  1. Except the fact that neither in 17:9 nor in the 4:3 aspect does the sensor do 60fps. Which means that it reads slower than the GH5 (obviously because it has double the resolution). Though it does seem to have multiple options of changing frame sizes so maybe it can have windowed 4k 60p or even windowed 4k 120p (or even higher). It also doesn't have 14-bit RAW, something which I feel could make the photo quality of M43 better, especially in the editing room. It does seem interesting indeed, for a sensor though, and I am sure it has a lot of other tricks up its sleeve.
  2. I don't know why, but RED's history and behaviour make me draw parallels with Lance Armstrong, arguably the most disgraceful sportspersons (if he can be called that), in the history of sports. How he bullied everyone, lied, took drugs by the truckloads, manipulated things etc.
  3. This guy is brilliant. He has already brought Red to its knees. Sony and Apple should hire him for sending Red to the cleaners wrt their fake patents. I noticed he has a gofundme campaign, and I would love to contribute. Anyone who believes in honesty and fighting off the evil behemoths and corporate super bullies, should help him too. In whatever little way. This is truly the modern age David vs Goliath story.
  4. Would 8-bit RAW be noticeably better than 10bit 4-2-2? Even for post work? Yes. Hopefully some good compressed RAW formats soon. Uncompressed, the file sizes could be way too large.

Out of curiosity, what exactly is this (megabit data) range? I suspect that there is unfortunately no compressed RAW on the FP, which probably means that it is Huge, at every bit depth (8, 10 and 12). Also 8-bit RAW is pretty interesting and I don't know anything camera that shoots 8-bit RAW. Wouldn't the advantage of 8-bit RAW be inexistent, if at all, over hight qualities of ProRes 10-bit (ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 HQ)? @Andrew Reid your suggestions and feedback to Sigma is pretty interesting. Right now it seems like a very early (non fully functional) prototype and they should listen to ad much customer feedback and they can. Uncompressed RAW would be a monumental disaster with a camera this size and with this feature set (even REDs would have enormous file sizes with uncompressed RAW). The ZCams have ProRes to make their cameras extremely usable (in terms of file size). Sigma could do immensely with various flavours of ProRes (or BRAW, though I think Blackmagic won't be allowing anyone else to use their codec on their cameras), and having better storage and a lower price point.
  6. Panasonic cameras have that new Composite image function where it merges many photos into a single images, showing movement with its main subject within the frame. The issue with that is thaybrje background has to be extremely still and anything moving in the background makes image look extremely strange. There appears no reason why smartphones can't do it, though I would call Apple's bluff on it, for the moment. I expect Goggle to come out with such an algorith first, mostly because its surveillance/spying abilities for technology are second to none
  7. Somehow the Quad Pixel idea (and especially that Along With the multi frame HDR) seems like a better idea than regular multi frame HDR (or even multi frame low light). By shrinking the pixel size, we get the advantage if both wider dynamic range, as well as better low light, and most importantly, we get none of the regular motion blur associated work combining multiple frames. I am guessing that the present Snapdragon processors aren't equipped to handle the full potential of the Quad Bayer pixel sensors, atleast not for the moment.
  8. Exactly. It shows 4 screens including the selfie camera. And then you have the option of choosing 2 for recording the video on. iPhone events add too much of hype. That's their raison d'être I guess. Each time they have a smartphone, they make it seem like the Alexa or Medium format has become redundant.
  9. Matt did say its non mass production (I am guessing it would cost 50-100k to buy one of these, IF not more). So while it could replace high end cameras apparently, its price would be prohibitive.
  10. The Panasonic Organic Sensor has been in the works for the longest. Apparently it's doing to make its debut at IBC (?). In the Matt Frazer interview he says it's not mainstream, and that that it will be rented (?). I am right now in bed and can't play the audio (and gave away both my headphones to someone). Basically Panasonic is going to release this monster which is probably stuck at 60p for some curious reasons and that had way more dynamic range (between 14 and 20 stops?) than everything else around and the 8k videos (that it shoots at) have 4 × 1080p streams and the ability of real time editing of motion within these individual 4k frames. We should probably know the complete feature set in a few hours. Also, curiously it has an EF mount (?). I think all this is true, Panasonic has truly something insane in the offing.

  12. Matt (Frazer) at Panasonic almost categorically denied Panasonic will be using a ToF to improve its DfD rubbish. He stated that it apparently got mised up because they use it in their other product division (automobiles?). He also mentioned the eoshd's Blackmagic experiment with it.
  13. You're right. Apple's literature on some of it's own sites is Incorrect. The US site, though is more precise.

