Kinefinity: I understand why you are adding ProRes, but why did you drop cineform? It is the codec that I prefer.

    Awesome Mr. Jones
I feel these guys at Kinefinity have a hard time with the West, as Chinese products kind of have some cheapo taboo and they don't have a decent international marketing and sales channel.
It also doesn't help there's a lot of animosity online about them, mostly with those who own an expensive camera like a RED. Those who do own Kine cameras say the support is great and the products are top quality.
    These would be good questions:
    1. Are there plans to expand their international sales channel and expand dealership of their cameras?
    2. How do English speaking countries get support for the cameras (with a language barrier?)
    3. Do they have a license to use ProRes and if not, when do they expect to get it?
    4. Does the global/rolling switchable shutter work in any protoypes/models? If so, is there a significant quality difference? (BM failed here as GS was not good enough).
    5. Is there any loss in quality using Hi Speed modes, and if so, what will be compromised? (Resolution, noise, moire, aliasing).
    6. Is every frame rate/resolution on the cameras available in both Raw and ProRes?
    7. What is the functionality of the KineGrip? How long can a Sony battery power the camera for via the grip?
    8. How long does the Terra take to boot?
    9. How much more weight will the KineBACK and regular V-lock add to the overall camera?
    10. What is the native ISO?
    11. If I was to pre-order the camera, when can I expect to receive it?
    12. What cost are we looking at if I order the camera with a Kinemount and an extra adapter? (Like EF or PL)?
    13. Does the 6k model have a 5k mode? If so, why not?
    14. Are lower resolutions and Hi-Speed modes crops of the sensor or can they be used with the full Super35 image area?
    15. What is included in the Wi-Fi functionality? What can we control?
A lot of questions. But I love the look of the Terra and there are many unanswered questions.

    I agree.
I think it will be an Ursa Pocket, as the Ursa range is replacing the sensor in a box designs of before. Whatever market gap there is though, BM will be on it.
In terms if a camera purchase, I've also been on an A-cam yo-yo. I think an investment now really does need 4K, as in two years, clients will be asking for it as standard.
The issue I have with 4K is that most of the manufacturers have bolted on thin and brittle 4K at the expense of better HD.This is also affecting high frame rates. We get brittle 4K with mediocre to poor HFR performance. The A7SII is a good example of this. 4K is ok, yet the HD HFR modes are much worse in quality. This camera screams for HD 10-bit, but it's skipped for thin low bitrate 4K.
A major purchase must cover every required area at a high quality, and because clients in the UK don't care what you shoot on (as long as it looks high quality), you can get away with brands under the attractive RED logo.
I love the images from the Ursa 4.6k, however the camera is still pretty chunky (needing to invest in bigger tripod, slider etc) and the HD HFR is far from ideal for professional work.
Pre-NAB, the ideal camera that could last years in a professional environment is the Kinefinity Terra (if the image quality remains high). Small, light, modular form factor. 5k 60fps. 4K 100fps. Raw and ProRes. Global or rolling. Good price. Organic aesthetic. Can be speed boasted and have any mount. LUT support. SSD's. Seems like a no-brainer that will last a long time.
If anyone is going to NAB, please report from the Kinefinity stand.

Yeah that is kinda my joke about the Ursa Minor... Basically pocket 2 that will combine the qualities from the pocket with the qualities from the mini 4.6. But a Pocket 2 and a separate Ursa Nano would be well received as well.

If I had a $5000 camera budget, I would raise another grand and get the Canon 1DXii. 4K up to 60p. From what I hear, clients love Canon and it will be a workhorse for the next 5 years.
And then I would raise another $1500 and pick up the BMMCC, a screen and a cage.

Been shooting with the Micro for over a week and have shot a ton with the Pocket, which I love. So far, I like what I see out of the Micro and the obvious plusses like 60p and battery life. As Andrew pointed out earlier, the buttons suck. I'm getting better with them, but the record button seems to suck way more than all the others which is just plain unfortunate. There are times when inside my wooden cage (which also sucks) that I fumble around trying to start or stop recording. Major pain in the ass. This wooden cage is going into the spare parts drawer for when I need some mounting options for something McGyvered. Once I do some edits I'll share footage.

