Hm... I'll have to take a look at that. Only got my F3 a couple months ago and haven't hooked it up to an external recorder yet. How do you like the video assist on it?

I really like it. Nice compact recorder. Nice UI. I bought a couple batteries that run d-tap out, so I can run everything off one sony battery. You need to run that camera with a recorder. Seriously beautiful clean images.

You don't just use the S&Q control? And using shutter angle keeps everything scaled to your frame rate, so that's what I use: 144° when flicker is a factor, 180° when it's not.

That's a good idea... I usually go up to 1/250 to get a little bit smoother slow motion.

Not sure the S&Q will work in my case. I have to go into the menu and switch to 3G output from 1.5G for single SDI 60p to the video assist.

I agree Ben. Color should be a spec. I guess what bugs me is the fact that canon seems to limit some of their cameras that can do more then what they're locked into doing.

For example, look at the 5d iii and what the ML hack has been able to do with this cam. It shows the almost limitless capabilities that camera can do. But the 5d iii out of the box without jail breaking has hardly any video features. Why canon???

So canon makes cameras that are capable of being amazing but just blocks this from us and tries to force us to upgrade our camera. :/

And I get it. They don't want everyone buying just one of their cameras but that doesn't mean you completely make your dslrs crap. Look at Sony. Even though they have their FF mirrorless cams with a ton of video features people still buy a ton of fs5's and fs7's. I just don't get why canon can't do the same.

I mean canon is just now putting c-log on the 5d iv! LOL Why now? Why not when the camera was released? C'mon canon! It's pretty ridiculous IMO.

    Agreed. Canon is ridiculous.

Heres a thought though... The Cine Alta cameras all have really nice color, F3/F5/F55, are they kind of limiting their lower end cameras by not unlocking the color the big brother models have? The F5 looks real nice to me. I love the F3 image. I suppose it is a different sensor, but how are the skin tones, green rendition, etc, so far off.

I highly doubt 4K 60p will be on that camera. Canon's lower end cameras have never had better features than their higher end cameras. Remember when the c300 first came out? They had 60p at 720p and the c100 didn't have any 60p Lol!

I don't think canon will be changing their style anytime soon although they should. But if they don't change things up, Sony will be surpassing them in camera sales within the next 5 years IMO. Sony is killing it with their FF mirrorless cameras.

I think canon doesn't get that people love specs and innovation. Even though canon has an overall better image they should not rely on that alone. They seem to not care what users are asking and needing. It's kind of annoying. I almost sometimes want to leave canon just because of their stubborn ways but their image brings me back :p

The C100ii did, and that was only 3 years after the c300 was released, correct?

I don't get how color is not a spec. I can't mess with that FS7 footage. How does a 6 year old F3 have a better image...

With the roll at the back, at pmw ex1 ex3 etc. can directly access all the camera settings that appear on the screen; I know that button you say, but it has nothing to do with what I asked ...

I understand that at pmw f3, did sony engineers consider it unnecessary to direct access by pressing the roller and have disabled that function?

DVX user has a sub forum where they would definitely be able to answer your question. I use the F3 regularly and I just assumed there was no workaround for this. Changing to 60p/422 3g/shutter speed is a serious pain when going from 24p to 60p...

  6. I would get a used MBA or a MBP that still has a year or so of apple care. I have a 2012 MBP with a 1TB SSD and it does great. Just get 8/16gb of ram and a solid state drive. You should be able to edit 1080 with magic bullet looks unrendered at full quality and get smooth playback.

FS7, F5, 700 etc are all cinema start line units, they need not be great in low light as they are meant to be used effectively with adequate lighting on a set (this is my

Not the case with the F5. That camera kills the FS700 in lowlight, my F3 has really low noise at high ISOs as well.

Have you considered not using Slog2? Slog3 and 2 are not recommended in low light, and even less in slow motion. Try using a different profile and you'll probably get a much cleaner image that you can still grade (not so much in terms of contrast).

Can you shoot to an external recorder with anything but S-LOG2? I was under the impression that the SDI out was locked at 4k to SLOG 2.

    Hi guys,

Recent convert from a 7S2 to a FS700, but Im having some regrets...

As far as Ive understood the FS700 claims to have good low light capability, from what I can see (maybe I'm doing something wrong) but its just horrific when its under low light, there is noise all over the blacks, fine in daylight.

Im shooting in SLOG2 as most would, setup on my shogun flame to record 3GSDI Signal in 4K, and also Ive done shots in 1080 @60fps & 120fps, of course I know the higher the frame rate = doubling shutter, so thats a given, but even in 4K 24fps / 48 on the shutter the noise is just horrific, even when graded lightly to push more black in you can still see the noise. I tried 2000ISO also and its just a little too dark for somewhere 'with low light', but even so it shouldn't produce noise at 4000.

Ive attached a little clip of what I mean of a shot from last night, one clip is graded slightly, then the other ungraded and you can see as there is light on his body, its no noise, the moment the light goes away it ripples with noise all over? Any reason why? Was shot at 4000ISO I believe, and at somewhere around 2.8-5.6 stop

Outdoors and with lots of light, no noise and its fine, but the moment you go under a dark setting its just un-usable.

Anything you can point me towards that may help - I'm at a loss....

