1.
So contarary to your previous report, Andrew, were you claim there is zero reasons to get the 650D because Canon you claimed made no improvement. Do you think you have to back track on your earlier statements? We have yet to see how well the 650D can grade and if it is anything as good as 5DIII in sharpening. Why did Canon not mention clean HDMI? Maybe they don't consider it such a big deal given the small difference it made to colour space while Nikon trumped about it and some people were clearly duped.
There's still zero reasons to get one. The HDMI output is as shit as the camera judging by early reports. Wake me up when it gets even close to the GH2's image and I'll consider it. Zacuto's shot in the Revenge episode on the 7D would look as bad either via HDMI or via the internal codec. I'm yet to see an HDMI output on a DSLR that gives you a significant boost in image quality, or sorts out moire, or gives you more resolution, or better dynamic range, or less aliasing. It certainly won't sharpen in post as well as the 5D Mark III, because the moire and aliasing artefacts would be brought out even more. Try sharpening your 600D footage, same thing.
  2. It is worth keeping an eye out on Johnnie's progress. He's a good guy. As for the 650D , the codec is not the weak point. I think the HDMI is an interlaced signal and it won't solve the moire or resolution issues - very unlikely to anyway.

Welcome ndblak and thanks a lot! 8)
  4.
Sure needs a lot of improvements for a camera that supposedly better than the 5D  :P
My list for the 5D is much longer.  ;D
  5. They did a great job on the re-design. I'll be keeping a close eye on it.
  6. The last one I saw of these went for around $150 on eBay. You may get much more for it if you prove its worth with some good quality samples from the lens in ETC mode. The problem with F1.0 in ETC mode is that you still get far better low light performance (less noise) and a shallower DOF in normal video mode with a modern F2.8 zoom.
  7.
Above: myself shooting with an anamorphic LOMO on the GH2 I’ve already fired off my suggestions for the GH3 to one of my most helpful friends in the industry. Thanks a great deal. Now you can see the suggestions to in this open letter to Panasonic. I’ve listed the requests in order of priority. Yes I’d really like to see that Canon G1X style built in ND filter. Read full article
8.
This is quite inspiring. The famed director of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance has shot his latest film on the iPhone 4. 9. Contax Zeiss 28mm F2.0 you mean? That is a superb lens, and pricey. The 28mm F2.8 is a good lens on full frame, but on a crop sensor like the GH2 you're better off with a 35mm F2. F2.8 isn't bright enough.
  10. The F3 still has a codec advantage over the FS700, which is just a FS100 with slow mo and less low light prowess. Blackmagic will probably stuff them all for resolution. It is like an Alexa with a smaller sensor and far less low light ability. The problem I have with the 5D Mark III's high ISO performance is not the amount of noise, it is the way the noise looks so ugly and the lack of detail.
  11. I appreciate you're annoyed, but everyone who has seen this thread has seen episode 1 by now and made their judgement calls blind. It doesn't make any difference to me what people reveal from now on. iPhone and 7D obvious from the start, and now is the Alexa. Waiting a month for the results is ridiculous. It will be all over the web by then. This guy has been pretty creative in spotting the clues. After seeing episode 1, I immediately wanted to know the results. The guys at the official screenings got them within 15 minutes. Nothing wrong with that. So what is wrong with his posts about the GH2 colourist and Alexa? Fair play, and well spotted. Now everyone who cares has had a chance to watch episode 1 (if they don't by then, and they're looking for the results, obviously they are not that interested in the first place) the results are fair game. Zacuto made a mistake having this 1 month gap. I understand the logic behind it - the amount of investment which has gone into this is too large for them to just release it all at once, they want to sustain the interest over a longer period of time - but 3 months? Bit silly really.
  12.
Nobody else thinks they all look stupid for under exposing the room?
Yes it is a bit silly to have that much light outside a huge window and such a dark room. Guess they wanted more of a dynamic range test rather than absolute realism. The highlights in the window are very revealing so I actually prefer it to be shot the way it is.
