Yes, film means additional challenges because you have to master the techniques. Because it's more complicated, the nimbus is greater. Orson Welles on cinema: the biggest electric train set any boy ever had.
I find myself enjoying books and comics more than movies. They became too elaborated in film language and are constantly trying to overwhelm me. They look too perfect to make me suspend my disbelief. It's like you are offered a wooden horse for the hundredth time. I am actually more immersed with less audiovisual input.

As a young journalist/producer I almost immediately after school drifted into Radio- and TV-production of entertainment, sports or news.
I was a decent writer but didn't have the patience. Im more of an creative director that don't want to spend time doing stuff that I can tell/hire someone else to do. I want full control over projects
Any aspirations of fiction and "movies" I had started to fade since I preferred a faster and more "real" medium.
Within a few years I had drifted more and stopped making short films all together.

My personal video work became documentary and my work left the journalistic side and went into communication, public relations and advertising in a governmental agency.
Currently switching jobs again after almost eight years to work public relations, communication and marketing for one single company in the private sector (its a huge company). There I will get to spend enough time making videos that I don't think I will keep it up as a hobby much longer. Other than some youtube and family stuff.

But during this whole time my interest for still photography has really grown.
Now its almost all I think about.
I think the reason is the challenge. To take a situation that you would normally capture with 3-5min of video, audio, grading, angles, movement, slow-motion, effects, music, dialog, and so on.
To capture all that in one single frame.
    Click!

I see photographers telling the longest and most engaging stories, really moving me, with just one frame.

I still see myself as just a beginner in still photography after some 20 years, 3 of which Ive taken it more seriously. I don't think most of my images tell much of a story at all. And thats why I like it. There is so much to explore and learn. I guess Ive found the ultimate medium for my type of person who wants a quick fix but still have endless possibilities.

dude sweet~!!! i cant wait to see it!!!
bottom line is: its as good as you make it. you could make a webcomic that BLOWS PEOPLE THE F AWAY. and at the end of the day, no one really cares what your content is, its about ideas
that being said ive spent a lot of time learning about filmmaking because i determined (after doing damn near everything else in the arts) that it is the ultimate art form – one that combines all others: and more importantly there is no better delivery method for your ideas, no more resonant, moving form of impregnation to the human mind
ppl love comics dude. do it up. and dont feel like youre "not" filmmaking. all the shit ive ever done in my life has gotten me to where i am now. every part of your art practice informs every other part of it – much like life itself

My latest computer seems to have died on me after about 7 months. Luckily this time I had my important files on my external ssd. It was kinda cheap, and I expected it might be a little disposable, but 7 months seems nuts to me. I kept pretty good care of it, barely even moved it.
Is a mac always going to last longer? Is an ssd hard drive necessary for longevity?
And what's the best way to back it up? Because this is just terrifying. Copying and pasting the files to my hard drive seems wrong, and doesn't update the files when they're changed of course. paying seems unnecessary (plus I paid for a service for a while that didn't even work).
Sorry for the noob questions, and I know it's been discussed, but yeah, any help would be great

Computer longevity depends not so much on the brand as much as the quality of the components. So a more expensive computer is more likely to have better components and last longer. Of course that is not always the case and electronics are doomed to fail at some point. 7 months is too early and probably you got a lemon that should be covered with some form of warranty.
If you can't have it fixed, then you should be able to remove the hard drive and access it on another computer. Its probably just a 2.5" sata drive judging by the price point. With that said, if you see the boot screen then you could try using a windows USB recovery drive and see if it can fix itself.
For synchronization I use FreeFileSync. It is open source and it works great.

You might still have all of your files intact.

Macs  generally use the same internal components as many non-Macs.

More info needed:   Does it not turn on (blank screen) or does it fail to boot (you see stuff on the screen initially, but your desktop doesn't come up)?; Does it have multiple drives?; Is it a laptop?; etc.

Obviously that "everyday life vlogging" is really big and to be honest, like most of you, I can't really understand the appeal. My girlfriend watches Jamie&Nikki a lot and I just can't get over how that's basically just watching two random people do their every day blah. They have a million followers who care  about what boring, regular things they do.
I mean, I can kinda get why people watch Jon Olson, he's at least a ka-razy semi-celebrity, blowing money and living the life, so you watch him do stuff most of us will never do (still working on saving up for that lambo). You'd also think there's only so many ways you could go about contouring but make-up how-to channels are such a huge thing.
At the same time you can see that usually production value is of no real interest to a lot of people. Same with Instagram, there's a lot of people with hundreds of thousands of followers with just the same composition of iPhone pictures over and over and over again. It's more about people's voyeuristic needs and identifying with the content creator than with the actual content.

