Marco Bentz reacted to Kino in Kinefinity Terra is now shipping!
From the Kinefinity owners I've read about or heard from, it seems that they have excellent customer service. They are also an honest company and tell their customers the truth, which is a great relief after what has happened with that other budget camera manufacturer. Distribution issues aside, I have much more faith in Kinefinity than any other camera manufacturer in that price range and I'm sure the 5K version will be along shortly. The Apple ProRes certification is also really difficult to obtain, so maybe they will push that to a future firmware update.
Of course, everyone has to make a decision that meets his or her needs, budget, and production time constraints. If you require a camera right away, well then the Terra 5K is obviously not for you. In my case, I'm sitting on the Scarlet-W order/deposit whose allocation date is unknown but likely in early 2017 at the slow rate that Dragon production is going these days. This is despite the fact that I ordered months ago.
In which case, the Terra 5K is not a bad proposition, considering that the only other (new) 5K camera in this market is going to require the same kind of waiting period or more if you ordered one today.

Nice camera shape with the new battery. Nice package, ergonomic, modular ... Curious to see some footage from the  6K but especially from the 5k ...!

Its shape reminds me of a xenomorph's head, but not in a good way.
I'm sure this will be a great camera to work with, shoot great images, do the job in many ways, etc, but as with all Canon cameras, the pricing and specs vs. that of its competitors just seem very underwhelming. If I had that sort of money ready to spend, I would choose an Amira

Yeah, this sounds like hype. This is nothing more than wishful thinking until panasonic make an official announcement. Might as well claim it will do 8k 12bit 444 @ 240 fps and be priced at $1499. That's not happening either.

That doesnt make sense...there is no "30fps photo", and it wouldnt do 30 single photos even for a short burst because...thats called video.
These settings are so over the top, you might as well include "If you buy the GH5, you'll get a new car, for free!".
Heres what I think will likely happen, 1080p @ 120fps, 4K @ 60fps (with noticeable rolling shutter), probably 8 bit 4:2:2, I'd love 10 bit, but I dont think we'll have that much. Anyway, when is this thing being announced?

Yeah, delays are to be expected, but I have not forgotten the black sun incident... didn't they just throw in the towel on that one? Or the magenta cast issue. BM is why I'm holding off on any purchase of the Terra until the reviews are in. I need real user feedback before I'm convinced. I done with being a guinea pig.

Just because I'm curious, I did a bit of digging into how much the total cost would be practically speaking. As we all know the body itself is merely the start of the costs!

A common big big cost with these professional cameras is memory, Arri Alexa Classic uses SxS cards. Even the oldest SxS cards secondhand are "cheap" but very expensive if you're used to SD card pricing! And older SxS cards are no good in an Arri Alexa as they can't handle the full capabilities of the Arri Alexa Classic of 2K 4:3 ProRes 444:
    https://www.arri.com/fileadmin/media/arri.com/camera/Digital_Cameras/Camera_Comparison/SUP_11_Data_Rates_ALEXA_Classic_and_XT.pdf
But you probably wouldn't be buying a 4:3 version, rather the 16:9 version which would tend to be cheaper. In that case, the data rate is lower, might be able to get away with the older SxS cards? (even I have a couple, came along for free with my Sony F3! However.... an Arri Alexa would need several more! As you'd be filling them up too fast)
But it just the target rate listed in that PDF, and not the max rate. Thus these older SxS cards could not work if they get maxed out, but... this adapter for SxS cards using cheap SD cards (such as any of the many fast SD cards many of us have for our BMPCCs!) can do up to 480MB/s, which gives a bit more head room.
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/786662-REG/Sonnet_SD_SXS_E34_SDHC_Adapter_for_SxS.html
However... not much more head room! So if that isn't enough, can always get this instead:
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/840666-REG/Sony_QDA_EX1_SC1_XQD_ExpressCard_Adapter.html

Yes, it is XQD cards which are much more expensive than SD cards!  But XQD cards are heaps heaps cheaper than SxS Pro cards!! :-D Plus XQD cards have came down in price a lot lately, and I expect XQD to drop even more in price as various more affordable cameras come to market that use XQD (FS5/D500/D5/etc).
They're already more affordable than what we've paid for SD cards in the very recent past (I paid more for my BMPCC cards when I bought them):
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1261721-REG/sony_qdg128e_j_128gb_xqd_g_e_memory_card.html
And you can be sure these XQD cards are way way faster than needed for 2K ProRes 444.
They've been tested in the Sony F5/F55 (which also uses SxS cards, and needs very fast cards):
    http://www.hingsberg.com/index.php/2013/12/xqd-cards-for-sony-f5-f55/
Thus that is media "solved" in an affordable way! Thousands saved here.

