'Battle Tested' is Red's way of saving face and not having to say 'we are selling these off cheap! '
its all sales talk to make you think you are getting something of value.....

and at $4000 it's one hell of a Hollywood hit movie camera ! a bargin

now how much will the second hand Red One market drop to on ebay etc????..... $2500 ish????
There are some on ebay.co.uk at the moment that are going to have to seriously re-adjust their expectations thats for sure.

Non modded RED ONE Ms (of which they are still many) are now not economically viable to upgrade to MX as its cheaper to buy the MX so the massive bargain might well be buying an M (which is still one hell of a camera) off someone who wants to upgrade to an MX.

I find Jim Jannard's behavior of sudden co-incidences, very suspicion arousing.

It must a celestial superball event, greater than any, Ever, that Both, a truckload of Red one cameras were ordered by someone (whose name, was conveniently NOT disclosed), ONLY for lease, for some film, and then were given back, after the shoot. Also, Jim did not tell him, How many TruckLoads of cameras were ordered by this great incumbent.

    AND

That, suddenly RED Seems to have realised, that, their investments on their Entire Range, SIMULTANEOUSLY has been recovered, and so are offering discounts, reducing they prices to half of their original prices.

Oh, yes, another co-incidence, is that they have (suddenly) built an incredibly efficient factory in Irvine, California, fund better suppliers, lowered assembly costs etc etc. (We have built an incredibly efficient factory in Irvine, California and over time learned how to make EPICs in quantity, lowered our assembly costs, found better suppliers and fully paid off our NRE. When we assembled the 1st EPIC camera in Stage 6 at RED Studios Hollywood it took our team 12 hours. It took two more days to de-bug. Today we can assemble an EPIC in 13 minutes and 95+% need no re-work after diagnostics and testing. It is a testament to our manufacturing team and supply chain teams.)

I don't know how the RED guys do it, but, their stream of co-incidences, never end.

Maybe, they should be re-christened Co-Incidence Cameras, instead of RED Cameras.

It sucks the One MX is end of life... But such is life... No Dragon upgrade, the dinosaur.. Lol.

That's a hell of a camera for $4000. Didn't it utilize an external red drive you could get that was 320gbs at one time? It was the only one that's done that right?.... Red Mags are ridiculous, and a Red exclusive 16gb CF card sounds like a waste of the 5 minutes you'd get out of it at 4k... Don't really understand the logic of formatting the drive so it only takes Red CF cards or the fact that they're only 16gb... But they must be badass to be like $300 each. (Don't quote me.) To me though, going through the "red stuff for sale" thread, i've seen MX packages with the works going from $5-12k depending on the miles.. The external 320gb drive sounds like the way to go if someone had one for sale..

As far as Epic and Scarlet are concerned, the rental price may go down substantially now. I knew I probably still wouldn't be able to afford an Epic or a Scarlet system, but an Epic might not be $2000 a day to rent now!! Other than that, I'm pretty sure most people are more concerned about getting ahold of a $4000 Red One now that they're realistic... Which begs the question: since the only available units for sale are battle tested, wtf were they selling a couple of days ago for $25,000? Lol

Hey.. I'm sure nothing will be good enough until it is 38k resolution or whatever according to Red, but not for a few years at least, lol. If they sold nothing but Red One MX's for $4000 until then, i'm sure they'd claim the market for a long time... Plenty of major productions have used Red One's. i don't even need to name drop.

As for professional use of video (and even more for film), the business is a 'business on demand', and I don't see anybody demanding 4k, let alone pay for it. Jannards manic speech makes me wonder if he is a cocaine addict.

As for amateurs, future-proof means that they can show off with their stuff ten years from now. I made quite a few dozens of videos ten years ago, and all I can say is, if they were any good (some of them can be enjoyed because they have interesting content and are edited well), they remain good. The rest deserves to be gone with the wind.

I feel that Sony are a year or two behind Red on the signal processing side (don't forget the Epic has been around two years now with similar specs).
Based on what? On paper (and judging by the F65 footage), the Sony F55 will beat RED on DR, low light, colour rendition, will have a higher native ISO, high FPS, better codec choices and has a CCD sensor. The only tick RED has left is 5K output and the F65 just trumped that with 8K.

Sony are currently ahead of RED in every aspect, with the excepetion of personal choice aspects, eg, ergonomics, customer service etc and possibly price, when the dust settles.

