Curious to know why the price difference between the US and Europe (especially the UK) is much bigger for the D850 than it is on the other Nikon pro bodies.

    @BTM_Pix

Just expecting to see some 4k low light footage and then hold it in my hands and do some test shots. Last week I've buyed a Zeiss Otus 28mm 1.4...with Nikon F - now I only wait for the proof of the D850 qualities. BTW: I shot the Zeiss with a cheap K&F Nikon2NX adapter on the NX 1 some days ago. Colors, contrast and detail are mindblowing - from edge to edge...Can hardly wait to see this exceptional lens on a D850...

    From DPreview:
    "Video capabilities
In terms of video the D850 becomes the first Nikon DSLR to capture 4K video from the full width of its sensor. The camera can shoot at 30, 25 or 24p, at a bitrate of around 144 Mbps. Our initial impression is that the video is pixel-binned, rather than being resolved then downsampled (oversampling), but we'll be checking on this as part of the review process. This risks lowering the level of detail capture and increases the risk of moiré, though it's a better solution than line-skipping. There also seemed to be significant rolling shutter, but again these are only first impressions from a camera running non-final firmware.
At 1080 resolution, the camera can shoot at up to 60p, with a slow-mo mode that can capture at 120 frames per second before outputting at either 25 or 24p. The 1080 mode also offers focus peaking and digital stabilization, neither of which are available for 4K shooting"
    -----
focus peaking in 1080 only. Just where you need it most, eh?
$5400 stinking australian dollars (http://www.vanbar.com.au/catalogue/product.php?id=117355).  Really all Sony need to do is get within half a stop of their dynamic range in stills and I'm gorn...
I saw a second or so of 4k vid, in this and the 1080 slomo
    https://nikonrumors.com/2017/08/24/nikon-d850-product-tour-and-promo-videos.aspx/
    Heres a few nuggets:
The electronic shutter operates at up to 6 fps (AF/AE locked) at full resolution, while an additional mode enables 8.6-megapixel capture in DX image area mode at up to 30 fps.
No word yet whether this is the 12bit raw (I doubt it).
It does not look like there is a DX video option at all. (which is barmy seeing as it can record 30fps, but we'll see).
Yes dx crop mode (about 8 mins in). (but still no peaking.  Stupid stupid stupid)

well that explains the Aus price too. As the 5div is about $5100 over here (D850 $5300).  But Nikon has traditionally priced its cameras very close to the US equivalent and sometimes better.   So we have the weird situation where the D850 is 60% more expensive than the D810.  What they may not have taken into account is this now makes the A7rmk2 more attractive @$3700.  It makes this scint photographer determined to wait for the next crop of sony cameras, and maybe the nikon mirrorless offering.  The D800 still produces amazing stills, and I dont need most of the D850's bells and whistles (very nice so some of them are).

Why are you heading from sausageville to jerksville?  Can't I discuss what I like?  On a forum setup for video shooters using DSLRs?  I shoot a couple of times a week with these things. This stuff is damn relevant. Any time I can save using the same sodding camera to shoot decent stills and video improves my profits.  Expecting a camera to not have some compromises is ridiculous I agree. But please refrain from pointless bashing of people who have reasonable expectations and a specific requirement: especially when 422 10 bit for instance already exists in a ~$2000 camera.

there's a happy compromise though which NX1 users can tell you about   For what I do 24-28MP would be more than enough for stills.
Any canon still shooters here should try to borrow a d800/810/850 and shoot raw for a couple of days. I went from canon to nikon and it totally changed the way I shoot. Exposing for the highlights and not worrying too much about the shadows... knowing the deepest shadows would be a purple banded mush.  If you know shoot in high dynamic range situations its no biggee.

THANK YOU NIKON for releasing a great Camera at a decent price unlike the Canon 5D joke at joking price.
Unfortunately there is 0 point for me to buy DSLR when A7RIII will be the same camera but twice lighter, IBIS, better video AF, better video specs. But Thanks to you, Sony will release a superb A7RIII that won't cost 4000$ and therefore the A7SIII will be priced good also.
However Nikon, if you were to release a Mirrorless version of this D850, with IBIS and Canon like DPAF yet compatible with existing Nikon lens without adaptor. THEN we could talk properly.

stills; electronic shutter 6fps full frame, 14 bit.  All sRAW are at 12bit.  No word whether then 30fps is sRAW or jpeg.  If its sRAW then the burst length is the next question.  If I can shoot for 10 seconds then I can get 4K 12-bit raw video at 30fps.  This would be interesting.
Some bits of video in here. High iso looks OK (from what you can see from youtube).
personally I am increasingly primarily a video shooter who also shoots stills, when I got the D800 it was the other way round. As Leeys said a good still camera, but thats not why we're 'ere, eh?
    Good info here (see #8):http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d850/nikon-d850A.HTM
Looks like buffer allows 200 frames in sRAW, however this was not talking about the burst function. Could be less than that. So 5-8 seconds of raw vid a possibility.
    Sensor designed by nikon.

