Cinegain got a reaction from JazzBox in What memory card should i buy for GH4?
I'm exclusively using SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC 64GB 95MB/s cards. SanDisk has proven themselves with the Extreme Pro series which I went with for the GH2 back in the day. Not the cheapest though.
Lots of people I guess are using the fast Transcend cards as well, which are a bit more affordable. Samsung's PRO-line seems decent too.

Cinegain reacted to benymypony in Pack of original LUTs made by myself
    Dear EOSHD community,
I am an independent french graphic designer and I regularly work in photo and video.
Over the years, I created a collection of 3D LUT files to ease the color grading of my projects.
Recently I created a pack with my 38 original LUTs.
They are profiled on high-resolution color matrix and were built to preserve skin tones as best as possible.
I had the chance to work with many different cameras and I spent a lot of time creating these looks and testing on raw footages, from 5DMKII and 7D with Magic Lantern, GH4, A7S, BMPC 4K, and stills from RED EPIC.
About HDSLR, these LUTs are calibrated on CineStyle/Cinelike profiles.
Also in my pack is included a LUT to properly « flat » a footage and get a good working basis before grading.
Website for more infos : http://luts.iwltbap.com
Instagram with short video samples : https://instagram.com/luts
At the end of this post you will find some sample images before-after.
My LUTs pack is for sale $20, but I created a discount code of -25% for EOSHD community.
So you can get it for $15 instead of $20 via : https://sellfy.com/p/Ainy/-EOSHD
My pack is regularly updated with new LUTs and all updates are free.
On my website you can download a free LUT with the famous teal-orange look.
Also, I offer for free a 4K film grain based on 35mm film scans (10sec video encoded in Apple ProRes 422 at 25fps).
Hope you will like my LUTs.
    Best,
    Benjamin

Cinegain got a reaction from sandro in First Sony A7R II user experiences - global shutter and native ISO 800?
I would've liked for Canon to have ripped out the mirror and OVF on the 760D and to have gone with an EVF and 4K. Same for Nikon with their D5500 (as a hybrid shooter I find the D5300 especially frustrating on this front, liveview shooting experience is terrible, my first OVF camera and it felt like a huge step back (image is trully great though)). Not something EOS M or Nikon V, but more like Panasonic's GH4 and Samsung's NX1. Nice ergonomic sizeable body with a bunch of controls and buttons. Decent if not good batterylife. Vari-angle display is a must I'd say!
The 550D/T2i, 7D and 5DmkII really started something. But since then... boy o boy. They sure milked that 18MP sensor, didn't they? And I mean... from the 650D to the 700D they've added a dial to not only turn clockwise but also counter clockwise, filter effect preview in liveview and a different rubber coating. That's all they did and a 'new' model was born. Atleast the Nikons have gotten 1080/60p and atleast the 1080p actually looks great there. Now, finally there's a new sensor... but has anything else really changed? There's HDR video on the 760D! Yay! Oh, wait, it's 720p restricted. What else? Well, not much really. Pretty much the same functionality as before. Why would anyone want to start off their path with Canon anymore? I'm afraid Aaron's right. People just don't know any better and video enthusiasts like us only form a relatively small target audience. That's why I'm glad Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and Blackmagic aren't forgetting about us/are glad that they have a stake in the availlability of 4K material. I would be interested if they could recreate the success of the T2i and 5DmkII. One entry level and one more professional level camera that would hold a 2015/2016 standard. But then again, even if they did, given their trackrecord... would you really put your money on Canon still? Yes, their C-line is quite something, but let's not forget, so is the price... And with a lot of people shooting hybrid, have to keep it low budget or just want a small solution or just need stuff like slowmo... you're better served elsewhere.

From the recent NAB 2015 one of the highlights seems to have been the Wescott Flex: http://www.fjwestcott.com/led-lighting/flex .
Can't really give you any recommendations as all I got myself is some low-end stuff: Aputure AL-H160, AL-198 & AL-198C LED video lights with 2 stands (König KN-LS10) & 1 ministand (PhotoSEL ST121) and one eBay ringlight softbox.

