$60 Pentax that’s actually a $800 Zeiss by designer of Stanley Kubrick’s NASA glass

The Contax Zeiss Distagon ‘Hollywood’ 28mm F2.0 is a classic fast wide for full frame and is incredible on Super 35mm as well. Wide open it’s one of the sharpest F2.0 wide angle lenses available and it has very little distortion.

The Contax Zeiss version fetches $800 on eBay but there’s a $60 wolf in sheep’s clothing called the Pentax PK 28mm F2.0 which has a fascinating story behind it.

Zeiss CP.2 without the price tag? A look at cinema modified Zeiss ZE lenses

Cinematics Zeiss ZE Compact Prime CT.2

Spot the difference! Those crafty Chinese are at it again!

See the lenses on eBay here

Cinematics have started offering ‘film lenses’ which are Zeiss Compact Prime copies – cinema modified Zeiss ZE (Canon mount) full frame lenses at up to one quarter of the price of a real Compact Prime. Optically they remain the same as standard ZE but as you can see from the image above a CP.2 style housing is added (left) to create a “CT.2”.

This includes gearing for a follow focus, T-stop marks instead of F-stop, cinema standard front thread size as well as a stepless aperture ring.

In part 1 I will cover recommended adapters and small walk-around street photography lenses which don’t compromise the compact size of the NEX 5N as a b-roll cam and digital rangefinder. There’s only one Sony pancake at the moment and it’s not very good so these are the answer.

In part 2 I will cover the larger standard SLR primes.
