So potential 5D customers that are more interested in video now matter all of a sudden, maybe the sales are not going so good with the stills crowd.
It seems to me that Canon relies to much on fanboyism, like old wars Canon vs Nikon, but in my opinion new generations have much less brand loyalty. For me, best example of this was NX1, yes maybe Samsung didn't sell enough units to stay in business, but just look how many forum members here own them and do some great work. All those guys weren't afraid to switch to a new player in camera business because they knew they are getting a very capable camera for a good price, and it can serve them well for a few more years without a problem.
Now there is Fuji XT2 that shoots 4K video and probably has even better colors (IMO) than Canon straight out of camera, and with those great picture profiles you even have the option to create different moods in camera without much grading, for a fast turnaround. And also lets not forget best looking JPEG stills straight out of camera in the business.
On the stills side of things, lets say I want to buy FF DSLR in that price range, why would I go for 5D IV, when there is Nikon D810 with still better DR, more than enough resolution and lower price point.
Also, switching glass is easier than ever these days when you have all those Sigmas now that are even better in some cases than their Canikon counterparts, but are much more affordable.
I really hope that they are feeling the breath of competitors down their neck, because who wouldn't go back to Canon if they do things right for us video guys in the future.

Yesterday we reported we were pretty sure that the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV would get C-Log via a firmware update that will likely be announced at NAB next month. We can now confirm that to a certainty that it’s coming. However, we do not have a release date for the firmware.
We’re now asking sources if the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will see a similar firmware update, we’ll report back on that as soon as we’re able to.
There has been another suggestion that Canon has been actively looking at ways to “improve” the 4K video capture crop on the EOS 5D Mark IV. We cannot confirm at this time if we’re going to see that in a firmware update.

I think it is a little, too little, too late to save their asses on it. They should have fired who ever OKed to make the specs on that dog a long time ago, video specs wise!

Yep I did, Mk2 was great because of having this video capability and the 3 too for Magic Lantern. They had the potential to become leader not only in DSLR photography but also dslr and mirorless video. 
They fucked it up. A Mk4 with proper video specs (at least A7r2 specs) would have been great. A Canon mirorless with those specs would have been amazing (adding better lenses, ergonomics, menus, colors to the A7r2 basically) and a Canon FF mirorless with exact GH5 specs would be the last and only camera I need for years

I am curious why you think it would be more of a 'perfect' Magic Lantern raw video candidate than the 5D Mark IV or 80D or even EOS M6.
There's nothing even unique about the 77D, even within the Canon range.
I can't speak for them but Magic Lantern would probably prefer to crack the 5D Mark IV before touching the most uninspired, basic, boring camera on the planet.
77D is practically the same camera as the 80D. I am shocked it even exists.
The "5 axis stabilisation" is a con... it is the same old lens IS plus a digital crop, which softens the image even more.
I can think of a million other cameras that are more interesting from a technology point of view.

In the time it took Nikon not to bring out the DL, Sony brought out 5 RX100 models.

It seemed like when Nikon released the D750 and D810 they were on a roll and then THUD rolled into a ditch.
They have done nothing interesting for 3 years.
And between the D5300 and D-whatever they are on now, also nothing interesting.
GoPro rival was a joke... Released just as the action cam market was over the hill... Yet to give the whole show to it at Photokina last year smacks of management issues too.
Nikon could have entered the cinema market, they have the optics, sensors, everything...
They could have gone into high end mirrorless market, the brand is stronger than Sony.
Didn't... didn't... didn't.
They won't survive like this... They are taking zero risks.

As someone who was a Nikon shooter for a LONG time and was looking forward to the 18-50 this is very disappointing.

Of course the AF is shit. Pana never ever showed the capability. If the tracking would be great we would see it. Early reports say it sucks. 
Then you say yes but it is a very very early firmware. The camera is releasing next month, are you for real? It is close to final firmware for sure. 
Then the tech itself, contrast base AF is called contrast based because of a reason. It uses contrast and therefore sucks with low contrast. 
The AF will be better than GH4 for sure, but it wont touch Canon let alone A6500. 
Like other said before in this thread focus in video is getting THAT important. So as a guy said before yes we have to choose between Sony, Canon, Pana, and others and they all suck at some important things. Can a company could finally do things right once in their life and put important things in one camera? Too hard to ask to have a 4K60p + 10 bit + FHD 120p + IBIS + tilt touch screen + nice ergonomics and menu + nice color science + Canon like AF, in a regular size body with FF sensor for a decent price? 
Panasonic, except for the sensor size (but in video it is not that much impacting I think) they had almost everything here. And they fuck up the AF. Damn

Vlog has nothing to do with focusing. It is not the contrast on your screen that counts but the one in reality

1 - it's not PDAF
2 - first multiple shots on youtube with AF confirm this 
AF is gonna be a bit faster than GH4, but no magic can be done with contrast detection aF in video

Well I think the next Sony A7 cameras will probably be the way to go, granted they will be nearly a $1,000.00 more than a GH5. Sony is not going to  let Panasonic overcome them. Sony seems to be going for the throat lately so I would expect the next A7s will be 10 bit, god knows what else. They are not going to stand still.

Exactly, if you take a look of the supported camera they haven't released any solid firmware for years now. http://builds.magiclantern.fm/ The most recent one are the 5Dmk3 and 700D... With Canon being so behind now, especially with the 5D4, I think the dev team decided to move on and focus on more interesting projects instead of trying to rescue crippled camera from the 90s.
I'm still using the 6D and 5D3 here. Going to buy the GH5 and waiting for the next generation of Sony A7.
