me rather of some dull image quality. I realize how great of an image taker the pocket 4k is regarding the cinematic quality of resolution, smoothness, texture and all these attributes of a great image. GH5 always has to be massaged in post. Good thing it is possible with digital diffusion. GH6 still intriguing to me due to form factor, battery life, features, ease of use, screen and so on. Image wise I don´t see it above a BMPCC4K. But having a BMPCC4k in the form factor of a GH6 is perfect. 2200 is still good money but worth it if the image is up to BMPCC4K quality. Integrity of colours is one thing the Pocket 6K was superiour to the 4K when underexposed strongly.

The 150mbit 10bit codecs on the GH5 and especially on the S series are very robust. It smokes the 240mbit codec from the FS7. It's no contest. The flavour on S1, S1H, S5 also does well compared to Braw being equally robust in the shadows. I was amazed by the Gh5 under good and moderately low light. S series have a powerhouse of a 10bit Long Gop codec. Panny is a big boss when it comes to codecs.

Darn! Sorry to hear. With mine the rear wheel has stopped functioning 3 years ago. They are well built but not rock solid inside I would figure. I imagine buying another one would be cheaper. But why not get figures on it? Time to buy a GX9 and test the 200mbit HD hack on it.:) The bigger crop in 4k might suck but would also mean more coverage for S16 C-mount lenses.

Yeah, uprezing, could need that.:) @mercer I got kinda lucky with a real 16mm cinema! zoom, not S16 unfortunately, so maybe not sooo lucky. It´s a 10-100 Zeiss F1.8 and it´s beautiful. Price was 450USD. I was exited when I connected the PL- mount. What an event, that satisfying fit of an old classic cinema zoom lens to that rock solid PL-mount of my F3. Now I got another reason to gives this beauty a try with that Zeiss beauty on it. Funky previewing though through the monitor with the much smaller image circle. 🙂

People with the desire for a fundamental but affordable update could buy a GH4 for 500 USD or a Lumix G9 with the free 10bit update for 800. These cameras are in the league and much more. @Django GH6 is rather in the league of A7s3 if specs deliver what they promise with that innovative screen, class leading IBIS and more, 5.7K60, minus the DOF from the FF sensor with the same lenses. Give it an affordable focal reducer for around 100USD and you are in S35 land. Wished they had given the GH6 a S35 sensor with the choice of a MFT crop

Great write up, kye! Veydra primes are pretty and much more expensive than the Meike lenses, unfortunately. Really cool looking beauties.

@projectwoofer If the S5 only had full HDMI, it would be the perfect camera for me. Crazy, that a thing like live cropping is not on the S1. I mean, it´s on my GX85. What the heck! Nah, you cannot turn off noise reduction in the A7iv. So they should be about the same regarding "honest" DR.
-
Refreshing does not fix that issue. So still have to log in. Guess I have to watch some nowness videos instead of camera nerdom pieces now(ness:). Noooot!:)
-
There is no live cropping on the S1. Crazy. @projectwoofer GH5 is so much more versatile when it comes to filming and crop modes. Owning it for almost two years and three months, I still have not warmed up with my S1 despite the potentially awesome image quality. Seems like the S5 is much more fun with its swivel screen and right handed mode dial operation. Anyhow, GH6 looks like a winner.

Holy crap. Vimeo starts to become unpleasant to use. I dislike to have to log in to watch certain so called unrated videos. Staff picks don´t fit my bill neither with their hipster oriented nowness videos. Social struggles don´t come in pretty corporate colours.

Pixel perfect 10 bit 422 up to 60p in 100mbit and 200mbit ALL-I flavours is pretty much not mostly 8bit, nor up to 30p with 150mbit and 400mbit 10bit codecs. 🙂 Why not push harder- true @webrunner5, regarding internal NDs and a S35 sensor behind the beautiful mft mount. All that for 2500 to 2700 USD and this camera would have been legendary from the start. Now it has to earn its reputation.

It´s said to be a great lens, version 2 and 3 supposely the best. Though some say all three are very close. I was hunting for low super low prices, since I´m a sucker for 35-70 zooms. But they go for around 70- 100 USD, which is great for what they are but not in the super low territory.:) @Marcio Kabke Pinheiro Not sure, but I even think it was a Minolta design adopted by Leica. I might be wrong and some research would clearify. 🙂

A fully rigged G2 with EVF and shoulderpad for 2000 USD? Go for it. Nuff said, besides the NDs, changeable mount, S16 crop, framerates, the Dual Gain sensor. All in a light and pretty sturdy body. I would go for it! G1 was awesome and used prices for full sets with cards, EVF, etc, are still higher than 2000 - 2500 USD, around 3500 to 4000 USD.

