  1. For traveling I just take RX10 II, leave my A7S and GH4 at home lol. After some crazy shooting with primes back in the days I am now a zoom man again.

For that price I rather take A7R II ($2699 brand new on ebay) and 35mm f2.8 or 28mm f2.0 lens, consider none of them are small enough to fit the pocket anyway.

And if I am really keen to have FF P&S with money I rather spend another extra grand and get the real Leica Q instead. At least they wont release new model every year, plus that 3.6million dot EVF is world ahead of others.

  2. Incorrect. The GH4 sensor doesn't have phase detection AF points on it. We know Panasonic fabricated the sensor, but it isn't the same as the sensor in any other Panasonic camera.

The MN34231 in the E-M1 is a variation of the GH4's MN34230 chip, even though on die itching it said MN34230 on the E-M1 sensor, but the rest of the spec should be the same (4K capable, high speed recording)

  3. Why would you go with the EM1? The EM5ii is the more video focused of the two. Also, if you could hold off I'd wait to see if they come out with a new sensor for the EM1ii.

E-M1 seems to have less moire/aliasing than E-M5 II since it uses GH4 sensor, even though bitrate is not high.  The sensor on E-M5 II is the same as E-M5 which is not really for video..

But E-M5 II with flat profile would be easier for color matching/grading though, with E-M1 have that too

  4. Much better than the gh4. Its imo 12 usable stops given that the Blackmagic has 13 (which I use as my personal bench mark).

So in my experience it has the same DR as the c100 and D16. Atleast a stop more than the a7s. And again more than the gh4.

    I have a g7 so I can do a comparing shot.

Laughing my ass off, I have shot with RED/BMCC/BMPCC, A7s definitely have more DR than BM's 13 stop , I have encountered some scene (pretty extreme condition) which BM get blown but still fine on A7s.  I originally thought Sony probably have usable 12stops dr after reading "online test" but after seeing the actual footage me and DOP agreed A7s do have more DR than BM.

  5. Yeah, it's the accessories that are the killer.  $6000 gets your attention as perhaps being attainable, but then its an extra $4000 for a 120gb ssd, a touch screen and a handle.  They are taking the piss!   This is the first time I've ever paid red any real attention. Do you have to use their ssd? or could you just get the 'brain' and provide everything else yourself?

You have to get their SSD, back in Red ONE days if you use non-red cf card you are restricted to 2K and up to 60fps, no 4K instead of 120fps in 2k and 4k.

  6. I own three steadicams.  It takes about a month to get good at it - then it's pretty small tweaking.

costs $2k used.  up to 10 lbs weight.

the gimbal once you switch the lens you have to tweak it?  I don't know - never seen how effective these little guys are but with the steadicam pilot you can put a remote follow focus on it and use cameras like the epic and alexa mini on it when you want to.

With gimbal you can zoom in and zoom out and it still hold position, they are less sensitive in weight distribution compare to steadicam. And for the lens if they are similar weight the motor can tolerant some difference, I can change from UW lens to 50mm prime to 24-70mm lens on the go without tweaking the PID setting, the downside with not perfectly balanced setup is they eat more battery.

  7. you can also buy a steadicam pilot for probably less than these gimbals and it uses physics not electronics to work and takes a lot less tweaking to get right.

    1. it cost $2795 brand new

    2. it take months and years to get it right

    3. still have to tweak it here and there.

    4. big and heavy, inconvenient to go anywhere, especially if travel "light"

    vs gimbal

    1.cost $800 new

2.weight much less as no counter weight needed

3.once set you dont have to tweak again

  8. Yeah the 8-bit 100mbps codec is no match.

More like user error, quite a lot of user were disappointed with slog2 on a7s, the noise is too much compare to other profile unless you +1/+2ev over.

I can get more DR on 4:2:0 XAVC-S than 4:2:2 10bit on bmpcc on a couple occasion, that 14dr really makes difference.

    1. They are a foto company and so they havent enough videodeveloping engeneers. Since 1 year they have some more vidoe developer . result : EM 5 II.

    2. It is a problem of their contract with Panasonic. The Sensor of the EM-1 can do more Video rates ( also 4K) but Olympus ist not permitted to bring

the results. As far as he knows the contract limitation was for 2 years. EM 1 enter the market in September 2013 so in September 2015 Olympus could bring a videoupdate with allowens of Pana.

    i hope they do it

Looks like that Simon guy is right, the contract limitation expires this month so Olympus can do whatever it wants with E-M1 in terms of video capabilities.. though not sure if they gonna bring 4k or leave that for E-M1 II