When it comes to technology, I kinda get why less might be more. I wanted to see how the GH5 fares by looking at what gets uploaded to Vimeo and YouTube and by god, if I have to see another video that is 100% slow motion flowers / dogs / people shopping I will scream! It's approaching "cooking video with ukulele background sound" territory. It seems that a lot of people who care about "filmic, cinematic videos" exclusively produce camera test videos. Gear is the purpose in itself, there will never be any output. That's actually also fine as a hobby but there's the tendency that these people only criticize and never create/contribute.
I'm actually really re-evaluating what I want in a camera. Maybe I can do with "worse" image if it actually means I'll shoot more due to better usability?

It's just another genre. Neistat and Fine Brothers are the role models to this group. Note that The Fine Brothers managed to shoot a show for SHO a few years ago using consumer Canon pocket cameras. These guys are content machines. If they stop producing at ridiculous rates, their revenue and social stock can crash. That's fine, but it leaves little time to improve the art. It's what they want to do and more power to them. I have friends that are into this, and the have a love/hate relationship with it. Personally, have no interest in that mill.

Also, I have almost no doubt their current path has a better chance to be more lucrative and notorious than the one I'm on, but the style of content-creators is not one that I personally would find creatively fullfilling or artistically worthwhile.
I like traditional movie-making too much
"Content" will have a place, but I think overall it's probably just not for me.

Liam reacted to Mattias Burling in Review of the service Stolen Camera Finder!
When you buy and sell used camera gear  you need to be careful. A lot of stolen stuff floats around and markets like eBay makes it easy for them to disappear. That’s why a service like Stolen Camera Finder is a godsend.
    http://www.stolencamerafinder.com/
I recently bought a Leica T. A lovely camera. For street shooting I would say its the best camera I’ve ever used. Totally in love!
But this is not about the camera.
The price was fine, the seller had a long history, everything seemed legit. He even provided the serial number. When I got it home I tested it out and everything was fine. The day after I had to leave for a tripp and I naturally brought the camera. It was not until I got home that I remembered that I should just do a routine check of the number on Stolen Camera Finder.
Why I didn’t do this beforehand, like I usually do is beyond me…
Stolen Camera Finder works by crawling the internet and sites like Flickr, registering EXIF Data.
In many cameras the unique serial number of the camera and lens are imbedded in the data. You then simply drag-n-drop an image on the site or enter the number manually. If the crawler gets a match its BINGO!
    You can:
Find a stolen camera Report a found camera Checkout previous owners of camera Track stolen and reposted images So What Happened?
I entered the number manually and… Bingo!
It had been reported stolen in Spain two years ago. So I filed a report of a “Camera Found” and waited for a day or two.
Since I didn’t hear anything I contacted Matt, who runs the site.
He has now put me in touch with the original owner who lives in Italy and we are working out the details on how it will be returned!
All in all I will probably loose a bit of money since the seller probably wont pay up and/or used a fake name etc. But I will certainly gain a bit on my “Feel Good Account”.
And at the end of the day, I would love it if the same thing happened to me if anything ever got stolen.
A bit of a sunshine story imo
(now back to searching for a new Leica T, like its slogan says, "Easy to use, Hard to forget".)

Liam reacted to Turboguard in Table read - Help salvage a short film.
So in 2014, me and two friends set out to shoot a short with my new BMPCC and for me to learn how to use it through practice. I ended up with 350GB footage, but then put the project on the shelf. I had a 4 page script dabbled down for the shoot and less than 24h to shoot.

Last year I finally decided to put together an assembly cut and wanted to share it here. I learned through the assembly cut that I clearly didn't get enough coverage and some of the scenes just look terrible in terms of my setup and (obviously) because of the time limit.

