Orangenz reacted to tellure in Geoff Boyle: "F**k The Numbers"
It seems like the main message here is "If you learn the real skills of cinematography then the quality of your images will far eclipse all the high tech features, megapixels, and technical specs of the modern digital video age."  And it's true - great craft and artistry will win out over tech specs.
But I also think this is message overlooks some obvious realities about the nature of amateur and hobbyist videography - that tech specs often do increase image quality at relatively low cost.  Sure I could spend many months and even years learning great portrait lighting techniques so I can light a interior people shot really well, or I could buy a 50mm f/1.4 lens, slap it on my high-ISO/low-noise full-frame 4K camera, do a basic rule-of-thirds framing with existing ambient lighting, press the touchscreen focus with face detect and boom, I now have a fairly professional looking shot with creamy bokeh and sharp eyes in focus.
So sure it could be a much better image if I go much deeper into learning cinematography, beyond basic and overused techniques like point-of-focus shots.  But the shortcuts and some of the tech specs that enable them can be very high bang-for-buck for us hobbyists and amateurs.  Even more so if you're a vlogger or hobbyist that shoots run-and-gun or only with natural/available light under uncontrolled situations and you don't have the opportunity to do lighting setups or carefully framed shots.
I think Boyle's message is still correct and can even inspire us shortcut-happy hobbyists (I am firmly in this category) to go deeper.  But it does miss the point for a huge chunk of the videography audience, since few of us have the time or commitment to achieve the level of artistry he's calling for.  Technology has enabled us to generate images that make us and our fans/friends happy, often with an investment that matches our commitment or resources.  All of us are trying to maximize our return on investment, whether that's in time, money, or stress/difficulty spent learning a technique or tool, and technology has definitely escalated the return on investment ratio.

Yeah, the EVO is already a joke. Autel made big statement at the CES (one inch sensor) and now we have the usual tiny sensor. I understand this model might be pre-prod but the horizon drift and props in view is all over the place. Doesn't look promising.

By the time Autel deliver this drone, DJI will release the Mavic Pro II or something else. Autel will have a sub-mavic pro an no choice but to cut the price and the margin. Not very good to do serious R&D work.

I have 2 of the Lexar UHS-II 1000x Speed cards gathering dust in a draw for the same reason, though not from a GH5.
One failed in a Nikon D500 and the other in a Fuji XT-2 both after limited use, both corrupted the data and both refuse to format in anything.

FIXED!! ?  I just updated the firmware (v1.1) on my GH5s and tested it.  Smooth output via HDMI to the Atomos Inferno for DCI 4k at 60fps 10bit 4:2:2.  Nice Panasonic.  They didn't even take credit for the fix in their firmware documentation.  I guess they didn't want to admit to that one, but really Panasonic does work hard at trying to fix issues.  Happy customer.

Orangenz reacted to BTM_Pix in My LUMIX Hardware Controller Is Complete
As someone less than politely pointed out on the other thread, I appear to have been a bit of a lazy arse in the almost 12 months since I tripped over and found the Cinelike d thing.
You may recall it happened because I was researching making a hardware controller and after several iterations, here it finally is.

And yes, it does look rather like a calculator doesn't it?
The different iterations (including an Android app at one point!) have been in pursuit of making something small, standalone, self powered, fast connecting, push buttons and with an integrated screen at a lowish cost and, well, here we are.
Here is the finished spec and features :
Compatible with all Panasonic Lumix cameras that can be controlled by wifi Integrated USB rechargeable battery Full colour screen 20 keys with 3 bank switch keys giving 60 direct switch operations of functions Control of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction. Automatic unlocking of Cinelike D and Cinelike V on GX80/85, LX10/15 and TZ10 Control of manual focus in fine and coarse steps  Control of One Shot AF Control of Record Stop/Start Store and Recall 8 focus points 4 selectable transition speeds between focus points Store and Recall 8 setup presets (each consisting of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction) Presets are stored in non-volatile memory so are available in any session. Boot time to camera connection and control under 2 seconds. Wifi control range tested to 20m. Optional accessories :
Interface module to support Nintendo Nunchuck controller for manual focus control (native lenses and adapted lenses with smart adapters) and zoom (integrated lens cameras and power zoom lenses only) Wireless interface module to sync remote record and stop on supported Tascam, Zoom and SoundDevices audio recorders.  The controller fits a regular cheap cellphone to threaded adapter holder so as well as being used handheld it can be mounted to anything you have a need for with the right attachment so could be on a cage or a gimbal or whatever.

I'm going to be doing some more testing of it in anger in the next couple of weeks and I'll put up a video of it in action then.
So, I have been a bit less lazy than first imagined
By the by, the controller has both wifi and bluetooth so it begs the question would anyone be interested in a version of it for the Pocket 4K ??

Orangenz reacted to OliKMIA in Need advice for future proofing my pc for later upgrades for editing
Having two sticks allows for some redundancy if one stick fails. With one stick only your PC will be down in case of memory failure and it could be hard to troubleshot the issue. With two sticks you simply remove one after another and restart the PC to check what is going on.
I would start with 2x16GB to begin with. 32GB is kind of a minimum now for video editing, especially if you do a little bit of after effects.
Then you can add another 2x16GB later on.

