  1. Hell no, go for Nikon D500 or D7500, better stills performance AND better video performance.
  2. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1336174-REG/smallhd_mon_focus_5_touch_screen.html Micro-HDMI Input?? Nooooo Thank goodness the GH5 did away with the Micro HDMI nonsense and went full size! However the a7S mk2 is still stuck with micro HDMI But at least get a monitor with full size HDMI? As for an external recorder, I reckon 9 times out of 10 it is not worth it unless you are at a minimum going from 8 to 10 bit (or raw. Or gaining a leap in resolution to 4K, such as with the a7S mk1).
  3. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1336174-REG/smallhd_mon_focus_5_touch_screen.html Micro-HDMI Input?? Thank goodness the GH5 did away with the Micro HDMI nonsense and went full size! But now you'd return to that?? Please don't :-o Get a monitor with full size HDMI Stupid! But if it makes you money.... not stupid! However, why not get a mattebox instead for this purpose? At least it has more real uses than a battery grip would have for you. I would skip this and go for the Sony UWP-D11 instead (they're great, I own five of them!).
  4. Even with a USB powerbank you're still looking at less size, lower cost, & greater functionality than many other options. Plus for android users, it is very normal to have replaceable batteries. Well I can agree with that!! Those Leica cameras are a rip off.
  5. Sadly true. However.... Tamron makes Nikon F mount fast primes which are optically image stabilised.
  6. I won't deny for a second that Nikon is KING when it comes to screw up missed opportunities to capture the HDSLR marketplace! Which just makes it hurt even worse, when you think about how many times they were first to market but lacked going that extra half step further so they're delivering a really polished implementation of the camera as well. (unlike Panasonic, who not only push specs forward, but deliver a polished experience too! Such as no overheating or quickly dying batteries, like Sony will serve you up) I refer you back to my key line in my original post in this thread ;-) I'm just simply here comparing Canon vs Nikon directly. As for many people, and for many parts of the world, the Canikon duopoly is a real thing. However, I won't deny either for a second that Panasonic has been doing great things for us! :-D (and Sony too) My first ever camera for filming with was a Panasonic, a GH1 to be precise. Loved it! Yes Nikon is lagging, but only relative to Sony/Panasonic (and a few others, such as BMD, and Samsung back when Samsung existed). However within the little bubble that is the Canikon duopoly, then Nikon is at least broadly equal with Canon and arguably even has pulled ahead of Canon (their non-Cinema range that is). Yes focus peaking in the D850 is limited to only in 1080 (which is DUMB!! You want it for 4K too), but the sheer existence of this feature means a major shift is going to happen within the Canikon duolopy. Just like what happened when the Nikon D90 arrived on the scene as the first HDSLR. You will see all future Nikons having focus peaking, and you'll see the focus peaking improve (such as for 4K), and I bet within the next year or two we will see Canon add focus peaking to one of their DSLRs. Just like what happened with the D90, then Canon had to respond to Nikon. If the D850 didn't have focus peaking, I bet we'd need to wait an extra couple of years (or more!) before Canon would finally in its own sweet time add focus peaking to its DSLRs. Personally the D850 is not for me (too expensive! And I don't need such a serious hardcore photography camera, even though a like a bit of photography too as a hobby). But I am excited for what this means for the wider Canikon duopoly struggle, and thus what it means for the wider camera marketplace for everyone. Plus I'm excited for what this means for the future D750/D610/D5600 successors (cameras which I would be more likely to consider buying for myself).
  7. Directly above I said beforehand: For many many many student / indie / prosumer / hobbyist filmmakers, we can basically pretend the Canon Cinema range doesn't exist. Nikon brought out 1080 60fps and 4K to cameras we could actually afford such as the D5300 and D500 respectively.
  8. Yes, but still, FIRST! And thus the D90 at the time represented a massive leap forward from everything else indie filmmakers at the time had access to. And it is what finally forced Canon hands to add video too (don't ever forget the 50D was capable of video!! But Canon didn't implement it, as didn't bother giving consumers video until forced to by Nikon).
  9. In a way I'm not at all surprised in the slightest! People keep on forgetting that Nikon has been beating Canon to the punch in video over and over again, when we compare Canon vs Nikon directly. (if we ignore Canon's Cinema range) First ever HDSLR: Nikon. First with 4K DSLR: Nikon. First with 1080 60fps: Nikon. First with focus peaking: Nikon.