Well, as a liveview shooter (the D5300 was my first non-mirrorless), hybrid shooting on the D5300 isn't the greatest experience there is, so I need to either give in and start appreciating the OVF or perhaps give up on stills altogether. Then there's the thing that I have a bunch of vintage and third party lenses and the most I can get of them now is from a 16MP M43 sensor... so it would be actually kinda nice to have those 24MP albeit full manual operation, since the only native lens for the Sony would then be the kitlens that comes with it. Atleast it would still have some mirrorless features mirrored cameras just don't offer. So XAVC-S coming to the A6000 might just seal the deal; was just wondering about the overheating issues. Will have to keep a lookout, maybe I can spot a nice deal. Thanks for the input.

There is no denying that this looks like an impressive camera, but I'm going nowhere near the pre-order button until I've actually tried it on a professional shoot. I do that with all new cameras, throw them into the deep end straight away and start shooting a paid project.  The 4k, 5-axis, Slog2 etc means nothing until it's been put through it's paces.

I've never noticed overheating on the A6000, whereas it was definitely an issue on the NEX 5N. I've never bothered doing a stress test tho (leaving it running continuously in the desert or whatever). The SDXC card I ordered hasn't arrived yet so I haven't been able to use XAVC-S yet.

Can't speak for the A6000, but I have the A5100 (because of XAVC and the touchscreen) - I shot a dance performance indoors and it was my static wide shot with the 10-18 lens on a gorillapod. I did three consecutive takes of 25, 28 and 28 minutes and there were no overheating issues. This is so much better than my old 5n or Nex7 which would overheat in less than 10 minutes on the first take and usually about 3-4 minutes with each subsequent take. I live in Florida and frequently shoot outdoors in really hot weather, the A5100 has been great for me. Can't wait for its 4k replacement.

Yes, contrast seems to be best at -5, see some test shots on this, along with other thoughts/conclusions in the NX1 DR settings thread. Basically: DR gamma, sharpness -10, contrast -5.
I'm not sure why you'd want to increase the black level. I can see it helping if you're delivering straight out of the camera, but otherwise I see it as simply wasting the low end of the encoding range.

The title is sounds a little more provocative that it should.  What it boils down to is that I decided to pick up an NX1 and couple Rokinon DS lenses, and we're curious how usable the NX1 is as a 4k B cam for the Dragon.  Now I'm not one for test videos, never made one and would rather not, but I am willing to post my experiences and a little footage if they community would be interested in the results.  I looked around a bit and didn't see anyone else who'd posted the same info, so if you're interested, go ahead and chime in, and I'll be sure and update the thread. If it only ends up only being a person or two interested, I'm happy to keep it off of the forum and just email individual parties.  Lemme know.

I guess you forgot to learn to read while you were so busy being a colour genius.
I said you can (generally) match the colours, but it is more hassle. Time is money. Matching 8 bit to 14 bit raw is also not 100% possible (Go Pro to Alexa skintones! hahahahaha). Maybe you know more than the rest of the industry though, perhaps you have the same plugins they have on CSI miami?... good for you.

If Sony colours are for you, I fully recommend this camera. If you go back to my original post I said "My only concern" ... I don;t hugely like the Sony colours.... Sensors are not equal.... It is personal preference.

    Hello all,
I'm a happy owner of an A7S and I'm quite pleased with it's video quality when you know how to use the beast (maybe except poor battery life but well there are solutions).
This is a great announcement but the thing that bugs me a lot is the Sont FE Lens lineup !!!
Very restraint choice, lenses around 1000$ that have distortion and CA (corrected by the body but that's not good for a lens of this price).
I'm also doing photography and it's quite unpleasant with the A7S, because, there's hardly any AF lens except the reduced and expensive Sony Lineup !
If you do event, you just NEED a fast zoom like a 24-70 2.8, I don't understand why they don't pull one out, or faster zooms, or cheaper primes.
    Sony please hear my prayers
(yeah you have metabones, but with metabones, no decent AF ...)

