That is an odd thing to say in a discussion forum, where we should be sharing views/opinions without fear of derision/ridicule. Remember, it is also just your opinion that "the makers of this production are several orders of magnitude above (his) current artistic skill level," not a consensus. Even if it were, if we're to critique someone/something only if everybody agrees we're better (and therefore qualified to critique), then nothing constructive would ever happen.

Dvxuser is a great "informative" site , but you defitnely cannot form an opinion there without being warned/banned or both. If you don't like someones project the mods encourage you to not even say anything, which imo leads to a "political" website where one can never say things the way they are. Same goes for Reduser and Bmcuser , but it all makes sense since they are more than likely owned by the same people.
EosHD definitely gives you the freedom to speak and that's one of the main reason I really like this site. If my work isn't good and someone mentions it, that's good. Now if I were on Dvxuser everyone would not reply or people would say they loved it, that's fake to me and something that imo doesn't help the community......

I guess creatively, the weird "stars-in-a-day-scene" look does help the alien planet SF story line, but in my (cynical) opinion the real motivation for shooting in moonlight was for marketing/buzz reasons. I mean, isn't that why we're even talking about this short? And people discussing low light and A7s will likely cite this as an example, at least in the near future. Clever. Looked a bit too fuzzy though, probably from heavy noise reduction. Acting seemed better than what we see in shorts.

Guys, thanks so much for all the input. Here's my summary of what look like the best settings (based on input here/elsewhere and my little experiments):
Sharpness: -10, I think everyone agrees with -10, default is too sharp. Gamma: DR. Definitely wider than Normal, probably best till we get a log option. Contrast: -5. Many like it. Had lowest banding (vs. 0 and -10) in my test scene. Highs can look weird in some scenes though. Smart Range+: Off. I have no idea what this does. Per the Samsung manual, it "corrects for the loss of bright detail." Master Black Level: 0. Many recommend +10, but in my testing it's just lifting the levels, so useful only when not planning on post work. Luminance Level: 0-255. Some like 16-235, but that too squishes the waveform - would help when using directly out of the camera however. Please let me know if I'm factually off base on any of these here.

Where did you see talk of everything at 0 in the thread? Unfortunately I can't open the attachment links, they seem to be only for subscribed users. When I set sharpness to 0, I saw artifacts at the edges when blown up, -10 looked more natural/organic. You're not seeing any issues? Other than that and contrast at -5, I've found the same as you did.

Yes, DR is independent of sharpness, so you'll need to set sharpness separately. If you zoom in, you will see artifacts at the edges if you shoot at sharpness 0, and that goes away at -10 (it did in my tests anyway). You can always sharpen in post if you wish, but with the 4K image out of NX1, I don't see any need unless you crop.
Also, AFAIK sharpening in camera increases its information content, which stresses the encoder because there's more info (spurious, but still more) to encode within the same bandwidth. So, low sharpness will help improve final IQ that way as well.

Yes, contrast seems to be best at -5, see some test shots on this, along with other thoughts/conclusions in the NX1 DR settings thread. Basically: DR gamma, sharpness -10, contrast -5.
I'm not sure why you'd want to increase the black level. I can see it helping if you're delivering straight out of the camera, but otherwise I see it as simply wasting the low end of the encoding range.

99% of the top end film industry still uses s35. Perhaps more. A few people like Nolan experiment here and there, but that hardly shows a seismic shift towards large sensor.

You referring to color science or bit depth? From what I've seen the nx has great color science.

OK, I don't quite get the excitement here and on other forums. Isn't NX1 at $1,500 already doing much of what a7RII is doing at $3,200? Yes, a7RII has stuff like log and higher MP stills, but then only NX1 has 120fps 1080p. I take it the jubilation is over FF vs Super 35? Doesn't quite seem worth the over 2x price difference, especially for video. I'm sure there's more, can't wait to see hands-on reviews.

4k content will drive sales of 4k TVs, monitors, mobile devices. Do Sony, Samsung and Panasonic make any of this hardware? If so it makes perfect sense to drive sales by providing content creators with affordable ways to produce content.

Looks great. Really pleasing, filmic, and interesting visuals. Congrats! Is this meant to be a profile on this person or the temple? Felt more like the former. Also, would have helped to use sounds/music of the temple, I didnt quite feel the ambience. Not too sure about the music either.

Looks like any other "freemium" model to me that's meant to upsell/crosssell. There are tons of examples all over, most obviously in the free or super-cheap "educational" and the "personal" versions when it comes to creative tools. This model would especially work for tools like this as they take time to learn/perfect, which builds an automatic lock-in and loyalty. E.g., up and coming filmmakers (of which there are a ton) will try it, hopefully like it, preach/sell it (free word of mouth and social marketing), switch to the $$$ paid version themselves when they turn pro, buy/promote related products like the BMC cameras, etc.

Seriously, are we in high school? You need to chill, Wolf, and treat the forum members with respect. In all fairness, Ebrahim did say "just really bad unless you spend serious serious fixing time" right at the outset, so clearly his issue is with the colors coming out of the camera and how hard it is to fix them in post. If you don't agree with that, please give an example, clearly explaining what was done in post (you need to be specific, just saying it's easy isn't enough). We're all trying to learn here, and if you can prove the A7s detractors wrong, great! But let's please be civil.

I agree with you Ebrahim Saadawi. I have read many DoPs saying how imprecise the colors on the A7S are hphhow difficult it is to get skin tones precisely. Almost every camera ever made can get skintones right if one gets an expert solely for matching skin tones. The ease of doing it is what matters.

Also the condescending tone on the forum seems to be spreading like a disease from one leper to another. I don't know which forum seems to have spread the vitriolic around here, but, suddenly disagreements aren't talen too lightly around here. Next I am guessing will be cuss words, and then bronx like brawls.

These are both great, but these are both also freeform edits, and very stylized… What I find impressive with the canon cameras, is the ability to very easy produce a very neutral and well balanced image with little effort.
We all know you can get nice results from any camera, but the Sony cameras are just more difficult to work with. I have worked with the Fs700 quite a bit, and that camera is a real love hate. The high speed footage is amazing, but the colors and highlight clipping that happens is very frustrating.

I don't know if this was in earlier firmware versions too, but if you remove the battery some settings are getting lost in 1.30. I noticed it with gamma setting: if you set your gamma as DR and customize it (e.g., set sharpness to -10), then after your remove/add battery the setting remains in DR but the customization goes away (in this case sharpness gets reset to 0). So till we get a fix, watch out when replacing battery. If you guys notice any other setting getting reset, please post here.
