Are you in the market for a new camera and confused or overwhelmed by the choices available and can't decide which features you need and which you can live without?

Or, are you looking for a camera that gives 4k60 10-bit with IBIS, flippy screen, and internal NDs that fits into your budget and into your pocket?

    Are you thinking about 8K?

If this is you then look no further!

The best new camera purchase in 2018 is... Don't!

Thanks for your advise,we will still leave a bottle of beer out for father XMas

I don't understand why there are complaints about Nikon Z's line up of lenses. The specs don't look as exciting as say Canon R's launch line up but seem more usable and affordable  to me. The MTF numbers are crazy good. If true the f1.8 primes are monsters. I'd rather they launch with lenses good for general purpose photography, like an f.8 prime, than exotic specialist stuff like f1.2 (scheduled to appear in a couple years).

Here is a Nikkor f8 prime to keep you happy

In my eyes the bodies aren't the problem, it's the glass. Take your typical higher end zoom kit common amoung those that shoot stills and video.

    • Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 II $1000
    • Panasonic  35-100mm f/2.8 II $1100

    • Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM $2200
    • Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS $2600

FF. is over twice as much.  The sad thing is, I don't think this is something your average person looks into when choosing a system.

There are far more lens choices with Full frame particularly third party

    Sigma 24-70 F2.8 Art   US $1300

    Tamron 28-75mm f2.8   US $400

    Tokina 24-70 f2.8       US $950

If you want high quality wide or fast with micro 4/3 you pay through the nose -Panasonic 42.5mm f1.2  US $1400

True but there is a Ton of old, real old MF Nikkors laying around that will be a hell of a lot better suited for Video work for peanuts to buy. And they Ought to work really well with the new adapter. So it is not like you Have to buy these new lenses.  Sure for Photos the new ones might be the way you want to go.

The incompatibility with other lens brands due to the long "F mount" flange distance is also vanquished, there are some great old manual focus

    lenses Minolta,Pentax,Miranda ,M42 mount etc

This is exactly why they went with f/1.8 Z primes instead of faster. Other casing point is the Leica 50/2 APO, which still sets the benchmark (although all the rest they made is not far off in absolute terms).

Their new 50mm F1.8 Z is far from being a simple design, even compared to the 2011 release G which

was a significant step forward from the old film era AFD lens.

If anyone is comparing lenses, be aware that one of the advantages of having a fast lens is that you can stop down and get less distortion.  For example, if you get a 50mm F1.4 and use it at 1.8 then it is likely to be optically superior to the 50mm 1.8 at 1.8.

This is why people would buy a 1.2 lens in comparison to an 1.4 lens - it's not because they want to shoot a lot at 1.2, it's the performance at 1.4 or 1.8.

And generally less vignetting and better edge resolution than the F1.8. lens.

    50mm F1.2L & 85mm F1.2L are hallmarks of Canon's lens line-up, especially pro portrait photography.

    Also let's not forget that on a Super35/APS-C crop sensor/mode F0.95 becomes F1.4 & F1.2 becomes an F1.8 in DoF.

They are pretty versatile & unique lenses imo.

MFT, CA & breathing are pretty poor though (especially on the 50mm L) and this is where i'd expect Nikon's Z primes to take the lead.

Nikon's new 50mm f1.8 Z is 12 elements in 9 groups including 2 ED glass and 2 aspherical elements should spank

Canon's current 50mm f1.8 which appears to be the same optical design as their 1987 "film era" basic  six elements in five groups.

Its an interesting video and the short he shot looks very good. His enthusiasm for the camera seems both genuine and infectious.

But what really struck me through the video was how it seems like a DSLR shooter who has just had a mirrorless epiphany. Lightweight on a small gimbal, longer drone flights, ibis is like a gimbal built into the camera, accurate focusing. I particularly liked his comment at the 38th minute....

'This was the big breakthrough for me..... all of a sudden the ability to shoot video while looking through the electronic viewfinder - game changing - completely game changing for a guy like me.,...'

Looks like he has been shooting video on Nikons right back to the D800

This looks very deep to me - certainly a lot deeper than the mirror in the DSLRs it is emulating.

For our lens experts - does this mean there is glass inside it?  and what implications does that have?

It's certainly not a compact setup then, to use the new body and a small pancake lens!!

It thought the pic was the new lens adaptor but it is the 180-400mm with built in x1.4 Teleconverter

weighs only 3.5kgs  !!! will she take the strain   ????

  10. Nikon Rumors are claiming two FF bodies for 23rd announcement plus three lenses

    Nikon Z6  24MP

    Nikon Z7 45 MP

also in the pipeline a Nikon Z-Noct Nikkor 58mm f0.95. (adds up with the first teaser video at night)