    Hi guys!
Long time since I last posted here! OK, Last month Burbuja Films and I presented Midnight Sun, a documentary about the prolific music scene in Finland, Norway and Sweden. Let's try to embed the trailer right here:

I filmed the thing last summer during a two month hitch-hiking trip in these countries. Alone. For the journey, bands day to day and interviews I used the RX100 mk2, and for the music videos the BMPCC with c-mount primes. I also had a zoom h1 for audio. I was forced to use this tiny cameras as I was travelling with just one bag, but I also realised that sometimes the smaller the better, specially in this kind of docus where I needed the people to feel comfortable and act natural in front of the camera.

I just wanted to let you guys know that EOSHD was a huge source of inspiration it terms of which gear to choose for the job. I'm really happy with the performance of these two tiny cameras -they never let me down in the two months of production and we think the result is fantastic, considering the low-budget-ish nature of our project. Now, the documentary is touring in festivals all over the world and we hope people enjoy watching it.

    Thanks for helping me!

    Javi.

What we need is a more efficient implementation of IPB: one that switches to ALL-I when then encoder can't hit performance targets for IPB (large motion vectors, etc.). This would allow ALL-I spiking to well over 200Mbps (up to the limit of the hardware write speed). Manually switching between ALL-I and IPB shouldn't be required: computers are supposed to make things easier

Cinegain reacted to Julian in Thoughts on crowd sourcing
Crowdsourcing is not the same as crowdfunding. Nothing wrong with either of them, you are not forcing anyone to pay or participate.
I don't think it's easy to crowdfund a short film though. There is a lot of competition, you'll need to get your project in the spotlights. I think you won't succeed if you can't show anything. You should have a teaser/trailer or some previous work/films at least and it better be damn good...
If the mentioned soundtrack is made by someone like Hans Zimmer you'll probably get away without showing anything. If it's someone nobody really knows, I wouldn't expect people to have much interest in it...
Have a look at Kickstarter Movie projects. Plenty of examples that worked out great or didn't work at all. In most cases it's clear why it did work or didn't work.
It might be easier to crowd source it. Look for a sponsor for your wardrobe, find some student actors / sound guy that want to work on their portfolio. Or 'pay' it yourself by doing some work for them in return.

Yeah, jax has beaten me to it. The MV88 looks nice for on-the-go, but clearly states it's iOS devices only indeed (kinda same idea as the i-XY: http://www.rode.com/microphones/ixy ). The rest of the range should be compatible from what I get from the broshure ( http://cdn.shure.com/brochure/upload/78/motiv-brochure-english.pdf ).
Anyways. That aside. About your own little solution. Now, how does that actually work? What is your used brand/type of mobile phone then? And just to get this straight... you're then using the smartphone's mic? And where does 'a wifi stick' come in play exactly?
Perhaps you can upload it using https://www.mediafire.com or https://soundcloud.com for example.

What I'm trying to answer is what type of images appeal to what type of people online.
Therefor I'm posting this on various forums and ask my friends and such in order to get everything from fellow producers, to enthusiasts, pro shooters and all the way to people that couldn't care less about cameras.
As a bonus I'm looking to see what type of people notice artifacts, what people think about different grades, lights, movement and so on.
    So in Part 1
I'm simply recording a selfie while I'm chewing gum (yes its boring like nothing else).
If you feel like helping out I would appreciate it.
To clarify, I rather know which you liked best in each scene/look than which one you liked best over all.

Nice shots and montage. Keep it up.
Not sure about the music used. The riding and tricks themselves are perhaps already hard to give a bit of an epic touch, selecting a bit mellow music might dull things down a little. Different tracks might've worked better there, but perhaps you've wanted to do a different approach to skating/scootering videos by not picking your typical upbeat song. But then again, must be a reason it's typical. Matter of taste perhaps.
Also, be careful with black cuts like in the first video at around 0:35 there's two of 'em, if you were actually pushing smooth transitions before. It's a bit disruptive imho.
