docmoore reacted to Andrew Reid in Apple talk dramatic 2018 Mac Pro update amidst multiple controversies
    I do.
A workflow is not just about one app. It's about the whole ecosystem.
The user interface stability and design is also important and an area where Windows doesn't meet my needs yet. It's flakey.
People who aren't familiar with Mac OS tend to think it has a dumbed down UI but actually it has huge depth and most importantly enforces a CONSISTENCY across all your apps, rather than the wild-west of Windows where the basic UI conventions are scatter-dash and random across the board.
Unix is also a fundamentally more secure and efficient core technology than Windows, and it evolved from NEXTSTEP which was more advanced as well, along with better memory management and better drivers which aren't as bloated and don't need to be constantly updated (with the risks of something breaking when you do). The drivers on Mac machines only need to work with a small subset of hardware chips whereas on Windows they need to support bloody everything ever made!
Apple has also been careful to strip away the legacy bloat in their OS, whereas Windows still clings to ancient things at the core of it.

it seemed a bit sterile. I know you will make it sing.

The Scarlet-W looks like the best camera they have made in a while.
Again, don't preorder.  Wait for it to come out.  Do tests.  Rent it.  Use it against other cameras.  Then decide.
Pre-order a $10,000-$20,000 piece of kit is perhaps the dumbest thing in the world to do.
Find out what surprises can happen with their camera.  How it handles dynamic range, etc etc.  How its fan works - all that stuff.
    Early adopters always get burned.
I ususally wait a year after the camera is out to buy it.  And in the meantime rent it for gigs and test it.

The lens ... VC 35 1.4 SC is an older design with single coating on the element to give it a fairly low contrast look .... the video was shot at F4 and a lot of the softness is due to the restricted DOF with the FF sensor. Yes the sensor is stellar for single photos and loses a bit as video but the dynamic range persists. I added no sharpening in post as I thought that the look seemed fairly organic and did not border on the brittle look that reflects oversharp artifacts.
This was a 10 minute deal after 3 straight days of constant rain and just a trial of the camera in video mode.
I hope to put my Wooden Camera cage on it in order to mount it to my video tripod and use a few different lenses ... 55 and 85 Otus and Rich's DSO FF 38 58 88 for sharpness and flare effects. I am a bit disappointed that I do not have a HDMI out on the camera although I was surprised at how sensitive the internal mic is.
I may get a chance to try single shot photos into film and am sure that the native resolution of the sensor will be better seen there.

    Thanks,

In a world where we have so much horrible light in our environment (low quality led lights, nasty discharge bulbs, energy saving, neon etc), monochrome is a escape from it all.  I think with the way available light night time scenes look nowadays, I'd probably discard the colour vision from my eyes during night time all together.  it looks better in b+w imo

No it is a FF mono sensor without a Bayer array ... in the M Type 246 a CMOS 24 mp sensor ... no HDMI on camera so internal
capture to SD card. Much better than I hoped for ... internal mono mic but very sensitive ... you can add a stereo mic to the hotshoe
but I will probably run an external recorder and sync when it is critical.
My next test will be with Zeiss Oti lenses on adapters .

    docmoore got a reaction from User in Canon C100 MkII 50Hz/ 60Hz - Can't Shoot 23.98 on 50Hz - Why?
Shooting 23.98 in a country with 50hz power supply will not work as you have discovered if there is any light powered by the 50hz mains ....
just the small shift to 25 eliminates the flickering. Conforming after the fact will not eliminate the flicker as it has been captured and I assume
will still show up ... Should you shoot outside with daylight any standard will work. I assume that shutter angle C-scan or any other approach
will leave you with a residual flicker .... now shooting at 25 and conforming to 23.98 would allow you to capture non-flickering video and render it
cleanly. The standards were set through the discovery of the problem and the solution is fairly set ... as neither the EU nor the American system will
conform to the other system's standard.

I have not looked for that function ... I just drop both on the timeline in Premiere and it is seamless...
It does error correction sampling and has the ability to offload to more than one drive as a backup ... very fast.
If I get a chance I will dig into it a bit more to look at whether I can discern a way to enable it.

Yes C - Log raises the blacks ... and if you have underexposed the noise will be more prominent.
However when you grade with a decent S curve a lot of that should disappear ... unless you are
using the forever prominent milk filter.....
C100 and Mk II have a fabulous low noise high iso sensor ... if you underexpose and have to raise the exposure in post
you get noise ... but it is not objectionable and most describe it as film like ... since I always shot ISO 25 emulsions I
am not sure that I get it....
This camera is great in low light ... and better in good light or lit environs.
Everyone has issues with cameras these days ... a bit more technique and the majority of them
    would be non-issues.

    Ibrahim and User

I had the 1Dx and loved it ....
Now the C100 Mk II ... I use it without the handle with ... mainly manual focus Nikon mount lenses ... with a Wooden Camera quick release for
video tripod use ... it is smaller and much more ergonomically friendly than any DSLR. I passed on the Leica S007 with 4K gave up my Sony A7s
... color issues and love the files from the C100 Mk II.

Truth be told ... the day the Canon 1Dc II arrives your investment is toast. No one will give you what you paid for it ... 1000 exposures is nothing
but ask yourself why are they selling it.

Biggest problem with the C100 is the ability to capture amazing amount of file with minimal effort ... so you need a big computer to deal with
4K files but with the C100 you will have 10 times the video in focus and correct exposure to deal with ... without thinking about it. Those NDs
are to die for ISO starting at 850 ... unlimited higher range. My sense is that glass is golden and sensors will improve... buy what will work camera wise and
invest in the best lenses you can find. They rarely depreciate like the cameras. Makes more sense to me to buy a C100 and a discounted BMPC 4k
for when you just have to say I got more real estate than I know what to do with....

This video convinced me that the original C100 and the Mk II were sufficient ...

Fair enough. The 85mm vs 50/55mm debate has been going on for 6 decades. It really is a tough call.
That is true about 6K, however, the Otus line (glass elements) take this line to another level above and beyond the Milvus.
Bob, the Milvus lenses are full frame. I think they look great but for pure performance the full frame Otus (near Master Prime level which is S35) is superior. Now if I could figure out what focal length..and here comes the 28mm at the end of the month.

So Otus line, according to Ming Thein who just spent time at Zeiss for the Milvus unveiling, is designed by the group responsible for the Master Prime
    lenses.....

$4K looks a bargain compared to $14 or $28K for the cine lenses ... and you don't need a sherpa or four assistants to carry your gear.

As he points out these lenses should be viewed as lifelong acquisitions ... amortize them over 20 years ... drop a Starbuck's latte a day and they are paid for in three years each ... at the end of 20 years they will still have a value ...

I have lost a lot of value over the recent years in depreciation of digital camera bodies ... almost none in decent lenses.
