1. I'm happy with colour reproduction. The Leica M8 didn't have an ir-cut filter over the sensor either. I've ordered some Leica ir-cut filters for my lenses.
 2.
http://www.vimeo.com/42091083 This is a torture test of the low light abilities of 3 cameras. There are three test scenes in a battered old ex-factory in the east of Berlin. The first consists of a completely pitch black room with glowing pearl lighting. The next one is in the roof is lit using a single iPhone 4S torch with the cameras ramped up to ISO 12,800. The third scene is again a pitch black dark room with the lights of a building outside reflecting in a mirror on the wall. 3.
This interests me far more than the bland, hackneyed hollywood stuff coming out to showcase the latest cameras. Good to see some nice Bridlington landscapes too... cheers for the blog, when you're in the market for camera gear, its good to have a resource that doesn't propogate the hype...
Glad to see we are on the same page. Note to self - I'd happily take 10 of these kind of enlightened readers than 10,000 of the other bozos.

As video taxes a cmos chip in a different way than stills.
Please elaborate.
Faster readout, more heat generated (makes for more noise), demands of video on CMOS design such as a rolling shutter which is fast enough (to avoid crazy jello) rather than a mechanical shutter, in-line A/D converters to allow fast readout of digital data to the image processor.
 5. Congratulations  ;D Hockney is one of the world's greatest living artists, probably THE greatest ever to use a DSLR for video. Most people have very mainstream taste. What I see out there from famous DSLR shooters who are so adored, is in my view extremely cliched and no better than you get on TV. Consumer eye candy for the masses. Nothing new at all. If that is what people aspire to - remaking Lost - then so be it. But it isn't very creative. This is. It just goes to show that not only is good taste rare, but so is an artistic mindset. Thanks for posting.
 6.
about 150 dollars...  the guy was ver nice... he only said "you took something off this camera?" the mk iii hasnt even gotten to Guatemala yet... if you get cameras here its super expensive, the mk ii is about 5,500 dollars...  i get my stuff from the states... but you know what andre if you take it to a canon service center and say i am in a hurry please check whats wrong with this or clean the sensor or something, they will do it... i am shooting a documentary, so basically i told the guy i needed it by yesterday. they cant turn your back on you just because you decided to take off something from the camera  8) they guy was so nice that he took some pictures of my "wrong procedure"... take it to canon it will be allright
This is really good service by Canon. $150 USD to perfectly align the sensor and build it back up. I would have expected that to be a lot more. If anyone can get in touch with Canon service centres near you, do feel free to share your experience / quote prices, etc.
 7.
Bill DePalma removed both OLPFs and had the glass replaced and dust system replicated (via Maxmax.com): https://vimeo.com/40789276 Andrew- you removed only one OLPF and did not add replacement glass (nor re-attached the dust system)? Still curious if the software changes behavior with the dust system connector removed.
This video has been deleted. Anyone know why? And does anyone have a copy? By the way I was forwarded emails by a reader from MaxMax's president Dan. I hope their AA-filter removal service is better than his reasoning behind removing it to improve video quality, because nothing in the email made sense - at least to me. Maybe MaxMax can clarify what service they can offer us video guys who just want a sharper image without the AA-Filter. Moire isn't a problem any more (at least on the 5D Mark III). He was going on about blurring the image! We do need a service to do this op, it was very risky of me to do a DIY job on the camera and I don't recommend it. Find a company to do it instead. Most ones that convert DSLRs to astro-photography cameras (i.e taking out the IR-cut filter) should do it.
 8. Leica are purists. They see a lot of the digital stuff as outside their core market and yes I agree their reputation is utterly critical. (Their rebadged Panasonic compacts are sold purely on the badge). The reason they're not embracing distortion correction in-camera like Panasonic & Olympus do is all about reputation and purist optical design. With the digital stuff not their core business I think they probably see cinema cameras the same way. One would be great for the lens sales though, and there are Leica cine lenses http://leicarumors.com/2011/08/05/leica-summilux-c-cinema-lenses-now-shipping.aspx/ So never say never. Leica's screen resolution and late adoption of live view on the M series speaks volumes about how the core business of Leica is to make a film camera with a memory card instead of film, all the other frilly bits are not a priority. Will video be seen by management as a frilly bit or a serious tool?
 9.
In an interview with the British press in Berlin this week, Leica head of the supervisory board Dr Andreas Kaufmann revealed that they have been working on implementing video on their digital rangerfinder line or possibly new products. 10. Watched it, cheers FilmMan. Though there's no download it streams in full 1080p. Highlight handling looks much improved. The lens they used has pretty bad purple fringing though.
 11.
yeah... i got my IR filter a little dirty in the procedure, so i took it to canon here in Guatemala, the autofocus wasnt working so the technician got everything back in to place, cleaned the sensor, cleaned the contacts... autofocus is working, focus is in the right place... only the auto cleaning problem, so i turned it off ive been working only with the 24 - 105 L f4 and the 70 - 200 L f4 ... focus in 24mm is perfect... have many people done this? i will be posting some footage soon... resolution does improve... i still dont know why people are saying it doesnt...
Interesting that you got Canon to get it all back into place, etc. What did they charge?
 12.
:D loving the results... nothing to loose... only the will of not doing it! bodies come and go, machines should serve men we cant have them in altar
Let us know how it goes / went and any tips you can pass on, we'll be eternally grateful for. After the initial op mine is staying shut for the time being, although I feel my focus is a bit off with the Samyang 24mm... I'll have to tune it up again sooner or later.
 13.
