Myth busting time! Yes the GH2 really can do clean, detailed ISO 12,800 in low light, and it is the best current DSLR for low light shooting, with an organic fine grain noise pattern like the Canon C300. How? It all depends on picture profiles, as EOSHD shows in this video tutorial.

Canon C300

Whilst I still prefer the small size and ‘tourist’ stealth factor of DSLRs for the kind of shooting I do, I can recognise why a great many want a Canon C300. The handling, EF mount, image quality and low light performance – as well as built in ND, audio monitoring and build quality are worth the money to many professionals.

But actually there are some myths flying around about the C300 and the competition is far stronger sub $10,000, even sub $6,000 than people realise.

ISO 12,800 tips

1080p frame at ISO 12,800 from the GH2 – click to enlarge

The GH2 is the best low light DSLR. It is a myth it cannot compete with the FS100 or Canon C300. I am currently experimenting a lot with my GH2 and Nikon J1. I’ve seen some new opportunities with these… With the GH2 I am refunding my techniques for getting cinematic extreme low light at ISO 12,800 and F0.95. Due to the way CMOS sensors behave you are actually able to get a very film like ISO 800 grain over well exposed areas of an image and such is the F0.95 aperture on the Voigtlander Nokton and the high ISO, it is very easy to get an exposure in the dimmest of light. The noise is hideous in the lows and red / blue chroma channels, but you crush that noise out with a high contrast black and white picture profile and it solves the issue.

Vitaliy Kiselev revealed his latest version 3.63 GH2 hack yesterday. In it is a innocuous patch that removes the ISO limit (3200) in video mode allowing us to go all the way to ISO 12,800. Now at first I didn’t think much to this, since the image would be unusable at ISO 12,800 right?

Well it turns out I was wrong.

“Seeing in the dark is an understatement, it is like having Infra Red!” was overheard on Vitaliy’s forum so I went out in a hurry to test it and recorded the footage above at ISO 12,800. What I found amazed me. The amount of detail still present in the image is just astounding. No noise reduction is applied to the footage, and it is turned off in-camera. Not only that but noise has a very fine film-like grain because of the accompanying high bitrate hack. The look of the noise is similar to the Nikon D3S’s video mode at high ISOs but with far more resolution. It doesn’t look like digital noise, it is more like 8mm film at ISO 800.