Did a side by side with my Pocket & Micro. BMPCC Speed Booster + Sigma 18-35mm. Here's what I saw. No earth-shattering differences but differences nonetheless. My feeling is that you would *have* to view them side by side to know which was which.

    • Noise is mildly reduced on the Micro and a touch more monochromatic.
    • Moire is also slightly less aggressive on the Micro. Maybe 20% less?
    • Micro exposes a hair lower than the Pocket. An adjustment of -.15 on the exposure slider in DaVinci on the Pocket footage brought them in line.
    • Slight color difference between the two. An adjustment on the tint slider of about 6 or 7 points evened them out.

    Sweet! Love Borrego.
I'm always down to do some shooting. From what I've seen online they look pretty similar. I'm stoked on the obvious frame rate and battery situation, but it will be interesting to see if an IR cut is still necessary. Anyone know?

The customer service on the H1+ seems pretty decent from what I've read on the Facebook group (various reports of them spending time helping people with their settings, doing remote PC adjustment of the PID settings via the SimpleBGC GUI app).  They also post and respond to questions on there.

Sure, but It's probably gonna be a while until I get it. They're supposed to ship 21th of March, but since I ordered the 2-hand handle as well is 28th of March. You probably gonna get a intel a lot sooner from reviewers, but feel free to request tests when I get it!

This looks like the best image you can get under 10K without buying into Red's ecosystem. This, coming from a former Red owner and operator - and I sold that once I saw how the very first blackmagic camera handled low-light noise.
The Rolling Shutter, oh so what. Hey look, I'd rather have a company that tries to do something really amazing and fall short, rather than a company that intentionally cripples cameras to sell you the next model 6 months later, or are trying to protect their tiered market strategies.
There is no false advertising or bait and switch. Because you technically didn't buy anything. It was a pre-order. And BM was upfront about the issue and now they're releasing the camera. They're actually pretty damn responsive without the attitude (RED).
Yeah there was a delay - like other small companies in any industry. That's what happens when a company is driven by innovation and don't have billion dollar resources. A world without RED and Blackmagic would be immensely damaging to the independent film community. They've changed the market for the better.
The crazy sense of entitlement, construing this as some unethical business practice is hilarious. "I will never again buy a blackmagic product" - Ok, enjoy your hacked 5D or franken dslr, or whatever you shoot with. Because blackmagic doesn't owe you anything. If you sat in front of your computer hitting refresh for the past six months, you have every right to be angry. But not at blackmagic. You sad, sad little man.
I hope everybody cancels their pre-orders, so please! Keep complaining.

But that's your choice to make isn't it ?
    The real takeaway is....
Don't plan for anything that you can't buy today and have in your own hands to test for your own needs.
Don't plant to shoot with anything you haven't tested and can't get your hands on.
Then you'll never be disappointed by a product being delayed.
Yeah they shipped a camera that said RAW on the box and enabled it a month later (the 4K).  Pretty sure they hardly had actually shipped any actual bodies but it was poor form.

I agree and around this time of year with NAB everyone's always like...whooo wait and see what XXXX will show up and do and it STILL hasn't happened because no one's even touched their very first camera.  Who else TODAY does an internally recording uncompressed RAW / ProRes / DNx camera with such high DR ?  No one has actually matched it !  STILL  !!  That camera was launched in 2012.
They even added features they didn't really plan to ever add.  When they made the first camera, they were just like, let's see if anyone buys this.....They dind't know it would be as successful as it became.  They started a whole new division.
The Ursa is a great evolution.  Look at how far they've come with the form factor.  They have done their own EVF....They've continued to add functionality, and they've still not really crippled any of their cameras for the sake of other tiers.  That's impressive for a small company in such a short amount of time.
Look at the Cion.  They even are rumoured to use the same 4K sensor.  And they supposedly had the better form factor.  All the reviews were, Oh this is what BM should have done yet it's failed almost as miserably as Dalsa did.
Why ?  I mean yeah BM are infuriating with the way they operate but I don't see anyone else coming close to doing what they are doing.