Okay to the point, I thought it might be fun to salvage what could be saved so have uploaded the assembly here:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4RzH3eFvfE8c21WZEdjTWtTN0U/view?usp=sharing

I was thinking, you who wants to, can download and look and maybe give me some pointers what work and what doesn't. You can def think out of the box and rechange the basic idea of the script and delete scenes you think could go etc. Even pull it into your NLE and move things around.

I did record audio separately that I haven't even touched yet cause I felt so let down with what I had gotten footage wise. But it's still on a drive in case this turns out to be a fun collab with y'all so yeah, audio in this cut is from the BMPCC.

Hope you'll think this will be fun! Can't wait to hear what some of you think, even if it's only a short comment or what you feel you have the time to share.

    Thanks!

I don't want to blab on too much more how I've been learning to draw and animate lately, but I stumbled on this book in the process and love it. It's a really easy read, and each chapter had several moments of "OHHH! Now I get it!" It's making me think about framing in a new way, as well as boosting my storyboarding skills like crazy. I'm almost positive it's okay that it's online for free because it's in the creative commons, but.. grain of salt. Worth a look. Happy filming!

I really appreciate your time, thank you. It might not be beneficial for me to respond to each point and get defensive.. I'm a little stubborn, and I know it's a problem, so I'm sorry if any of this comes across as snotty (but hey I may not be real either, so doesn't matter). I'm just not really looking for ways to "improve" the film. Those notes could be an interesting new direction to take it; I just don't think it would be this film anymore at all. I generally agree with show-don't-tell, but I don't think the dialogue tells the story here, so they're speaking, but not telling. And yeah, my resources were limited, so I played both parts. I tried to distinguish them, but I'm okay with someone reading it as an internal thing

    SPOILERS if you haven't watched...
Its a whole bunch of close ups I can see this is the same person is that what was conveyed by the shoes off at the same time? Im not sure what the ring was trying to say but it meant something...or did it....
it feels like your flirting with the movie types like "The Waking Life" and "A scanner darkly" you have to show not tell... you were discussing universal things... I would raid all the stock footage I could and cut to it to show your point.... talking about major deaths you could cut to grainy news footage showing bodies...(dont have to be super graphic or it COULD)  when you speak of Hitler  you could cut to Clips of "Triumph of Will" when speaking of dumb people you could show 1984 clips of people just marching to work like drones in the style of  "koyaanisqatsi" type time lapses watching TV or 50's footage of an Idealized turkey dinner...
You talk about sex you could cut to people crying some Jerry springer type show or something... etc
you need more wide shots perhaps you could get a friend to sit there...  or you could shoot a plate from the perspective of the bed looking at you sitting in the chair the chair and shoot your back in the same perspective...
I still dont get the power strip with the light coming on....
I get the impression this is a person talking to himself in an inner dialogue....like he is deciding to go Kill? or is he just getting drunk??
Also all the stuff was in focus and I could hear it pretty well and the color looked like early morning to me.
I know saying this stuff is alot easier than doing it... I should a been a critic!
its alot easier to put paint on somebody else's  house than to plan dig a foundation and build your own!
I wish I could flow with ideas like this for my own shit. But just remember I am some nobody on a message board... and I may not even be real

Yes, it's not universal what one person would like vs another person.  Rent a bunch, do a test, and get the one that you like the most, and you find the most valuable for your needs.

I bought it new but from Texas Media Systems where there is a 20% restocking fee, so that would tank me like $1000.  VS just selling it. And plus , after the initial fiasco of the ursa mini 4.6k sensors, I don't 'think I would buy the pro right away - I would still wait like 3 months for them to "beta test" it.
Motion cadence is fine - I'm used to that.  Still the BM pocket is silky smooth but but I like the super35mm FOV and I don't have to frankenstein a rig together.
The fixed pattern noise is ugly - but this is a $6k camera.  The imagery with enough light is a tiny alexa.  It has beautiful color and skintones and sharpness.
It blows the dirt out of the fs7 image and the c300 ii image.  It's all in 6k- well you get a battery mount and top handle and it's like $6500, and boom, you are off.  But compare that to the FS7 which - you are forced to shoot everything at 2000 ISO right?  And just has that Sony ugly weird orange skintone thingy.
The sensor on the one I have has no issues that I can find - haven't seen a magneta cast.  I think they solved that.
Customer support - for a small company in Australia - you get what you pay for.  You basically can buy 2 for the price of one c300 ii.  that should solve any in the field tech support issues