Strangely Matt said that the ToF sensor assisted autofocus (he incidentally mentions its testing on eoashd.com) isn't on Panasonic's Roadmap right now (to be fair, the distance that the present generation of ToF sensors can see till, isn't top impressive, atleast those whose details are in public domain, though there is a possibility that way better sensors are in developmental stages or being tried out on new smartphones).

  16. Can it record on all cameras at 4k, or 3-4 cameras at 1080p each?
  17. I wonder whether it has new imaging sensors for improved image quality. The video quality I'd the XS Max was already pretty stellar. I wonder if it's better.
  18. The thing is that Panasonic announces its video cameras way ahead, to ensure people don't move to other lesser-abled cameras. Sony, is probably the opposite and keeps its cards very close to its chest, almost until the day of the announcement. Since the S1H has been completely uncovered, the A7siii is free to take whatever path it wants. Though I guess they may have a few prototypes, and likely with 2 sensor options. If that is the case, then in a few more weeks (8-16 weeks), we should know about the A7siii. If the sensor is already finalised, but the final video specs aren't, then Sony can do the announcement much faster (within 1-2 weeks).

  20. I don't mind waiting another 6 months for the GH6, and I hope they add the following: 1. ToF to make up for the crappy DFD in video. 2. Internal electronic ND. 3. Usable ISO upto 12800. 4. That new 8k photo mode in 10-bit in place of the 6k photo mode on the GH5. 5. A compressed RAW codec for when you need it for well paying jobs ?
  21. I think Sony may be waiting for the latest in both the S1 Series as well as the latest news on the GH Series.
  22. Don't think of it for 8k, think of it for getting superb 4k. And I agree on the internal (electronic) ND. A lot of high end cinema cameras have fast enough read out speeds, so they don't need a global shutter sensor. Also, global shutter sensors have very low dynamic range (way less than 14 stops) , and cost apparently a lot more to manufacture. If this sensor is a Starvis Sensor, then low light should be its strong point. Plus 120fps at fill res would suggest that it does double the readout speed of the GH5, at double the resolution (though I am guessing the 120fps may actually be at the various 4k resolutions and not at 8k, more due to processing power and memory space, more than anything else). So imagine a GH5, which does 4k at 120fps, instead of at 60p, and also has more dynamic range (14 stops?) and better low light (ISO12800?). It finally has one last trick up its sleeve, it does High Resolution HDR, combining maybe double the frames that smartphones like the Pixel and S10 do (because it can do full res at 120fps), and creates an HDR image which has absolutely INSANE low light capabilities and unimaginable dynamic range (over the 16 stops, the stated figure for Samsung's 64MP sensor), and hopefully all this atleast in 10-bit. I must reveal one more trick I though that Panasonic could employ to Beat the Competition. I thought of the ToF sensor to compensate for the crappy Panasonic DFD a few months before it was announced. Though sensor development in the ToF sensors will improve further on the coming year, because right now, the range of focus is rather limited. I don't know if I should reveal it, since people (infamous Patent Trolls names after colours ?) would be scrambling to patent it, and harassing everyone else with their patent. I thought of a way to completely circumvent the Bayer Pattern's Limitations (loss of detail and resolution, and loss of light).
  23. Actually Samsung or Sony might have an organic sensor Before Panasonic. This seems one of (arguably) many that seem to point towards an organic element/layer: http://image-sensors-world.blogspot.com/2019/08/samsung-presents-green-selective.html?m=1 Actually with the Quad Bayer pixel, the 3 Bayer colours could be tweaked mildly, to having varying shades of the same colour (or similar colours), having different sensitivities and thereby having the equivalent of HDR, without needing to merge 2 (or more) images, in a lower resolution image, and also not worrying about moving artefacts in multi-frane HDR. Also, for photos, if they could downres and upres simultaneously, they could have 36-41MP photos with great detail and acceptable low light. Though they would require superb Computational Photography algorithms for that.
  24. @androidlad posted a rumour on 43rumors.com regarding a new 41MP sensor, that Sony seems to have in its latest armour of M43 sensors. If it can manage the horsepower (and algorithms) required for handling such processing of (atleast) 2 varying levels of exposure per (merged) pixel, this could create some absolutely superb 4k with much greater dynamic range than qe have presently. Plus if it could have pretty good HDR photos too, it it does something similar to what smartphones do with computational photography, by combining details and information from a successive photo burst. The sensor also, curiously, does full res at 120fps, which seems quite a lot (though maybe with DRAM, that may be a possibility). if this is truly the sensor heading for the GH6, we may have a beast that reestablishes the GH line as the video powerhouse that the GH5 had been for the last 2-3 years, and adds even better low light and even wider dynamic range (entering full frame territory?).
