johnnymossville got a reaction from richg101 in Canon 5D Mark IV rumors
The way I see it, in today's world with so many other options, there's very little reason to have a video shooting camera without an EVF and titling screen.  The 5DMIV probably won't have either, and probably won't have 4k as well.
Canon needs a Super 35 sensor mirrorless camera with EVF and 4k.   This is the camera people need, and it won't step on their Full Frame DSLRs, but will kill them for 4k Video.

    1. I want to see the new Panasonic AF100 successor, and have it share the same color profiles with the GH4 firmware update.
    2. Would like to see something new in small/lightweight travel tripods with a fluid head.
    3. some new handheld gimbals to replace a steadicam, useful for small DSLR's

2 FZ1000's and an LX100 will cover a lot more 4k holes and angles than this camera for less money and probably do a better job of it, especially in the LX100's case.    But hey, this is a canon and as far as many are concerned it's the only camera out there.   I'm just not seeing much of a point to this camera..   The C300 though, looks like a fantastic camera for it's intended market.    Isn't the C100 going for 2900 right now?   I'd jump on that before this, even without the 4k.
When I first saw it I was thinking it would run around 1k to $1300 max.

I used Slog3, but at 1080 180fps. Maybe the DR is way better at 24p, or 4k?
The conditions were very contrasted. Black/White backgrounds with 1K Arri and KinoFlo fill.
I rented it so I didn't have much time with it but I'd love to shoot again under more 'colorful' conditions. I loved everything about it except the frickin menus, and having to restart it constantly.

johnnymossville reacted to Cinegain in Pictures of two new Canon 750D and 760D 'rebels'
Actually the movie mode on both models sits on the powerswitch by the looks of it.
760D looks quite sensible. The top LCD is a nice entry-level add-on. But if it's just a downsized 70D and not much more, with similar specs... not sure why one should bother. I do hope it has a new sensor, processing and consumer 4K. That's the only way I can see how they can reboot their 550D's success without having to be afraid of hurting their high-end lines. Because beside being APS-C crop, for photography I'm not expecting killer performance, it's probably not that built-to-withstand and for video it will probably have some shortcomings. I wouldn't really care that much for stills performance (fps, ISO12800 performance), etc and never killed a camera, not going out in the rain that much, so consumer level finish is fine enough for me as long as the image and especially video looks great. Perhaps with the Magic Lantern touch... who knows. And maybe one is directed at photographers and the other at hybrid shooting, having their own strengths.
I'm not leaning towards any particular brand... so they should feel free to convince me! Although I'm pretty true to small form factor and the M43 system, so they'll need to really bring it. Knowing Canon... it's probably nothing groundbreaking though. But I'll keep an open mind about it.

It's weird and it almost looks to me "doug gerber" is someone advertising for Ray Romans workshop or just trying to bring it to our attention, Doug posted the exact same question on dvinfo.net which I answered but right after that the entire message was deleted from the board which is very unusual since only someone with a admin status can do that, also there he was a first time poster. It might be a coincidence but Ray has a new workshop about to start and he is advertising for that on dvinfo.
    Maybe I"m just being paranoia...

johnnymossville reacted to JonB in Panasonic GH4 vs Sony A7S compared - who wins the 4K battle on paper?
I think the low light capabilities of the GH4 have been a bit misunderstood by many.  Extreme low light with the A7s is a very cool artistic tool, but in no way is the GH4 unusable in low light.  Just don't try to see in the dark with the GH4 and let shadows be shadows.  To that extent, it is a low light camera if treated well.
Our latest short travel film has bunches of low light shots:  A Postcard from Jamaica

If you can't make something look good with 12 stops, nice highlight rolloff and some lights, you are need to work on your skills. That's the point you really can no longer blame your tools (and the reason I think the 5DRaw will keep me happy for a long, long time).

johnnymossville reacted to Guest in I'm selling my Nikon D5300 (*sob*)
I love shooting stills, but I'm always shooting video instead so I never do. I'm not a photographer. The GH4 is a good enough stills camera for me - in fact I love shooting stills with it. It's so versatile, and stills quality (particularly RAW) is very good. Far, far better than my G6 for example. The Nikon would just sit on my shelf gathering dust, and I needed to sell it to pay for the GH4.

As you say, the GH4 and BMPCC is a superb filmmaking combo. With my fast primes and speed booster low light isn't even really a problem.

I'm literally in love with the GH4. There is just so much camera in that tiny GH3 body it's insane. It's such a pleasure to work with too. And it's amazingly futureproof - 10-bit 422 4K capable! The BMPCC's image isn't going to look silly for a very long time either. I'm so pleased to have two superb, professional video cameras that I know will be with me for a long time. I'm really looking forward to focussing on all the other aspects of filmmaking and not wondering whether or not I should upgrade. I can confidently say I would be happy with these two as my 'A-cameras' for at least another 2-3 years.

Anyway, the D5300 has gone now (as has my G6) and I'm too besotted with the GH4 to care.  I may pick up a GM1, GX7 or LX100 as a B-cam at some point if I find the BMPCC too frustrating for paid multi cam stuff.

I actually have on my desk right now - the FS7. I've not even turned it on yet but this thing is incredible. It's built like a rock and the grip is the best thing about it. Shooting a music video with a RAAAR RAAAR band on FS7 + a GH4 on a drone in a mental asylum with no roof tomorrow.

It's news to me that the C100 Mark II's image competes with the full frame A7S 4K output, or the 10bit 4K GH4 output or the NX1's 4K output oversampled from a 6.5K sensor output.

    "DSLR killer" it isn't.

I've heard good things about that one but for my money I would get the kamerar like andy suggested. The standout feature for me is that it's one arm, so much easier to move about on the rails or take on and off the rig. And it's just as stable.

In my humble experience with GH4 it's better using an higher ISO then underexposing. Grain is really "organic", not harsh! I like it!

I was considering this for event videography work, but the specs on B&H list a 29 minute clip limit, making it useless for my 1-2 hour unattended wide shots.
Can anyone confirm whether this is true? Seems a shame if it is.

Drew Gupta (DrewNet) describes the 7-14 as having "distortion from hell itself!" And that's on the BMPCC   Also, I don't think you can screw an ND on it. Not a video lens really, if you want honesty.

I noticed Jupiter Ascending used Leica lenses. After a little research I found this: http://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2014/03/why-do-we-want-flat-glass/

The Cooke has distortion and less pleasing bokeh (only 5 blades), however it just looks better ("3D"). Testing cameras and lenses against each other is a useful exercise. I've been testing the GH4 against the A7S in studio lighting and the GH4 is looking better, especially in skintones. I had tweaked the A7S to look similar to the 5D3 and thought it looked pretty good until I did the same with the GH4. Under studio lighting, the GH4 produces nicer skintones and a cleaner image (+ 4K!). In December the Atomos Shogun will bring 4K to the A7S, however the GH4 will get 10-bit 422 4K at the same time (vs. 8-bit for the A7S).