I don't know what they will do with D5600 replacement but they won't release entry level DSLR anytime soon. The next big thing is mirrorless in first half of 2018.
By the way, it should be embarrassing for Canon that the first DSLR with focus peaking is from Nikon known for its irrelevancy in video market.

I got a D800 - and it's easily enough for all of my photography needs. A smaller DX body with 4k and 1080p at 120 fps and affordable price - yes please!

Ah right, you were talking about the 30 FPS output in live view. I have a suspicion that will be JPEG, since sRAW goes down all the way to 11mp, not 8.6mp.
Funnily, I'm still primarily a stills shooter, but I've migrated to Panasonic's GH cameras; the stills are good enough and when I do video I get great video, no matter how little I do of it.

Fingers crossed the D5600 successor doesn't have crop for 4K (and has focus peaking in 4K!). As I'm certainly not buying a D850! But a D5x00 series camera is one I can easily afford if I wish.

I guess a slim possibility that the D5600 successor might be so low end they'll keep the crop for 4K with that.

But I feel 100% confident that all new cameras that are higher end than D5x00 series will no longer have a crop for 4K. :-)

Good news about finally having focus peaking too! (pity only in 1080.... firmware update??? Please!!)

I've spent a day converting the existing GX80 Cinelike-D hack html file into an Android APK. There's an added color temperature function.
This app should yield some usability advantages as it allows on the fly changes to the various picture profile settings and contains all settings on a single page. It also saves your last selected settings.

    Notes on installation:
-Allow installation of apps from unknown sources

    Instructions for use:
    1. Connect to your camera's wifi network
    2. Start the app
    3. Click handshake (ignore any update warnings)
    4. Click recmode
    5. Change settings before or while filming

    Other notes:
    1. The app may erase existing settings saved in your various picture profiles
    2. Camera IP selection is not yet implemented, apologies to those who do not connect to their cameras directly
    3. Tested on a G7

on those leaked chinese slides that this info is taken from the last but one was translated as:"features for video" followed by "empty page".  Inference hopefully is there are some to follow, not none at all!
So apart from waiting for some sample footage, I guess we're still waiting on
codec, data rates, peaking, zebras, (anything else?)
it was also pointed out on nikon rumors that the high iso is conservative.

jonpais I shoot at least every week, its my job, i"m not able to make excuses, weak or otherwise: It pays my mortgage.  I currently use the d800 for stils and the d5500 on a gimbal for video.  Having one camera to do both would speed up my workflow and reduce my hassle immensely. Currently there is no camera that shoots stills with the same DR as the d800 and full frame 4k.  If I went the a7r2 I'd have to change lenses to shoot 4k crop defeating the purpose. A7s2 does not have the same DR so I'd have to bracket stills meaning longer in post. D810 is a possibility but its very heavy for gimbal work blah blah blah.
If I want to grade my work a lot, whats it to you? I like it.  And why would you frame my flippant comment about a 4k mirrorless nikon as a childish plea for a new toy?

If it matches the video of the A99, also has decent AF, and lets folk use their Nikon glass natively, that would be an decent option for those invested in Nikon glass.
On the other hand if they brought out a video oriented D750 upgrade, 24 MP full frame sensor down sampled to 4K (A9 style) for half the money, then you can keep the 40+ MP camera.

It will certainly be pixel binned 4K like Fuji X-T20 and A7R II.
When done well like on the A99 II it can look very nice.
And Nikon's flat profile / colour / processing pipeline is very good.
Hopefully they won't forget to put the Super 35mm 6K oversampled crop mode on there... HINT HINT!

If not grading it much then the IQ is pretty much the same. For grading the 10bit files are outstanding and makes playing with vlog very enjoyable. 8bit at 4k50p is also great to have, as are the much easier ergonomics and buttons and operation, screen, evf, inputs, full size hdmi, better battery, better ibis and options. Having both the GX85 and the GH5 would grant you even more options of course. In an ideal world I'd have a second GH5.
The quick answer is it really is more gradable and there is quite a lot of examples out there you can download and try out. But also having the second cam around is handy.

I have them both and I actually like GX80 colors more. 50 fps 4K is for me the only reason GH5 is a better choice (and to be honest GH5 looks more like a professional camera, as GX80 looks more like a turist toy). I find V-Log unusable colorwise and I don't see a big difference between 10 bit and 8 bit footage.

deciding which camera to buy based on a DXOmark score is as sensible as a mixed metaphor on a bull.
and as td^ says I agree with you on most things, but not this. I dont agree with him either. Clearly image quality is not determined by dxomarks.  Surely you know better than most: horses for courses.  D5 is about speed.
according to dxo my d5500 has better dynamic range than my d800. It just doesn't. Maybe in the testormatic-dynamic-rangifier2000 it does, but in lightroom and photoshop - in a picture of an actual thing - it does not. Similarly my canon 7d would get near the 5dmk2 in theory, bit in practice the shadows were a mushy purple and green nightmare.
Anyhoo, IMHO the d800/d810 still has the nicest image on the market: and that's not bad for a 5 year old camera.