Anyone can run me through some setup steps with the fS700 & shogun flame one or the other to help me decipher this issue, not sure if I'm missing something obvious.

    thx

In short, you're way under exposed when it goes dark. If the scene can handle it, you could over expose the lit portions, that way when the light dims, you'll still be feeding light to the sensor. Anything under 20 IRE on the wave form will have noise, especially when you raise the ISO up to 4000. That camera has a really noisy sensor.

On the 7Q recorder, I always used a LUT that darks the image by 2 stops, effectively forcing you to over expose. I would almost always ETTR and not clip, just to push more light to the shadow areas.

Are you using the speed booster? I would definitely be shooting at F2 at ISO 2000 if I were you. Shooting at 5.6 in a club at night with slow motion won't provide the cleanest looking images.

One thing about those files vs your 7S2, is the Pro Res files can handle the noise reduction a lot better. If you can build the time into your workflow, Neat Video could help you out a lot with noise.

Even if no one is really enthusiastic about Canon Log on the 5D Mark IV.

I was until I heard the rolling shutter was really bad. Kind of a bummer.

I predict the "C200" will compete with the FS5, so 1080p/10 bit, 4k/8 bit. Of course the Canon will look miles ahead of the FS5 because of the color...

All I heard is from a canon rep that there is a c100 mk3 that is 4k and it will be released soon. I thought we'd see it today but Canon rumors guy told me on twitter we won't see any more canon cinema stuff until later this year. So now all we gots to do is wait.

    I'm curious why they would release a C100 MK3...

Oh you don't EVEN want to bring up XC10 stuff on here LoL. There are lots of people that lost their ass on that lovely, little, bastard, piece of crap, what the hell, stupid, why the hell, video camera that could have been pretty damn good, if Canon was not Doing what Canon does best. Gimp the living shit out everything they make, on purpose, to sell you a better one next year. :frown: Well that is their plan, but sometimes the Newer one is no better or worse.

Canon has a hell of a different mindset than Panasonic, who I think really does try to make everything they make as good as it can be made, at the time, for the price point. I think they really do care about the end user. Canon, they just want your damn money. If you own a Canon, they have some great stuff, you are basically their sort of life long piggy bank.

I think in reality Canon is TOO Damn big of a company. They are not hungry, and that makes it bad for customers. Why the hell don't they have a FF Mirrorless camera. Why? Why doesn't Nikon either, who is about to go Belly up!  Nightly Rant over LoL.

Depends what you're doing. If you're shooting a 4k landscape, this actually a better camera than a lot of other options. Green actually looks like green. Skin tone is the best as well. Built in lenses have their perks.

Loads of people are buying the FS5, but the c100ii puts out a much nicer looking image. It all depends what you're doing.

Im not sure why people write off color as not being a feature. ?

All of this makes me think the 1DC is probably the smart buy.

I'm giving mine another chance by abandoning shooting in LOG. Already the colours are a lot better and the mushiness in fine detail is gone. So far I'm using the profile 4 with sharpness and contrast down a notch or 2.Will try and find some blue skies and see if the banding has improved........

I found the log to work nicely if ETTR. You also need to sharpen in post because C-Log has no sharpening.

Have you tried WIDE DR with the new firmware? Does that have noise reduction applied baked in?

  12. XC10 is great, you just really need to test the limits of the camera. Obviously tricks like ETTR help a ton. C-LOG is clean and looked really good to me. I don't own the camera anymore but want to buy one again. It is just a really really fun camera to shoot with. Liberating coming from a very large camera. I would be curious what the new Wide DR profile looks like.

    Positives:

Really light weight, Very small/compact and discrete, High bit rate 4k images, great zoom lens, really nice auto focus, deep depth of field making exterior shots, etc, really easy to focus, that excellent Canon color.

    Negative:

1080 codec is weak, most of the internal profiles look pretty bad, lots of noise reduction - kinda mushy, lowlight is pretty bad, hard to achieve shallow depth of field with wide shots, expensive C-FAST cards only.

I would say for daylight shooting, this camera rules. Seems like a great stock footage camera, probably great on a Ronin or small SteadyCam.

Well, I think the comparison is valid, certainly the C100 is a cinema camera with incredible features, but the XC10 also can replace it in many situations using the right external elements, like for example adding a good external recorder, but the issue is the ghosting, I can`t live with that, also the size of the XC10 is so right, it looks like any other camera, in the other hand the C100 attract too much attention from random people, if a XC20 is released without ghosting I will be probably moving to that, but I don`t think this issue is going to be fixed soon, canon C300 mk II, yes the latest canon cinema camera, also has the same kind of ghosting than the XC10, just harder to find, but still there…..

Yeah, I really hope they make a better version of this camera. Wish I could justify owning this, the perfect little camera for picking off b roll outdoors.

I borrowed a XC15 from my LCS for a day ... when I returned it they had a GH5 that I picked up.

Played with the files out of the XC15 this afternoon and there is much to laud in them. Just

difficult without a couple extra programmable buttons and more than one ND setting.

Rumors, specs, and then, finally, in-the-field-reality.  Once part three of that equation is happening let me know.

Regardless, looks like competition could be moving the needle a bit.

Agreed, but Canon always delivers, even when the specs do not.

I just do not understand how this is a positive, in this price bracket I want the ability to rent and use PL glass. Anything can be adapted to E mount, it's a superior mount to EF unless you use exclusively EF glass.

It all depends what you're doing. Metabones sells a lot of adapters...