The 2x digital zoom is something I am really missing on my Lumix S1. There is only Full Sensor readout and then two crops for APS-C and a pixel to pixel readout. Last one is for HD only of course. 2x digital HD with potential for downsampling from 3k would have been pretty sweet, also for 4 to 3 formats. 2x crop works for my humble GX85 both in 16 to 9, 1 to 1 and 4 to 3 aspect ratios, latter two in 4K photomode. But none of that is in the S1. Menues are overkill too, despite missing this dear feature. Hope the GH6 has a menu structure rather like the GH5 but I doubt that Perfect HD, that´s also something the GH5 stands for and kye has been promoting a great deal. Something I really loved about the GH5 when using it.

The Canon L 20-35 F3.5 should be a hell of a lens by your account. It´s one I have had my eyes on for a while. @kye The 35-105 could have been a dream zoom lens for a full frame video camera. But the plasticy quality but foremost the problem with the bearings keep me from trying another one. Maybe I should keep my sample to start practicing some lens doctoring. But I think I am to nervous for stuff like that.:)

I can relate to that pretty well, Glenn. In six and a half years I have not built a set nor have I really thought about it. 🙂 Lenses are a hobby and recreational pleasures as well to me as being tools for my short films and corporate videos. So I am buying and trying them (ideally) and selling them if not satisfied (ideally:). I still have an used set of Tevidons of 10, 16, 25, 35, 50, 18- 90, 15- 150 which is as good as brandnew. Also have some doubles and roughed up 70ies. I was only able to rig the 35mm to my S1 in S35 mode. So trying out lenses to me is not as profane sometimes as it should be. I just bought a Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm Sonnar F3.5, which is supposed to be a beautiful image taker, as many 135s are indeed. My sample has a spot of fungus in it. So that cools the passion to test it down a bigger deal. The 35- 105 I put on ebay the same day I received because of the faulty focus. Still it is very relaxing to play with cameras and lenses it is a great pleasure. It gives me so much joy and good spirits. But my "collection" of lenses is pretty chaotic. 🙂

Thank you very much, just by comparing the two charts one can recognize so much! Great work! @hyalinejim Will try it out on my S1 footage.

Mechanically it is rather unthrilling. I also have the beautiful Canon FD 35-70 F4 because off your advice. It has a rattling lens element but still manages to focus and perform flawlessly. The 35-105 feels even more plasticy than the 35-70. Both have the classy classic FD look, creamy but with nice resolving power for motion picture images, nice contrast and great colour. Ergonomically and size wise they are both perfect in handy. Focus through on the 35- 105 is very long though. Unfortunately not only the 35- 70 but also the 35- 105 suffer from dissolved rubber material of the bearings after a period of time. Handling wise it would be much more comfortable than the impressive mechanical marvel which the Konica 35- 100 F2.8 is. The Konica is as varifocal as it was constructed to be. The focus plane changes by a huge amount when focal length changes. So a slight change in focal lenght has a much more effect on the focus plan than on the Canon. The Konica does not seem like a run and gun lens. Testing the handling before a filmshoot is highly recommended.

S1 (so S5 and S1H) gives me incredible low light quality. Never had FPN but never underexpose by 5 stops in lowlight. 🙂 I underexposed a good deal and recovery from the Long Gop codec was spectacular to me. Still, the GH6 looks extremely tempting to me. What I also love is to have the mode dial at the right hand where the shutter button / record button is located. Whereas for my S1 I have to reacht left for the mode dial. My little GX85 has it on the right side and it just feels right there for a hybrid. 4K 50p 10bit 422 Long Gop and All-I on the GH6 with juicy bitrates are very tempting indeed. ISO 6400 give more detail than the GH5s as shown in Jordands comparison with the SH1. If I was in the position to buy a system camera for video I would go for the GH6. Actually I would wait a bit to see the footage coming out of it. If the digital edgy sharpness of the GH5 is gone it would be a no brainer for me if buying a new camera. I just don´t buy new cameras usually though.:) Kye in a BTS shot is quiet a sight.:) @kye
