It marks the first time video has been implemented on a Leica M, with a brand new full frame 35mm CMOS sensor developed in Europe by CMOSIS. EOSHD went along to interview Product Manager for the M-System Jesko Von Oeynhausen to find out what it means for filmmakers. Please note that the camera is at the moment a pre-production camera (firmware version 0.0.20.1) with an expected list price of €6200.

Test footage from the pre-release Panasonic GH3 at Photokina
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
From this grab, it seems it is just your monitor that is clipping. Non-calibrated Apple screens are really bad, they are too contrasty, a crush the black by a big margin. Not speaking of being glossy glass. On my calibrated Nec LCD2490WUXi, the left image is correct. No black crushed and - as there is any - no highlight clipped. You should really look to calibrate your screen, or get a better one.
The monitor calibration did help the blacks but now other aspects of my display are a little crazy and it is too bright. The skin tones on the juggler's face issue - one is clearly awful and the other much better - any idea what causes that? -

For reference this is the levels problem I am still having with the GH2 after all these years, and now GH3. Why does my Mac not recognise that GH2 footage should be 16-235 not 0-255? Quicktime treats it as 0-255 as well, crushed blacks and blown highlights. Test footage from the pre-release Panasonic GH3 at Photokina
Well. Andrew. I made some screen grabs. I wish you'd clarify the big variances in the Juggler's skin tones. Was that due to different angles/lighting or did you grade clips differently?
Interestingly, the yellow skin tones are from AVCHD mode I think, and the better skin tones are ALL-I. 90% sure I have that right, will have to check and confirm later, it might be the other way round. -
What lens was used for this footage?
Lumix 12-35mm F2.8 X. Very very sharp lens. -
This week I was loaned a GH3 body for a short time at Photokna by Panasonic. This test footage was shot in 1080/25p ALL-I mode at 72Mbit, with two slow mo-sequences of Pocahontas and the juggler shot in AVCHD 1080/50p at 50Mbit. I also had a go at grading the GH3 footage with Peter Patten of Apple.

Moire and aliasing is certainly there on the D600 as much as the D800. Seems similar looking at my footage.

Exclusive - Canon confirm 1D C 4K DSLR is same hardware as the 1D X
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Business is business I suppose. But I think it could backfire. If you look at how the Hasselblad Lunar went down at Photokina, a NEX 7 with fancy trimmings is not worth 5k. The 1D C actually IS worth the money. But what a shame it is not even better, with some more customisation and spec creep it would mean a better product for us and less margin for Canon. Canon chose margin. No peaking, no 25p, etc, etc. They have done the same thing with the Canon C300 / C100 too. Notice that the hardware could be identical there too. And it is just the firmware that has changed to cripple the codec on the C100. By the way, HDMI on that is 4-2-2 and uncompressed so if you want a C300 for less money you know what to do. -
I'm no hardware engineer, but what's to stop the ML guys from downloading the firmware from the 1DC, making a few tweaks, and loading it onto the 1DX? Missing a headphone jack still, so kind of worthless as a documentary or run and gun camera, but for narrative or studio work it would be fine.
It is likely very encrypted and protected by other methods too. -

There might be a different AA filter design on the 1D C but other than that, same camera hardware, just tweaks and firmware added. -
So that means...? I guess it means he wants to prioritize quality over functionality, ie. no multi-aspect sensor? Great interview. Cool to talk to someone who doesn't speak your language but is clearly a very brainy person.
Yes that is correct. Image quality was priority over multi-aspect. He was incredibly intelligent, his notepad left me almost speechless at the end.

I also had a improtum talk to a Canon Europe product manager who was very open and honest about Canon's approach with this camera, but what he said rather shocked me.

I have a LOT more of Pocahontas thanks to SLR Magic's new prototype F0.95 lens ;)

A mechanical designer on the Panasonic L1 back in the Four Thirds days, that camera is now fondly rememberd for a beautiful optical viewfinder, Leica M style build and cutting edge design. Inoue also worked at Minolta before joining Team Lumix. I caught up with Inoue yesterday at Photokina to ask him about the design and technical workings of the new Panasonic GH3 at Photokina in Germany.

Man... I thought he'd shot it with an Alexa. Was stunned when he said GH2. Wasn't even hacked. The 720/60p mode on that camera is probably the best there is. But also all credit to him, his shot selection and choice of lenses was extremely good.

It is definitely not soft. But the aliasing is a bit D800-like and a worry.
Wondering if Telecrop mode has been improved noise-wise and if accessable when using hdmi out. Thanks for all your hard work.
Good points! Will test this tomorrow.

HDMI is uncompressed 4-2-0 I didn't have a Ninja with me to test, the Ninja was busy beating up Philip. Nor did I have my Zacuto EVF to hand but this is pretty solid info - Slashcam guys know their stuff http://www.43rumors.com/gh3-info-no-multiaspect-sensor-uncompressed-hdmi-out-with-420/
Was there a punch up with Bloom
Yep. I won.

Clone me and I'll consider it. As far as the filming of reviews go. Philip is very good at that, his reviews are almost an event in themselves. But I prefer to write, I find often coming across info on the web and not having the time to absorb a video. It is quicker to read a blog post.

I was then let loose with the camera to shoot some test footage in 1080/25p ALL-I and 50Mbit 1080/50p mode. This camera was running firmware version v0.4 and so by no means final yet. What I found impressed me.
I suspect that Nikon & Canon just got the same answers from the extensive marketing research & focus groups that these vast corporations use to find out what consumers really want.
Or hire a Steve Jobs. Much better. -

The official unveiling answers some of the mysteries too.