Great cameras. I always guessed Sony has many advantages over the competition (it manufactures sensors, TVs, Blue Ray, LCD Screen, Tablets, etc etc, basically everything, plus Columbia Tristar Pictures).
Though, maybe the F5 and F55, will eat as much into the F700 and F65 territory, a they will, into the EPICs and Alexas.
I am guessing that, Arri will be out with a 4k Camera, before the end of the year (maybe they will just put some shit, into a fancy looking housing/ casing, and say its a brilliant 4k camera, with 15 bits of Dynamic Range, and can shoot 240fps @ 4k RAW, and then tell their engineers, to get going, at a war footing. :D Since none will be allowed to review the camera, none would really be able to call the bluff.)
I think they're just sticking to how awesome their Alexa is now.. Skyfall was uprez'd to 4k from arriraw. I figure that's their angle, lol.. "Shhhhiiiiiit bra!! We don't need 4k! .... Our TWO-k is still better.... Aint nobody watchin' 4k anyway!... Hugo bitchiz!"

I'm convinced that it's almost impossible to compete with Sony. They are on a roll that is impressive when you think about all the cameras they've produced all the way down to their Consumer Camcorders. They must have an enormous R&D department to have simultaneously developed so many cameras. It's unreal. They move faster than everyone else too.

''A widescreen 2.40:1 aspect ratio frames the images, which were shot “flat” and extracted from the Alexa’s 16:9 sensor. ARRI hosts Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, at IBC

This year has seen an increased take-up of ARRIRAW recording for big-screen movies. Being unencrypted and uncompressed, ARRIRAW helps ARRI's software and postproduction partners to create the best possible 4K or IMAX deliverables; post houses such as ILM are praising the ARRIRAW workflow and the most respected cinematographers in the industry are testifying that ALEXA images look incredible on even the largest IMAX cinema screens.

    SKYFALL trailer
ALEXA was the camera system chosen for the biggest film of 2012 so far - indeed the third highest grossing film of all time and the fastest ever to reach $500m in the U.S. - Marvel's THE AVENGERS. Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC, was so impressed by the functionality of the camera and the image performance of ARRIRAW on AVENGERS - his first digital movie - that he bought his own ALEXA. "The AVENGERS was my first feature film with the ALEXA," he notes. "I was really happy with our images. What was particularly impressive was how well it held up in IMAX theaters; this was a revelation to me."

    Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC
Another ALEXA film to get the IMAX treatment, as well as a 4K DCP, is the next James Bond film, SKYFALL, directed by Sam Mendes and scheduled for release in November this year. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, comments, "On SKYFALL we are producing a 4K DCP from the ALEXA using ARRIRAW. It was only after I had chosen the ALEXA that IMAX projection became a consideration. Not to worry! The images I have seen in the IMAX theater are simply superb. The quality of the 4K image makes the usual IMAX 'enhancement' process totally unnecessary."

Too many of the posts about this camera end with some variation of "I hope I'm wrong about this", but based on my observations I am beginning to feel that way too. Bluntly put, the GH3 seems like a downgrade from the GH2 in terms of usability. Unless there are some radical changes made between now and the GH3's release, I'll just hang onto my GH2 and wait for another viable MFT camera to be released. The good news is that these days there are new cameras announced almost every other month.

Inoue: Ah global shutter is a very ideal shutter. GH3 is rolling shutter. The readout is just 100 miliseconds, this depends on the sensor structure and sensor power.

interesting so each full scan on the sensor is 100ms on the GH3
I wonder what it was for the GH2 as it has bad rolling shutter

also it seams like they ar not interested in making a full frame GH camera as they have spent so much money designing and building a range of lenses for mirco 4/3 format -
these would not be useable on a full frame camera so they would have to design and build all new lenses $$$$$$$ a costly thing to do.

So looks like Panasonic are comitted to mirco 4/3 for the time being

Remember that, properly lit, one seldom had any banding issues with the GH2. The Bloom film was properly lit. After reading this (scroll down a bit), it seems this thing is not yet in the can with the ominous 'HDR'. Looks as if it is a feature for stills only, and the iPhone 4 has a similar function (it differs from HDR developing in Photoshop insofar as it may be also possible for moving objects or handheld camera, if not, if I have to use a tripod for landscapes or the like, I do much better with the GH2's auto bracket and seven 'consecutive' photos!). Also, the clip with the cat on the chair didn't look as if it had HDR, it looked definitely LDR. After all the minor and major disappointments, that we work hard to get used to, this would for me be the last straw. Still banding? OMG.
I think that HDR video is something that will be reserved for the high-end niche (i.e. RED One MX) at least for a while. But with moire and aliasing already back in a big way with the GH3, I agree, banding would kill this camera for me. I'm leaning more and more towards not getting a new camera this cycle. I have not been floored by anything I have seen, including the BMCC MFT.