Companies would love it if everyone believed this , but unfortunately (or fortunately for our wallet) it is not the case.
I have built and bought too many computers over the years.  Currently I am using a MacPro from 2010 with 12 cores, 64gb ram, an M.2 NVMe boot drive and a Titan X GPU and I can tell you this is no way obsolete:

That was of course when Apple made computers for professionals  . But with windows, which have even more choices, you can easily update any part of the system. Even with different generation CPUs you just need to upgrade the CPU+motherboard. RAM technology does not change that fast and easily lasts for ~10years.
Future-proofing is very important when building a computer. Unless someone has either too much cash to waste or no idea how to build a computer that is.

    Congrats BTM_Pix!
It looks lovely and ergonomic. It also has a bit of style. Looks like a Gameboy from the 90's updated for 2018  In a good, minimalist way.
I am all for stand-alone physical interface to an app. Touch screen and apps in heat of the moment can let me down.

Orangenz reacted to Andrew Reid in Lars von Trier returns to Cannes and people seem to have taken personal offence to his fictional serial killer
I don't think the majority of his work is even meant to be enjoyed. However in all of the Von Trier films I've seen, I've felt an intelligence and deep layered meaning was there behind all of the graphic scenes. If certain things are to be censored like sadism, then it means certain stories can't be told and I don't agree with that. Of course, everyone is entitled to an opinion on a film and whether they enjoy it or not is up to them. It's hardly going to be a date movie is it? But to get hysterical about it and walk out of the cinema like those 100 at Cannes is more likely a result of these people not really seeing beyond the surface.
As for left vs right politics, let's try not to get into that here, because it isn't really what the article is about. The left has gone more extreme, has gone hysterically politically correct, but the right has gone more extreme as well and both sides at their most extreme are as batshit crazy as each other. I don't support any form of political extremism either left or right. What I do support is the freedom of the filmmaker to make a film of his choosing without censorship.

“A filmmaker is always provoking some reaction from an audience.”
I totally agree Andrew. But the means a filmmaker uses to achieve this can define the quality of his art (at least from my point of view, anyone can disagree). The easiest way to challenge your audience is by serving them scenes with genitals being cut with a pair of scissors or crashed by stones and then calling them puritans based on their totally justified reactions. Is it a bad thing that most people can’t stand sadism & graphic violence in cinema? This doesn’t have to do with a pair of tits being “shown” but with a pair of tits being “cut off” (plus children being shot). And you are calling this an antidote? I don’t get this but who knows, maybe i am a puritan too. But in any case i consider my self as lucky for not enjoying his films.

We moved the shop to Resolve 14 (with networked workstations) this year. Definitely looking forward to 15 exiting beta as there's some really exciting stuff in there (We're going to wait for at least one service release before moving up, though. It took at least 2 before 14 was solid.)

Worth bumping this thread considering the Resolve 15 release. When you try and leave Adobe they will try and charge you for an extra half year or offer you "free three months" to stay on. Just keep on reminding them about your history with them and insistence that you can't afford it and eventually they move onto the next step in the prepared script and waive the fee. Be firm but polite. Currently Premiere just crashes on brand new machines so it just does not cut it for dependable editing.

In ETC mode you'd just about get away with it with a small crop.
If the OP wanted servo zoom as he's described though, he'd have to go for old B4 ENG lenses with an outboard 12V supply to drive it.
You'd have to be quite mad to do something like that though.
Like this weirdo attaching an Angenieux ENG lens to his GX80 and lashing a Sony battery to it.

I think you'll be disappointed with the AF performance of the Canon with the metabones.
With regard to the Lumix lens, its not going to get wide enough I wouldn't imagine for what you're after.
If you're looking for the facilities that you are used to from the camcorder but in a handheld form factor then I'd recommend you have a look at something like the FZ2000/2500.
Its a 1" sensor so its the same as the UX180, in built NDs, 20x zoom (with external LANC controller for the zoom if you need it too), VLOG if you want it, 5 axis OIS etc.
Where it falls down for you might be the lack of higher frame rates at 4K (though it does 120 in 1080).
The GH5 is a very, very nice camera indeed but as an overall package with the lenses you've listed based on what you are doing and how you are used to working, I think you might find it gets a bit unwieldly juggling it.

A pair of the flat type over ear headphones with enough grunt could do the trick as well where you just cut the left one off with a pair scissors. We could market it as the Van Gogh solution.

    Oh, the internal speakers...
    [EDIT]
Erases link to 3.5mm stereo to 2 mono jacks cable and inline attenuator.
    [EDIT]
Though come to think of it you could fake it by using that cable to come out of the headphone socket (which I presume mutes the internal speakers) and then attach the right split to a tiny speaker.

We don't have a multi screen setup, it's just for recording with OBS. The screens came from nowhere with the update.
But yes I would try uninstalling driver and reinstall, remember to unplug network just in case Windows Update wanna install drivers for it while you do it.
There is an option to disable windows update from doing drivers with gpo if you have Win10 Pro, if you can, do that, since Microsoft have no idea what they are doing at times.
