Among all the firmware requests by YouTubers and RED shooters, this one was almost out of the radar. Which tells me is an indirect response to whining about raw file sizes. Which means an internal lower bitrate R3D NE became even less likely.

Not in video though: 13mm, 24mm, 48mm, 100mm, 200mm and I suppose macro too? As far as reported here, it seems the Detail app can record multicam, but... ...from any of those different cameras, i.e., distinct focal lengths, we wish??! How many can it record simultaneously? Only two of them, just the front and rear, I guess? Here's an informative overview: The other point is: Is the external SSD usable for direct recording, or just for backup with Detail app? And what about editing also allowed by this app?

Are there any good 7” monitors besides the Atomos Shinobi 7 that support Nikon’s N-log? I know SmallHDs don’t but not sure about Portkeys BM7 or others. Thanks!

A weight tolerance of ±3% for drones classified as C0 is specified in the European standard prEN 4709-001:2021, developed by ASD-STAN. This standard defines the technical requirements and verification methods for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) intended for operation in the open category within the European Union, in accordance with Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945. Compliance with this standard ensures conformity with the safety and operational rules established under the EU UAS regulatory framework. Therefore, the operation of the DJI Mini 5 Pro is compliant across EU countries. The ±3% tolerance also permits the use of a ND filter (~1,12 g). And even an anamorphic adapter, who knows? ; ) Freewell for previous models is ~ 3 g... So, all is fine for DJI Mini 5 Pro operators within the EU. To complete the picture, more details can be obtained from these sources: https://dronexl.co/2025/09/23/easa-dji-mini-5-pro-c0-status-weight https://www.slashcam.com/news/single/DJI-Mini-5-Pro-weighs-over-250g---but-still-remain-19559.html Also covering the situation in other regions, namely the main Western countries: https://www.techradar.com/cameras/drones/dji-mini-5-pro-drone-laws Specifically UK: https://www.caa.co.uk/drones/getting-started-with-drones-and-model-aircraft/drone-code/drone-code-overview/

I've been using a "Portkenstein" - a mix of Portkeys LEYE II and Zacuto eyepiece - for some time. It's the best cheap solution but requires 3d printing the adapter and manually assembling the whole thing. Not a big deal, but requires some patience and some time. It's also a bit heavy once you add a Canon LP battery, not ideal for a lightweight rig on long days of solo filming - I make documentaries and tv reportages. So I bought this new viewfinder (hdmi+ usb version) on Alixpress for 200€ after taxes and duties and it looks fairly good for now. On my Lumix s5IIx (50hz) the HDMI power is not enough so I put a super lightweight, lipstick shaped power bank on my rig to give it usb power. After some time I can unplug the USB cable and the viewfinder keeps working, strange but true. If I turn the camera on and off again, I need to plug in the Usb cable again. I think I will just keep it connected all the time. It's super small and light, the image is fair if you don't care about perfect color accuracy. The image is also a little too big so you have to slightly adjust the eye position to see it all. I will do some real world test this week but so far it looks like a decent compromise for lightweight work. One good upgrade, as another forum member suggested, would be to replace the bulky HDMI cable with a female adapter glued to the viewfinder body.

Do you know if anyone has posted raw files to download? I would like to get an idea between the C50 and the ZR.

sounds to me like you’re doing a shoot that’s meant to be done by multiple crew members as a 1 man band. i already think you’re setting yourself up to fail. Depending on what you’re invoicing and whatever budget you’re going with, you might even skew expectations further for clients and other workers in the field.

Nothing against the man (never had, and my previous posts speak for themselves, so I cannot be under any suspicion — quite the contrary : P). But Stephen, for someone who claims to be just a simple tech reviewer making a living out of it, while simultaneously having nothing to do with filmmaking, and then someone else sees Philip Bloom promoting GU LUTs (!) — as with the most recent DJI bird (Mini 5 Pro)... well, that really makes me laugh! : ) And yet, to still be frank, never has a PB video looked so bad :- )

If you gain something in SN ratio, sure you lose something in details. Its almost impossible to extract "true" 4k bayer from 6k bayer.

On Gerald Undone example, it looked not that good. But I think it is at pixel level!!!

With F-mount lenses the AF won't be great during video but it should be OK for stills for the most part. I don't think focus pulling by hand with autofocus stills lenses (F-mount) is going to be easy. Practice with the same kind of subjects helps. For video AF, native lenses do best. Most Z mount Nikkors also can be programmed for linear manual focusing. Raw video takes up a lot of storage very quickly.

The extended oversampling ON/OFF (in the Z8/9) only affects 4K h.265 and Prores 422 HQ video at 50 and 60 fps and it should not affect raw video formats.

ZR 4k raw is not line skipped. Its read out speed is the same as 6k raw. So it uses the whole pixels, but some kind of digital downconversion happens that has SN ratio of 3k image but resolution of 4k image, with a downside of some high frequency aliasing.

I bought all the impact transitions about 10 years ago, never bothered with the subscription based gpu ones they were ridiculously expensive and getting cheesier with each passing year. I now use 3 or 4 of them regularly, but most of them look super dated now imho.

Which is out of my jobbing comfort zone. I’ve done it before but 10+ years ago and honestly kinda fluked it: like manually focus pulling on people zooming down slides. They want stills and video. There’s a bunch of things I need to test but thought I’d canvas opinion I have Nikon ed 300mm f2.8 and vrii 70-200 f2.8. Using the zoom previously I found the autofocus a bit shit - especially with subject approaching camera, and that was with stills. I’m assuming this is because it’s not native z mount (I have ftz1). Do I have a hope in hell of either of these handling video af with fast moving subjects? Any advice on modes would be appreciated. Nraw: Just seen premiere beta supports nraw. I’m thinking of shooting raw and extracting stills from the 8k files. Is this a terrible idea? I have done this with 8k h265 but the stills are kinda nasty. (I’ll shoot high shutter speed/small shutter angle). I have no idea of raw workflow either. was planning on handing out insta 360 to people too to get some action and pov stuff but this footage looks super video-y. Are there any action cams that might cut better with z8?

Pretty good summary. After shooting NRaw almost a year now with Z6iii I can relate to almost all of that. According to Gerald and Cinematools Z6iii FX 4k NRaw is line skipped but DX is pixel to pixel, which is the reason why in Cinematools’ Z8 vs Z6iii comparison the 4k120p with Z6iii looks better. The only extra step with NRaw IMHO is to use Resolve to trim the NRaw files and export important parts via Resolve’s Media management. If you do the Red Raw hack after export, Resolve won’t accept the renamed files. If you do the hack first, Resolve won’t export the trimmed R3D files. Have not tried Red CineX pro though. Hopefully it or some other method works with the Zr’s R3D NE Raw files.
