I kept wondering what is about you that don't draw as Much attending with a boom Mic and Large Sound Equipment (or camera equipment in this case) as everyone else.
Sir, you look like Einstein testing for things nobody is quite sure of, in the city. They probably won't suspect that you are part of a film crew. I won't be surprised if some bystanders stand next to you for Yoga lessons and lessons on Eastern Mysticism.
You have almost 2 careers running parallel. The Sound Yogi ?

Yes.  I read that, but that makes even less sense than BMD and Panasonic offering only EF mounts (or longer) for their S35 cameras.  What if somebody wants to use a M4/3 lens on the Yongnuo M4/3 camera?  or, what if somebody wants to use a speed booster, tilt-shift adapter, c-mount lens, etc. on the Yongnuo M4/3 camera?

All they have to do to easily solve those dilemmas (and probably sell more cameras) is to start with a M4/3 mount and supply the camera with a smart, reinforced M4/3-to-EF adapter... and the camera will still take the Yongnuo lenses.

If you go for a bodyback recorder (I don't even know what that was until now!), as well go with the most optimum one, which is the DR10 series. In some events, when I do camera and we have no sound man, we depend on a couple of those and they have delivered so far.
If you ( @mercer ) want to buy the F1, then I am sure it is an amazing piece of equipment. You certainly know better your needs. I wouldn't buy that either, it is trying too hard to be a couple (even three) of things, and it misses in all of them, but it's your money, and your film, and it is very important to be happy with our purchases, a boost in spirit maybe is more important than a boost in sound!

The F1 is fundamentally a bodyback recorder, everything else is a bit gimmicky, and in my eyes the DR10L (or DR10CS) is clearly a better choice as a bodypack recorder.

    H6.

But why buy it when the Zoom F4 is shockingly only one hundred dollars more? Seriously, that is insanely crazy cheap when in context like that!!! wtf, as the F4 and H6 are galaxies apart, as the F4 is so far ahead. You'd almost wonder if they're made by the same company or not... :-P  (for sure if they had the "Sound Devices" brand name on them but otherwise the same, you'd find people heaping praise on them!)

Or the Tascam DR70D / Marantz PMD706 can be found cheaper, and are much more ergonomically bag friendly (than the H6) for a boom op juggling all the jobs in their department.

Go for the newer DR60Dmk2 over the old DR40

And if you don't have money for both a field recorder and bodypack recorders, then just get the bodypack recorders (and go for DR10L over F1). As it seems it is better suited for your needs. (and sacrifice a goat on a hilltop at full moon to the gods, in the hope everything will go well, as you're essentially shooting this deaf without monitoring what you're doing)

IronFilm reacted to BTM_Pix in JVC LS300 in 2018
Quite surprised to see one of the UK's leading photo/video retailers producing a brand new (and pretty comprehensive) video about the LS300 this late in the game.
Its a very decent run through though for anyone who hasn't really taken a detailed look at its array of tricks (and foibles) before.
I'd expect to see bundles with this probably around the £3K mark when the Ninja V comes out as the last firmware update gave the LS300 4K60p to external recorders.
Used, I've seen them go for £1500-1800.
I can't really see it making some sort of miraculous comeback as there are tons of other options out there now compared to when it was released.
Having said that, sometimes for certain jobs you just need a camcorder and at the prices they are getting to used there aren't many offering more bang for the buck than this one does.
    Budget for an EVF though.

IronFilm reacted to kye in Rethinking Zooms for the M43 Ecosystem
There is a deep divide in the vlogging community about where the flip screen should be..  those that use in-camera sound and prefer the screen flips over the top because it looks more natural if they look at the screen while shooting, and those that use an external microphone which is mounted in the hot-shoe of the camera and therefore they prefer a side-flipping screen like Canon.
.....then there are the Sony shooters, who focus on their hand and then just stare into their 16-35 hoping they're in frame!!!

IronFilm reacted to aldolega in Rethinking Zooms for the M43 Ecosystem
Yea that lens is not making it off of a body. Speaking of the LX100, Panasonic could dominate the blogger market if they'd just do an LX200 already, with better AF, the 20MP sensor, IBIS, mic jack, and a flip screen that goes up over the top (like an A5100).

Not sure why Leica couldn't make an outboard version of their fixed zoom on the Panasonic LX100.  It is fast, sharp, and it has a nice zoom range -- and it covers a 4/3 sensor.
  22. Thanks
IronFilm reacted to sanveer in Rethinking Zooms for the M43 Ecosystem
After doing a little bit of research, I discovered that while there is a site comparing most Amatuer and Prosumer Cameras (https://camerasize.com/compare/), there appear to be none that compare Camera Lens sizes (except one that matches M43 cameras with lenses for relative look and size estimations http://four-thirds.org/en/special/matching.html). There is a strange presumption that lenses must remain small at the cost of faster glass or great options, and this applies to Panasonic too. Olympus has been shamelessly making some superb glass and some of it is pretty small too, especially for the quality and brightness that it offers.
If Samsung could make f2-2.8 (16-50mm) Zooms, there is no reason Panasonic should not aim for Zooms that start brighter than f2.8 (Panny Leica f2.8-4 12-60mm). I saw the Zuiko f2 Zooms and they are absolutely enormous. Panasonic should aim for a combination of bright and decent range, even if it means a little large lens (not as enormous as the Zuiko f2 zooms). I don't like variable zooms, cause they suddenly feel weird if you don't close the aperture to begin with, and then zoom in.
A 12-100 versions of the stellar Olympus f4 zoom, but with an f2.8 lens would be perfect. It could be large. This single lens could outsell everything but the M43 system if it has good OIS and isn't priced above $1499.

An H1 is "too big"?! The mind boggles....

Perhaps get a Tascam DR10L to use on talent?

    Please no.

Just because people have done this (I've also seen people use broom sticks as boom poles! ha), doesn't mean you should do it!!

I wrote up last year my thoughts on the best pics for a recorder:
    http://ironfilm.co.nz/which-sound-recorder-to-buy-a-guide-to-various-indie-priced-sound-recorders-in-2017/

The only notable changes since then in this niche is the MixPre10T announced and the Marantz PMD-706 shipping.
Zoom F series pre amps are right up there at the same level.
And the Zoom F4 has more features and a lower price than the MixPre3.

Personally the only strong reason to get the MixPre3 in my eyes is its small size, it is shockingly small. So if teeny is what you want, go for MixPre3!

Don't worry, even expensive professional recorders run on external power.

And with a cheap powerbank the Tascam DR60Dmk2 runs all day long!

Or even better the Zoom F8n?!
