Sekhar got a reaction from JGlimmer in Samsung nx1 new firmware 1.31
I don't know if this was in earlier firmware versions too, but if you remove the battery some settings are getting lost in 1.30. I noticed it with gamma setting: if you set your gamma as DR and customize it (e.g., set sharpness to -10), then after your remove/add battery the setting remains in DR but the customization goes away (in this case sharpness gets reset to 0). So till we get a fix, watch out when replacing battery. If you guys notice any other setting getting reset, please post here.

And a pan to check the dynamic range, also from Indian Canyons. I shot this handheld, so stabilized it in post, but it's otherwise untouched. I don't believe there is any change to DR in 1.30.

Yes, DR is independent of sharpness, so you'll need to set sharpness separately. If you zoom in, you will see artifacts at the edges if you shoot at sharpness 0, and that goes away at -10 (it did in my tests anyway). You can always sharpen in post if you wish, but with the 4K image out of NX1, I don't see any need unless you crop.
Also, AFAIK sharpening in camera increases its information content, which stresses the encoder because there's more info (spurious, but still more) to encode within the same bandwidth. So, low sharpness will help improve final IQ that way as well.

Charts are great for stills, but in video the image is continuously changing, with usually varying lighting. E.g., if a camera pans, are you going to put your chart in beginning of the pan or the end? Unless your lighting is relatively uniform, charts are kind of useless IMO. Obviously you'd typically want to color balance while recording, but it'll almost always be necessary to eye-ball the shot as you correct in post, which is really simple anyway unless the recording format makes it hard. Which brings us to the necessity to record in a way that allows for flexibility in grading (RAW, log, 10/12 bit, etc.).

Vimeo has a promo for their Pro subscription (which is $199/year), where they're giving away $150 in B&H gift card if you get it by 5/17. Any opinions on Vimeo and specifically Pro? I'm thinking on jumping on this, mainly to host 4K videos, I understand Vimeo is now supporting 4K streaming for their Pro members.

I actually happen to agree with this approach (being bold/frank). Yes, NFS has advertorials as articles, as do others actually: even DP Review with its oddball intro XC10 article and the follow-up puff-piece interview. AFAIK EOSHD was the only one going against the grain on a limb when the rest were kissing up (circa NAB  time, now there are more that have come around). Please stay this way, we need a bold and independent voice in this age of megacorps and fawning reviews.

The original post, from the very beginning, suffered from fuzzy logic ( excuse the pun ). Fuzzy brought in examples of 2D and 3D animation, pointing to limits of cameras as filmmaking tools, essentially finding fault with this site for not being an animation resource. He then criticized the focus on technical achievement, while citing animation examples that required incredible technical skill to bring to life. ( If you think creating emotion through stick figures is low-fi you completely misunderstand how difficult it is to master natural pacing and timing in animation. These creators spent many years honing their 2D / 3D technical craft before being able to create their works. )
The logic of the original post was self-contradictory and incorrect from the very beginning.

OP asked why we tend to have threads on tech rather than art. Tech discussions are based on fact; art discussions are based on opinion. Consequently (as this thread is already showing), art threads invariably degenerate into attacking the straw man, where even reasoned opinions are countered by making an extreme and absurd interpretation of them. If one can shoot a Star Wars movie on T2i today that competes with "Gravity," great.

While it may be Andrew's site with his articles on the frontpage/blog, the rest of the threads on the forum its content is decided by the userbase mostly.
So... if you're coming across a lot of tech stuff, that's mainly because that is what the userbase is into. That doesn't mean it's just a place for techies. The content on the forum isn't dictated by Andrew. I see it as an open platform where you decide what's the topic of the day. So if you feel like there's too little stuff going on in the artistic/creative direction, blame yourself, it's up to you to do something about it.
Although I prefer when it's actually about something fresh and useful that benefits and motivates everyone, rather than the old flamewar debate that the best camera is the one you have with you, that you can enter a festival with something shot on an iPhone, that Kendy does great things with the T2i and that content is king. Yeah yeah, we've been over that before, heard it a thousand times, we even agree, we know. But imho there's nothing wrong with discussing the tools that make filmmaking possible. Cameras, lenses, lights, mics/recorders, monitors, stabilizers, et cetera. You can go full nerdgasm on any of these things by the way, not just camera bodies. But the way I see it most just want to explore new territories and open up new creative possibilities that allow them to create what they have envisioned. Nothing wrong with that. And in the end we all choose our own paths. You choose yours, let others choose theirs. Maybe you're oozing creativity and ideas, but are limited by the execution of things. New gear can enable you to move forward, to take it to the next level. Of course if you haven't even unlocked the full potential of your current gear, it's questionable if you really need that new bright shiny toy. But hey, as long as they don't ruin themselves financially, let them buy that RED Weapon Dragon or whatever and let 'em find out the hard way that it takes more then just buying stuff, right?
Anyways. To end on a cool note, I like to share a video I came across the other day...

Yeah, if you dont need them now you can always wait, while for those who do either one of them can do the job, and by the time 32bit comes out you already master the gimbal compare to those who still wait, and you gonna beat them since your brain and body knows how to "fly" those well, and you will know which pid works and what not.

I love me some up-tempo pacing (I have the attention span of a 6-year-old), so I didn't mind it, really. Also, a lot of these cuts seemed motivated by the music. Now at first I was like: oh no, this is one of these pretentious hipster vids with random all-over-the-place stuff just for the sake of it. But then after a few seconds the track picked up. The fragment visuals led up to the establishing shot of the street. Then showing the girls having fun on their night out in the city, playing pool, singing, dancing, chatting, laughing. Just a good time.
Visually I just found it to have very pleasing colors and light. Very nice depth of field and softness, together with the motion and grain it felt very filmlike and organic. I absolutely adored the look in the screencap below. Very dreamy, nice silky milky blacks. Nice bokeh going on. If you don't get that. Well, I guess everyone's got different taste. Would be boring if we'd all be the same!

About the fuzz and cuts with no clear purpose... you could also interpret it as 'the next day's memory of last night'. When you were out the night before, the next day you probably remember bits and pieces, but not everything is quite as clear. So in a way, you could interpret the way the footage is being presented to us as not an in-the-moment documentation, but more of a dreamy memory flashing by before the viewer's eyes.
It was a fashion piece. I assume the bags were the actual main characters in this and incorporated in such way. Together with the bracelets they really stood out with their vibrant colors.
So, I think this approach has paid off quite nicely. It works for me atleast. It shows the power of the tools used and Ed's creative and artistic side to set a certain mood. Now, you might not want (and you shouldn't want) to go with this look for everything you shoot. But just as a camera is a tool, so are different grades, cuts and grains...

Yep. I got the NX1 a week back and immediately happened to cover the LA MDA Muscle Walk. Lot of footage, but it was pretty simple/easy to transcode to ProRes on my Windows machine. I used FFmpeg, which was fast (the app was Rocky Mountains, check it out especially if you want to easily do H.265->ProRes on Windows). The nice thing with this workflow is that once you're done with your edit, you can delete all the large ProRes files and archive the H.265 files, which are really small. Besides, even with H.264 you'd want to transcode to something that's more edit friendly anyway, so it isn't that different with H.265.