On Timelapse / Vimeo I didn't really think about this before. Reflecting it...I completely agree. further down: "Not for him the stealth factor when approaching a corporation, rather all guns blazing!" I don't understand the grammar of this sentence. "Jeff did use a GH2 on his documentary ...but is still put off it somewhat for documentary because of rolling shutter jello and a lack of mic socket." Wait a second. I can clearly see the Mic socket on my GH1 and GH2s. But I guess he was refering more to phantom powered XLR sockets. Andrew: Don't overdo it with repeating your critique on the 5DmkIII and your praise of the GH2 over and over again. You don't have to build that point into each and every blog posting.
Indeed, the natural sound aspect is almost part of the image in the way it influences the mood of any music you put over the top of it. Something I've neglected sometimes as well. Sound is double the work, though! A real skill. Mic socket should be headphone socket, a typo. Corrected it, cheers.
 14.
Hey man... did the same modification to my mk III what settings did you use on your picture profile... i am using technicolor... waht do you reccomend... still had sharpness +1 even without the filter but the image looks a bit funky... a bit too electric
You're brave. Salut! I have sharpness at zero now. You don't need to boost it, especially not in-cam.
 15.
A few days ago I spoke to Jeff Gibbs, a lifelong friend of Michael Moore, a composer, a producer and a filmmaker in his own right. Most significantly of all, Jeff is also an EOSHD reader!! So last week we had a long transatlantic chat on the phone about filmmaking, DSLRs, 4K and Jeff’s new film. Currently in the edit suite, this is a wry but thoughtful documentary called Planet of The Humans about “what happens when six, no make that seven, billion clever apes overrun an entire planet.” The feature, shot partly on the GH2 and 5D Mark II, takes a cynical view of the green energy industry, bio-fuel and questions what the future is going to look like after oil runs out. Jeff had some great insights into the world of cinema, DSLRs and The Hobbit… Read full article
16.
Andrew you regularly inspire me.  I'm a lifetime Audio guy that has gotten into video over the last 4 years and i'm having a blast.  More importantly you keep expanding my horizons with articles like this.  I want to explore and experiment and i'm not in fear of creating a different aesthetic from the norm.  I'm going to experiment even more now after reading this. It's funny cuz in the audio realm i've always been an anti establishment guy.  I'll use any piece of gear for what it can give me.  I don't care about the purest view on expensive gear and so forth.  That's just too limiting.  I hope I can do the same thing in video.
Great to hear. Actually there are a lot of parallels with audio and putting the life into that too. By the way it doesn't have to be an old lens... Some of the new stuff is interesting as well like the way the Nokton 25mm F0.95 looks wide open on the GH2.
 17.
What about PCs with ATI graphics cards?
As long as the card supports OpenCL, and your drivers do, should be fine.
 18.
One of the biggest changes to Premiere Pro in the new version is a renderless timeline which supports OpenCL capable graphics cards. Previously Adobe only supported NVidia’s CUDA standard for GPU acceleration. Mac users with ATI cards missed out on the huge performance gains from a GPU accelerated video editing package. Previously even MacBook Pro users with high end (for the time) CUDA capable NVidia graphics found themselves without quite enough video RAM and in need of a hack to get it to work. That has all changed with CS6. Read full article
19.
panavision slow kill from unsustainable debt levels and bulky old film cameras. value only in optics in the store rooms. nasa slow kill ex space agency that today have too rely on the russians to get into space. nearly as bad as the brits with aircraft carriers but axed the plane programme. so aircraft carriers with no aircraft and a space agency that relies on the old enemy too get into space. like all nasa projects the technology will be given underhand to china or a group of developers will leave and set up a company. nasa have relied mainly on kodak, phillips and dalsa over the years i cannot believe the funding for this has come from nasa, who are dieing from obama's cuts. unless it is connected with a earth based kill technology which seems to be america's biggest growth area. my guess from someone that has purchased a lot of old nasa optics. the investment in sensor is more too do with drone surveillance systems a rapid expansion of which is going on for use in the american homeland. with all the corruption in the uk,usa and france sometimes the best technology does not get the investment back handers prevail. dalsa are a superb sensor company who have lost out in the last few years not to superior competitor product but simply not paying off the proper people.
Enjoyed reading this, cheers Tony. Dalsa are more CCD specialists and the trend is for CMOS tech. But I do agree a lot of corruption goes on disguised as business. The world has not changed as far as underhand dealings go - just got better at branding it.
 20.
What exactly is the point? a 25mm F0.95 on micro four thirds will produce the equivalent field of view and depth of field as a 50mm F1.8 on a 5d.  I don't really see the logic in paying a 1000+ dollars on a lens that will give the same look as the cheapest lens in available on 35mm full format.
The point should really be - Why would you want to use a boring 50mm F1.8 on a soft-o-vision 5D when the GH2 gives you more resolution with a lens that is much brighter in low light, with more manageable focus and has more interesting bokeh?
 21.
Putting the life into an image is an art. It isn’t always about Canon L glass. Here I’ll explain exactly why this is and how to get the most from the more ‘unusual’ lenses on eBay. 22.
One of my favourite lenses on the GH2 (if not the favourite) and the one that gets the most use is the Voigtlander Nokton 25mm F0.95. It offers unrivalled shallow DOF on the GH2′s 1.86x crop sensor and superb low light performance. However it is a photographic lens not really designed for cinematographers. Now SLR Magic are producing a cine lens rival for the same price – with minimal breathing, 10 blade aperture for smooth bokeh when stopped down and clickless aperture ring.