However the really big sticking point is lenses! Even "cheap" PL lenses can cost a fortune.  And if one of us was to be mad enough to buy an Arri Alexa, we sadly might not have anything left over to buy PL lenses..... could we use our existing lenses? A Nikon F mount would be ideal in my eyes, and I've done some digging but failed to turn up anything There might maybe exist a very rare copy or two of Arri Alexas that have been modded (Panavised Alexas are the obvious more common example), but basically it seems not to be an option for us. Arri Amira & Mini do have common options for adapters to use Nikon F mount lenses and other options, but of course those are much *much* more recent cameras and would cost a lot more to buy either an Amira or Mini!
So hmmmm.... what to do?? Seems any Arri Alexa purchase would require also getting a set of Sony CineAlta PL / XEEN / PL modded stills lenses (such as GL Optics) / SLR Magic PL / RED lenses on the "cheap" to use with the camera, which a working set could easily run up to another ten thousand give or take a few thousand either side.

Either that or wait for an Amira or Mini to fall down in price far enough to become "affordable", which would be a very looooong wait indeed!

Edit: hmmmm..... I stumbled across this, but any more info is sadly lacking! But just maybe maaaaybe....  does an aftermarket Nikon F mount for the Arri Alexa Classic exist that can be added on by the user??
    https://web.archive.org/web/20120321192849/http://www.hotrodcameras.com/?p=3728
    Then I found this:
    http://cinescopophilia.com/hot-rod-cameras-2012-roadmap-includes-nikoncine-alexa-mount/
But now the trail runs cold :-/

If this can be found then it would shave thousands and thousands of dollars off the total outlay cost for a DSLR shooter to step up and buy a secondhand Arri Alexa Classic!

Edit 2: Hooray!!! Have found now THE ANSWER!! This mod exists:
    http://www.leitax.com/conversion/Cine/Alexa/index.html
    Can buy it here:

Marco Bentz reacted to Kurtisso in Red Dragon? Anyone?
That's why sometimes to the client/producer my KineMAX is like an Arri Alexa (can shoot 16 stops DR at 3K in raw with beautiful digital grain, colour and highlight rolloff) and sometimes it is like a RED Dragon (4K compressed raw high frame rates and 6k acquisition in a smaller, modular body).
Camera choice for me starts with what do I want to achieve given the concept for the work, can I achieve this with the current tools I own (or do I have to hire) while considering budget generally, and then how do I communicate this to client/producer/director etc... for which if I have to I will put together a combination of test footage/previous work with a bit of a sample look.

I know a lot of DPs who own a mini and have already paid it off.  They just don't brag about it.
Reduser regulars except for my friend Nick are their own brand of "interesting" folks.
Nearly everyone in the LA and NYC commercial scene own or use the Alexa almost exclusively.  I don't know many DPs who would chose to rent a red over an alexa mini.
Before, red dragon was going strong because it was small and lightweight.  that all changed with the Amira and then definitely with the mini.
Red is pretty much, in my mind, over.  Unless Mr Jinnard really does introduce "the next big thing" - which I doubt.
C300ii definitely looks interesting at its price.
Red was really attractive to producers 5 years ago.
Now, all they want is the Alexa.
But you can easily convince a producer to use your camera if you show them the work you do on it and can explain to them why it's a better choice for the project.  If the producer doesn't listen to you, they aren't being a smart producer.

You are applying the subjective connotation of negativity, when in fact there is no intrinsic link to negativity in the definition or theory of scepticism itself.

Being sceptical in the face of the unknown is often understandable but should not be considered as informed or even an intelligent opinion on anything. Until the facts are known, It is no less value than speculation. It is true that many tech giants would not dream to let a pre-release product hit the press without it in immaculate, production ready apperance, with every single aspect being identical to the final shipping model. But this company is not a giant and is still relatively 'unknown' to the masses even though they have been shipping working cameras for a few years to many happy customers. I think the issue that a few people may have is 'burnt finger syndrome' - where it's easy to identify a less familiar company  (or even better a 'foreign' company) that reveals a promise that many would assume is too good to be true, and are looking at the first sign to pick things apart. It's understandable to a certain degree, but remember this company has a track record of delivering cameras within a couple of months (not several months) of them being announced. This time of year when NAB is buzzing is where everything is a bombardment of crap to process all at once, having any solid knowledge or informed opinion on anything until anything actually ships is like listening to a group of old women gossiping. Let the dust settle, keep a healthy open mind, make an informed opinion before thinking to put some serious dough down on ordering anything expensive.

This is all very subjective, but the reason I'm excited about future Kine cameras is that to me the images coming out of the Kine sensors all have a nice matte like characteristic as opposed to the glossy feel of a lot of modern cameras. Feels very organic and cinematic. I know those words get thrown around a lot, sometimes to the point of wanting to claw your eyes out sometimes, but I can't think of any other way to describe it.

The Mini 4.6k looks more modern to me. Whether that's good or bad is subjective.
The Terra has many benefits over the Ursa Mini 4.6k too - such as higher resolutions, higher FPS, much smaller, much lighter, much more modular, switchable shutter (the irony!), can be speed boosted, mount changeable, can be powered with smaller Sony batteries, SSD's......
If the image quality is up there with the Ursa Mini 4.6k, which I believe it will be (seeing previous footage from other models) - it's almost a no-brainer for many cinematic shooters.