  13.

richg .. grow up. If you like to do something useful with your time, why are you on this forum? I gave reasons why GH2 is I. You didn't
I'm not the loser sitting in front of a monitor all day freeze framing the shootout like its some type of challenge.  What are you gaining from all this nonsense?    You need to grow up.  I'm on here for entertainment while I wait for an export to finish on the other computer.  You are here in between your silly little quest, eating and looking at naked ladies online..  Stop spamming the thread with your rubbishy unsubstantiated trainspotting.
Richg101 - don't like the hostility. Quit it. Good spot with the Alexa evil_thought2. All good fun.
  14. Not sure about that - there's nothing in the colour correction shot to say it is GH2 footage, they could have cut any archive footage to it. But nice spot!
  15.
Canon have introduced a kind of augmented reality to their factories, when a designer is evaluating a physical prototype, a more detailed CGI image reacts to his movements and gives a live CAD video feed through special glasses. 16. Looking again, I think B is the GH2. The Epic or C300 is C because the highlights are yellow and that is a complaint I've heard about those cameras before. (It means the channels clip at different times, so if your green channel clips before your red and blue you will get a purple tint in the highlights, which quite a few cameras had here).
  17.
Andrew? Sorry to ask just really can't make a decision, would like some input from someone who truly knows the budget market inside out.
Don't wait to buy a camera. GH2 is a no-brainer right now. The GH3 will cost you more and kill the quality of your shooting before it arrives because you won't have a camera at all, or a lesser quality one. I'd go for the GH2 and if the GH3 turns out to be a big step forward you can sell and pay the difference. Just be prepared to invest in some nice glass in the mean time, Canon FD a good place to start - the 35mm F2, 50mm F1.4 and 85mm F1.8 are superb looking on the GH2 and cheaper than anything from Panasonic.
  18. There's such a small amount of difference between them. Just try mine and Driftwood's and choose the one you like best from both an image quality and practical (recording time) perspective, then stick with it  8)
  19. Interest is as high as ever but the supplies of good anamorphic lenses seem to be drying up on eBay, since around 6 months ago in fact. What is needed is for Isco to reboot their factory.
  20.
title should be : Cinema5D review of Canon 650D confirms no fix for moire, aliasing and resolution
I wasn't expecting resolution to be fixed, so it isn't even news! ???
  21.
Andrew, i usually set 5d's gamma to 1.8, 4:4:4 full range, and BT 709 for Gh2 footage. I'm sure this has been answered before somewhere, but i found this through trial and error and would trust your opinion more than my troubleshooting.  It looks flat as a board.  But i'm not sure that's just gamma.
I don't take this approach to gamma on the 5D. I find the transcode itself (full range) on AVCHD is enough and for the 5D I just edit the native files.
  22. I understand that but please don't, for the sake of those not wanting to stumble into the results and for those happy to wait. I am sure if you do a forum search on other sites it will come up with the info.
  23.
Above: one of my favourite scenes from the episode, click it to enlarge to 1080p, the colour on this shot is ‘early Technicolor’ and ‘Hitchcockian’. But I am not 100% sure which camera was used to shoot it (although I have a gut feeling!) – and that tells you a lot about how evenly matched cameras like the FS100 and GH2 are with much more expensive offerings (if viewed at 1080p) If you haven’t already I advise you to watch the episode before reading this and draw your own conclusions first. If you have seen the full screening please do not reveal the results on the comments forum. Watch episode 1 here! The Zacuto Shootout is like a torch light in the dark for many aspiring, young filmmakers and it is useful – not to mention fascinating and enjoyable – to see these incredible tools fight for the best image. Now the Revenge series has added people into the mix it is even more interesting and educational. 24. H, F, C and B looked the best to me. Most of the others had issues with the actors being in too much shadow, and a colour temperature which was set too cool. Full review of the first episode soon.