  10. That happened with the a6000 Meant for a while you had the odd situation of the a5100 being a better camera than the a6000 (which is why I bought the a5100)
  11. Bad batteries? Buy a fresh battery for them. But then again it depends why it is stopping working for you?
  12. Noticed how many videos are 10 minutes and a few seconds? Is because the 10 minute mark is where they'll get more adverts/money for the video.
  13. My two favorite movies are documentaries (which you can view the full films for free online!!): 1) "Line of Sight". As it gives a very small insight into the world of being a bike messenger (which I live and breath myself! It is what I do in between my freelance jobs as a sound recordist on set), that otherwise the normal average person just can not do. https://www.pinkbike.com/video/299661/ 2) "Fat Head". Because it exposes what nonsense the food pyramid is. And that eating fat is not as evil as everyone seems to think it is. (personally I've been living a Low Card High Fat diet since 2011! And will carry on so for the rest of my life).
  14. So so many opportunities missed with the Nikon 1 series! The Nikon 1 series could have made 1" sensor mirrorless a success just maybe, if only they'd develop unique optics for it that would have pushed itself forward as a unique and compelling system. But... nope! Even DX would be a lot lot better if only it had more DX optics for it! (buzz buzz buzz... as Thom would say! But thank goodness we have Sigma and Tokina instead).
  15. No reason why someone couldn't design a Medium Format to Nikon F mount focal reducer. Then you could stack focal reducers onto a MFT mount??? :-o
  16. Fingers crossed the D5600 successor doesn't have crop for 4K (and has focus peaking in 4K!). As I'm certainly not buying a D850! But a D5x00 series camera is one I can easily afford if I wish. I guess a slim possibility that the D5600 successor might be so low end they'll keep the crop for 4K with that. But I feel 100% confident that all new cameras that are higher end than D5x00 series will no longer have a crop for 4K. :-)
  17. I strongly dislike the censorship Patreon has been doing lately in cutting off several prominent people just because Patreon doesn't like their views :-/ Ditto PayPal! Sigh. Yet I use PayPal a lot as my basic invoicing system. Need to start thinking about something else to use instead so that I stop supporting PayPal :-/ I originally developed my interest in filmmaking because I looked around and saw a terrible lack (or what little there was, it was of extremely poor standard!) of media supporting my viewpoints in my country. Heh, yet unfortunately all these years later... I'd done little to fix that myself?! As I developed a love of filmmaking in general for its own sake and been keeping busy on too many other non-political projects!!
  18. Good! Means all future Nikons won't have crop for 4K Good news about finally having focus peaking too! (pity only in 1080.... firmware update??? Please!!)
  19. You can pick up a secondhand UWP-D11 so cheap, I don't even see the point in saving money by buying a Saramonic UWMic9
  20. http://www.altasens.com/images/AL41410C-PF0476-10.pdf Fun fact, the sensor in the LS300 is capable to do up to 4K DCI 72fs 12bit!! :-o FHD can go up to 240fps!! :-o :-o Of course, what the max capability of the processor in the LS300 is a totally different question that we don't know. Dynamic Range is stated to be 68 dB, which is around 11 stops. Hmmm... thought the LS300 was more than that?
  21. Exactly what I mean when I say a "locking MFT" mount! Like the Sony FZ mount, or the new E mount on the FS7 mk2. A Panasonic EVA1 MFT would allow you to do all that, **and** give you the additional options of gaining a stop of light with a FF FoV with your lenses if using a focal reducer. *And* let you use MFT lenses too, if you ever changed your mind and went down that path in the future (or sold your EVA1 MFT in the future to a MFT shooter then they could buy it from you).
  22. Thought so. Still a much better mid range codec option at launch than the C200.
  23. So a lot of people strangely seem to argue in defense of Panasonic! :-/
  24. EVA1 does 4K 24 10bit out of the box? & I know about the C200 firmware update sometime next year. But by that time happens it could be a completely different camera market! FS7 might be slashed in price. FS5 mk2 might be out? EVA1/LS300/etc could have got surprise firmware updates. A cheap 5" 4K 60fps recorder monitor might be released. Who knows what BMD might release. Or Kinefinity. Or someone else we have never even heard of yet.
  25. Yes that is obvious, but it really isn't a reason why Panasonic had to go EF with the EVA1
